Indeed, the orange is sometimes thought of by the casual Observer as being indigenous, so eminently suitable have the soil and climate proved to be. When properly cared for and fertilized some Of the native orange trees produce fruits unexcelled in point Of flavor and juiciness, bearing little resemblance to the very indifferent specimens Often found in the markets, which have been picked green, dumped into casks without curing, and sent into the market. These facts are in striking contrast with the statistics, showing that between and worth Of citrus fruits were imported into Honolulu alone in the year ended January 27, 1905. Considerable quantities have also arrived at the ports Of Hilo and Mahukona direct from San Francisco. These circumstances have seemed to make it desirable to give a statement Of common practices in citrus culture, with special reference to their application to Hawaiian conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Culture in Hawaii Many growers have successfully ripened citrus fruit with out infestation by bagging it. In a study of the best methods Of protecting the fruit, the station used medium-weight brown paper bags, and medium-weight cellophane bags to cover grape fruit, oranges, mandarins, and limes. Four-pound bags were used for grapefruit, three-pound bags for oranges, and two pound bags for mandarins and for limes. The bags were put on when the fruit was still green and nearly full grown. The bag was placed about the fruit and tied tightly enough to prevent the entry of water in case of rain; A workman can place 50 to 150 bags per hour, depending on the convenience of reaching the fruit. No foliage Should be bagged with the fruit. Although much rain fell during November and December, 1931, most of the bags were in good condition for from 30 to 50 days, when the fruit was picked. When the fruit ripened - those in the cello phane bags had deeper yellow coloring and possibly better flavor than the fruits in the paper bags. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Fruits of Hawaii: Their Composition, Nutritive Value and Use The diet of many people in Hawaii is unsatisfactory and should be improved by the addition of fruits, vegetables and milk. With the opportunity of purchasing fruits at low cost and the possibility of rais ing them in home gardens, greater use should be made of local fruits by all economic classes in Hawaii. Analyses of local fruits show them to be similar in composition to the same varieties of fruits grown elsewhere. The food value of some fruits is greater than that of others but attention should be called to the high nutritive value of some of our most important, widely grown and generally available fruits - namely, the avocado, the banana, the papaya, the pineapple and the guava. It is hoped that this bulletin may stimulate the greater use of these excellent fruits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ornamental Trees of Hawaii The nomenclature has been kept strictly in accordance with the laws laid down by the last Botanical Congress held at Vienna in 1905 and not according to horticultural dealers or gardeners, who simply apply a familiar name to a plant for the sole purpose of selling it more easily. 'this accounts for the many species of Kentia, while in reality none of the palms on the market as such have anything whatsoever in common with species of that rare genus. Nomenclature of such type belongs to commercial botany. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beneath Hawaiian Palms and Stars It the purpose of my stay became known at all it was to a few of: my personal friends only, who pitied me, but kept their own counsel. Besides, none would have cared whether I wrote up on politics or polypi; for to tell the truth, the people of Hawaii are tired of writers. I am glad to be able to say this after all the reports about the government Officials, and the missionary families, which are accused of enter taining authors of intended books, in order to state one side of the question to them. The effort to put me in touch with island matters, has come from those inclined to Restoration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paradise of the Pacific: Sketches of Hawaiian Scenery and Life I should like to tell you how I got into bed beneath the mosquito curtain, an immense bridal-veil sort of thing which effectually screens you, if (and there is much virtue in an if') you can get in without admitting the blood suckers. Unhappily, mosquitoes are like Sunday School children, very skilful at getting in to treats without a ticket, so in the darksomeness of the night, when the light is out and you are in, you may often hear the shrill blare which proclaims your enemy watchful at your pillow, and then - get him out if you can! Oh, sleep! Nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep, ' in such dire case we may woo thee well and yet in vain. But there is always some drawback everywhere, and after all, mosquitoes, I am told, rarely trouble you for more than a month, after which you become in their eyes a squeezed lemon, or a well drawn dry.
