Book excerpt: Right after high school, Joe Goffman left sleepy Bush Falls, Connecticut and never looked back. Then he wrote a novel savaging everything in town, a novel that became a national bestseller and a huge hit movie. Fifteen years later, Joe is struggling to avoid the sophomore slump with his next novel when he gets a call: his father's had a stroke, so it's back to Bush Falls for the town's most famous pariah. His brother avoids him, his former classmates beat him up, and the members of the book club just hurl their copies of Bush Falls at his house. But with the help of some old friends, Joe discovers that coming home isn't all bad—and that maybe the best things in life are second chances. Fans of Nick Hornby and Jennifer Weiner will love this book, by turns howling funny, fiercely intelligent, and achingly poignant. As evidenced by The Book of Joe's success in both the foreign and movie markets, Jonathan Tropper has created a compelling, incredibly resonant story.

Book excerpt: - Featured in "Best YA of 2019" (Ginger Nuts of Horror, the UK's #1 Horror Review Site) - Winner of "2019 Indie Book Award" (Crossroad Reviews) - One of the "10 Best Books of 2019" (Inspired Chaos Books) Supernatural meets Mean Girls in this YA horror mystery for older teens. Sixteen-year-old Anna sees things from another world, the spiritual world, a skill that isn't exactly useful in high school. It's bad enough that her mother, possessed by a demon, took her own life when Anna was a child, a loss she remains tortured by. Now her father makes his living "clearing" haunted objects, and Anna's job as his assistant makes her a social misfit. Most kids in her suburban New Jersey town refer to her just as Goblin Girl. Only Freddy and Dor remain loyal friends. But Anna's so focused on her own problems, she's missed that her connection with Freddy is moving beyond the friend zone and that Dor is in crisis. As junior year approaches, a rare solar storm lights up the night skies and the citizens of Bloomtown begin to act strangely: Anna's teachers lash out, her best friends withdraw, and the school bullies go from mean to murderous. When Anna realizes she can harness this evil power, she sets out to save Bloomtown and the only family she has left. But to do so, she must keep her own increasingly dark urges at bay. *Trigger Warnings*: suicide (while possessed), suicide ideation, bullying, mental illness (hoarding), self-harm, pet harm, predatory and abusive adults in positions of power.

Book excerpt: After her temper led her to walk out on yet another convenience store job, Cindy needed to find herself a new job fast, otherwise she'd end up broke and living on the streets. After discussing the situation with her apartment manager, he informs her that he has a brother who's been looking to hire an assistant. The only problem is that he's a private investigator, which is a career field that she has no experience in whatsoever. Still, she was pretty much ready to jump at any opportunity. It was a chance at not only quick employment, but possibly a whole new career that would get her out of the convenience store business once and for all. As it turns out, being a private detective isn't as glamorous as they make it look on television. It comes with certain indignities and moral issues that she'd never really considered before. Not only that, but her new boss, Frank, seems to delight in going out of his way to piss her off. The only thing he seems to enjoy more than pissing her off, is complaining about how horrible her coffee is. Still, for some reason that she can't seem to figure out, he also goes out of his way to help her succeed in any way he possibly can. While Frank can be terribly passive aggressive, he's nothing compared to his sister Kayla. She's like a nightmare on wheels, with no empathy, and no filter whatsoever. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth next, but it's a safe bet that it'll be something infuriating. When your temper is already the stuff of legends, having to deal with someone like her, without the encounter ending in a murder rap, requires a tremendous amount of willpower. The one thing that Cindy has going for her is that she's got a super high aptitude for the job. All she needs to do in order to succeed is to work hard, learn how to control that legendary temper of hers, and most importantly, learn how to make a decent cup of coffee. The first two are relatively simple. The third...not so much.

Book excerpt: A secret tore best friends Evelyn “Button” Peters and Winnalee Malone apart. Now, nearly a decade later, a secret brings them back together. Nine years ago Button and Winnalee began recording observations in their Book of Bright Ideas, a tome they believed would solve the mystery of how to live a mistake-free life. Now it’s 1970, a time of peace, love, war, and personal heartbreak. Button’s mother is dead and her grieving father has all but abandoned his children. Quiet, thoughtful Button has traded college for a sewing job in her mother’s bridal shop to help her Aunt Verdella raise her whirlwind six-year-old brother. In Button’s free time, she writes letters to the boy she loved from afar through high school, hoping he will come to love her as more than a friend. Then, like that magical Wisconsin summer of ’61, Button is greeted with the wild, gusty arrival of Winnalee. Now a beautiful flower child, Winnalee is everything Button is not. She’s been to Woodstock and enjoys “free love,” but their steadfast bond of friendship is tested as Button begins to notice the cracks in Winnalee’s carefree façade. And then Winnalee’s mother arrives with a surprise that Button never sees coming, and the fiery determination to put things right in both families once and for all.

Book excerpt: A poignant, “raw[,] and tender” (The New York Times Book Review) memoir told in essays and graphic shorts about what life looks like twenty years after recovery from addiction—and how to live with the past as a parent, writer, and sober person—from a regular opener for David Sedaris. In the opening of this “unexpectedly uplifting...masterfully crafted memoir” (Shelf Awareness, starred review) Cindy, twenty years into recovery after a heroin addiction, grapples with how to tell her nine-year-old son about her past. She wants him to learn this history from her, not anyone else; but she worries about the effect this truth may have on him. Told in essays and graphic narrative shorts, Mother Noise is a stunning memoir that delves deep into our responsibilities as parents while celebrating the moments of grace and generosity that mark a true friendship—in this case, her benefactor and champion through the years, David Sedaris. This is a powerful memoir about addiction, motherhood, and Cindy’s ongoing effort to reconcile the two. Are we required to share with our children the painful details of our past, or do we owe them protection from the harsh truth of who we were before? With dark humor and brutal, clear-eyed honesty, Mother Noise is “a full-throated anthem of hope, [that] lends light to a dark issue” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Book excerpt: For Dick and Kathi Immel, life was changing at an uncomfortably fast pace. The Immels had started a family soon after Dick completed his service in the Korean War then took a job as the director of housing at Chico State in Northern California to be near Dicks parents. Now its 1966, and they discover that they are not prepared to let go of the father knows best approach to life that the students in Chico have so unceremoniously shoved aside. Situations like student protests and drugs abound. Dick has not been trained to deal with these issues, and Kathi, prone to psychological breakdowns, cant deal with the constant stress. A switch to teaching at a junior high school calms things down. But then dread sets in when Merreli, their ordinarily cheerful fifth-grade daughter, comes home one day disturbed about peer pressure to try drugs. Looking for an escape to a place where good old-fashioned family values still thrive, Dick becomes interested in the back-to-the-land movement advocated by the new magazine Mother Earth News. Before they know it, the whole family of five is packed into the Plymouth station wagon and heading to Maine. The next decade is filled with life lessonssome humorous and others, deadly seriousas the young family discovers that the simple life is not quite so simple after all. Although the Immels are dubbed Damn Californians by the neighbor who helps them out of one predicament after another, they learn what granite strength of character it takes to survive the severe winters and thrive on the rocky land so far away from Californias sunny shores. Dick Immels matter-of-fact tone, down-to-earth sense of humor, and gifted storytelling combine to make his memoir a delightful read celebrating the pioneering determination that is one of Americas most enduring strengths. Its inspiring, for if this bunch can start a new life and overcome so many unforeseen obstacles, so can you!
