Book Synopsis Florida's Citrus Canker Epidemic by : David B. Lord
Download or read book Florida's Citrus Canker Epidemic written by David B. Lord and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florida declared war on citrus canker, a bacterial disease, and spent 1.3 billion dollars and destroyed 16.5 million trees, between 1995 to 2006. In the end, the disease won. It is still present in Florida. This is the only book that presents the full story of the epidemic and the failed attempt to eradicate the disease from Florida. The book describes the prior attempts at eradication, the opposition to the program and legal issues. Finally, the epidemiology research leading to the implementation of a highly aggressive program (1900-ft policy) where every citrus tree within 1900-ft of an infected tree, is thoroughly reviewed. It is determined that the Florida Department of Agriculture mislead the residents of Florida into believing that the program was based on a field study in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was not true and the true origins of the 1900-ft policy are revealed in this book. The "Pieces of the Puzzle" come together at the end of the book, as the new history of the epidemic and the eradication program emerges, based on the biological nature of the disease.
Download or read book The Genus Citrus written by Manuel Talon and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genus Citrus presents the enormous amount of new knowledge that has been generated in recent years on nearly all topics related to citrus. Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles and understanding of citrus biology and behavior, the book provides a comprehensive view from Citrus evolution to current market importance. Reporting on new insights supported by the elucidation of the citrus genome sequence, it presents groundbreaking theories and fills in previous knowledge gaps. Because citrus is among the most difficult plants to improve through traditional breeding, citrus researchers, institutions and industries must quickly learn to adapt to new developments, knowledge and technologies to address the biological constraints of a unique fruit-tree such as citrus. Despite the challenges of working with citrus, tremendous progress has been made, mostly through advances in molecular biology and genomics. This book is valuable for all those involved with researching and advancing, producing, processing, and delivering citrus products. Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies

Book Synopsis Microbial Forensics by : Bruce Budowle
Download or read book Microbial Forensics written by Bruce Budowle and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Forensics is a rapidly evolving scientific discipline. In the last decade, and particularly due to the anthrax letter attacks in the United States, microbial forensics has become more formalized and has played an increasingly greater role in crime investigations. This has brought renewed interest, development and application of new technologies, and new rules of forensic and policy engagement. It has many applications ranging from biodefense, criminal investigations, providing intelligence information, making society more secure, and helping protect precious resources, particularly human life. A combination of diverse areas is investigated, including the major disciplines of biology, microbiology, medicine, chemistry, physics, statistics, population genetics, and computer science. Microbial Forensics, Second Edition is fully revised and updated and serves as a complete reference of the discipline. It describes the advances, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead, and will be integral in applying science to help solve future biocrimes. A collection of microbiology, virology, toxicology and mycology as it relates to forensics, in one reference New and expanded content to include statistical analysis of forensic data and legal admissibility and the standards of evidence, to name a few Includes research information and application of that research to crime scene analysis, which will allow practitioners to understand and apply the knowledge to their practice with ease

Book Synopsis Strategic Planning for the Florida Citrus Industry by : National Research Council
Download or read book Strategic Planning for the Florida Citrus Industry written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citrus greening, a disease that reduces yield, compromises the flavor, color, and size of citrus fruit and eventually kills the citrus tree, is now present in all 34 Floridian citrus-producing counties. Caused by an insect-spread bacterial infection, the disease reduced citrus production in 2008 by several percent and continues to spread, threatening the existence of Florida's $9.3 billion citrus industry. A successful citrus greening response will focus on earlier detection of diseased trees, so that these sources of new infections can be removed more quickly, and on new methods to control the insects that carry the bacteria. In the longerterm, technologies such as genomics could be used to develop new citrus strains that are resistant to both the bacteria and the insect.
