Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Cities of the Modern World There is a saying, as Old as it is true, that he who would be a writer must first Of all have something to write - something new to tell, or some new or better way of putting forth what is already known. This volume has not been called into existence as some thing new, but because there was not, so far as could be found, any work devoted en titely to a description of the outward appearance and real position of the great cities OF the modern world. A metropolis represents a focus of power; the chief forces of a country's civilization are centered in its great towns; and it has been believed that in giving a description of the large cities of the chief countries of the world, and bringing them together in a classified volume, there will be presented in a condensed form the leading features, not only of the great cities of the world, as a whole, but also of the civic national life of all the important countries of the globe. The endeavor has been to prepare a book instructive and interesting to readers of all ages, but especially to place before young people a clear and, in a measure, complete idea Of the greatest cities of our time, rated according to size, importance in intellectual, commercial, and manu facturing power, and descriptive of population and architectural appearance. In all cases the aim has been to make the leading features - either of a single city or a national group - stand out prominently and leave the strongest impression. To combine all these characteristics into a single volume upon so broad a subject it has been necessary to consult a multitude of authorities; and, although these are far too many for the briefest enumeration. It is but just to acknowledge that valuable aid has been received from the standard encyclopaedias and from nearly all the leading works of reference of both special and general character whose scope comes in any way within that of the Great. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Cities of the World Ir is a somewhat ungracious task to pick and choose from among the World's metropolises a certain number to be classified as the Great Cities of the World. To the inhabitant of every busy city his own town is not only great, but the greatest. If not in population then in tradition, history or surroundings, the claim to greatness will be proudly advanced and as strenuously insisted upon, and woe unto him who seeks to dim the luster or belittle the proportions of the city's record of importance. In this compilation, however, the editor has sought to avoid the disputed question of constructive greatness, and to base the selection rather upon the single claim to bigness as given by the census returns. Population is, after all, the one material test - even wealth and commerce standing below it in comparison. Many a goodly city of our own land should really have place in this list if the wealth of its citizens, the importance of its manufactures or its trade, and the position it holds in the ever lengthening honor-roll of progressive American cities were here to have consideration. And every such city, when compared with the sleepy, retrogressive and often tumble-down towns of the far-off Orient or of those less pushing nationalities familiarly known as the effete monarchies of Europe would surely have a better claim to the distinctive title of Great cities. In the limited space allowed him, however, the editor has striven to do justice to all lands - with, perhaps, just a shade of favoritism toward America. The voice of the census-taker has been heard in the land even while this book has been preparing, and the relative position of the cities as given in the volume may not be in strict accord with the result of the investigations of these modern inquisitors but the endeavor has been made to make the order taken as nearly correct as possible, for not all the earth's cities are of the character of many of those Oriental towns where the census-enumerator is unknown and where the population, always estimated, has a fluctuating margin that varies from two hundred thousand to a million. Book excerpt: Fat City is a vivid novel of allegiance and defeat, of the potent promise of the good life and the desperation and drink that waylay those whom it eludes. Stockton, California is the setting: the Lido Gym, the Hotel Coma, Main Street lunchrooms and dingy bars, days like long twilights in houses obscured by untrimmed shrubs and black walnut trees. When two men meet in the ring -- the retired boxer Billy Tully and the newcomer Ernie Munger - their brief bout sets into motion their hidden fates, initiating young Ernie into the company of men and luring Tully back into training. In a dispassionate and composed voice, Gardner narrates their swings of fortune, and the plodding optimism of their manager Ruben Luna, as he watches the most promising boys one by one succumb to some undefined weakness; still, "There was always someone who wanted to fight."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Towns of Italy: The Cities of Old Venetia In the succeeding era of the despots, the Veneto maintained its leading position. In the Polesine it produced that resplendent race of tyrants, the oldest and most cultured of all, who from their conquest of that district descended upon Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio, placing the proud name of este amongst the antecedents of all royal lines. From the Trevisan Marches appeared that most famous and powerful of early despots, Ezzelino da Romano, who reduced the whole province beneath his bloody yoke, and has left in many a town his still visible and fearful imprint. The subsequent Della Carrara of Padua, and Della Scala of Verona, stood foremost among the tyrants of the dawning Renaissance, illustrious for their con quests as for their patronage of science, literature, and the arts, and they began the remodeling of their subject cities on the alluring lines of to-day. After them came the mightier power which caused their fall, the great Republic that stretched her resistless arms slowly over the whole eastern plain, endowing it for all time with the lustre of her name. Venice brought to the long battling cities peace, order, prosperity, and a benevolent, paternal rule that caused them to leap forward in the onrush of the Renaissance, and develop those magnificent schools of painting, sculpt ure, and architecture which made Venetia the jewel casket of Italy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of American Cities The aim of this volume is to describe, in a summary way, the machinery of city government in the United States. In its various chapters an endeavor has been made to outline the growth of American cities, to explain the present-day powers and duties of the city as a municipal corporation, to describe the different organs of municipal government, and to make clear the relations which these bear to one another. The book deals with government rather than with administration, with the framework rather than with the functioning mechanism of the municipal organization. This is not because the latter is in any sense regarded as the less important of the two; but merely because it is proposed to deal fully with that phase of the subject in a later volume. Even as respects governmental organization, moreover, no attempt has been made to cover every point in full detail. I have tried to do no more than to provide, both for the college student of municipal government and for the general reader, an introduction to the study of a very large and important subject. Those who desire more definite or more extensive information than the text contains will find some suggestions at the end of each chapter. In an age when men appear far too ready to proceed with a diagnosis and to prescribe remedies without much preliminary study of the anatomy and the physiology of city government, too much stress upon the importance of the latter branches of the subject can scarcely be laid.
