Book excerpt: This project began with my decision to interview and/or read about 100 alumni and/or their parents who were educated in those inner city Catholic schools between 1940-1970. Their personal stories are at the core of this narrative that details the Catholic church’s impact on their lives. In addition, I wanted to write about the collaborative efforts of the members of the many religious orders and lay ministers who were instrumental in creating a disciplined, supportive and productive learning environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some who were buried in Cincinnati's cemeteries, the graveyard is not the last stop on life's train. While today Cincinnati is one of the most populous and prosperous cities in the country, its past was not always as bright as its present--from the infamous murder of Pearl Bryan and the 19th century cholera epidemics, to the body snatchers and notorious "resurrection men" who would steal freshly-interred bodies to sell to medical colleges, even going as far to steal the corpse of Pres. Benjamin Harrison's father. In a city teeming with immigrants and transients, these "sack 'em up" grave robbers had ample opportunities to supply cadavers to Cincinnati's medical schools for a hefty profit, and if fresh graves weren't available, they simply lurked for victims in the saloons and dark alleys of Vine Street and the West End. Cincinnati Cemeteries is not only a history of graveyards and their occupants, but also investigates the culture of death and dying in Cincinnati.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century Cincinnati was northern in its geography, southern in its economy and politics, and western in its commercial aspirations. While those identities presented a crossroad of opportunity for native whites and immigrants, African Americans endured economic repression and a denial of civil rights, compounded by extreme and frequent mob violence. No other northern city rivaled Cincinnati's vicious mob spirit. Frontiers of Freedom follows the black community as it moved from alienation and vulnerability in the 1820s toward collective consciousness and, eventually, political self-respect and self-determination. As author Nikki M. Taylor points out, this was a community that at times supported all-black communities, armed self-defense, and separate, but independent, black schools. Black Cincinnati's strategies to gain equality and citizenship were as dynamic as they were effective. When the black community united in armed defense of its homes and property during an 1841 mob attack, it demonstrated that it was no longer willing to be exiled from the city as it had been in 1829. Frontiers of Freedom chronicles alternating moments of triumph and tribulation, of pride and pain; but more than anything, it chronicles the resilience of the black community in a particularly difficult urban context at a defining moment in American history.

Book excerpt: In 1926 Wendell Phillips Dabney published his first book, Cincinnati's Colored Citizens, which was an unprecedented review of the city's most successful and important African American citizens. Never before had a publication marshaled together such an immense amount of historical, sociological, statistical, and biographical information about Cincinnati's black community. Its nine chapters, well illustrated with photographs, provided a wealth of information about black schools, churches, businesses, property owners, benevolent organizations, and much more. Cincinnati's Colored Citizens remains today an important piece of Cincinnati's rich African American heritage and a critical resource for those interested in the history of the Queen City.

Book excerpt: The West End neighborhood of Cincinnati was a thriving community of 25,757 residents when the city decided to move forward with "slum clearance." This area, rebranded as "Kenyon-Barr" also contained 2,800 residential buildings with 10,295 dwelling units. These residents made up 4.75% of the city's entire population. Yet when the city of Cincinnati decided to enact urban redevelopment plans based on Title 1 of the Housing Act of 1949, the majority of the neighborhood was demolished for commercial and light industrial uses. The question remains at what cost to the neighborhood's residents? The demolition of much of the urban fabric of the West End has also demolished the community's shared identity and connection to the city of Cincinnati. This problem is compounded as the current rapid redevelopment of the nearby Over-the-Rhine neighborhood is beginning to push new residential and commercial development into the small section of what remains of the West End, again leaving residents to wonder if they are living in a vicious cycle in which their loss is always the city's gain. While "urban renewal" as an agent of change has been analyzed in numerous cities and countries, and in its varying degrees, and styles, Cincinnati has not paid attention to its urban renewal history, and the loss of the historic built environment in the West End. This work documents that story and ultimately shows how engaging in urban renewal in the mid-twentieth century continues to effect planning decisions in the West End of Cincinnati today.

Book excerpt: A “superbly written, richly illustrated” guide to the animals who lived 450 million years ago—in the fossil-rich area where Cincinnati, Ohio now stands (Rocks & Minerals). The region around Cincinnati, Ohio, is known throughout the world for the abundant and beautiful fossils found in limestones and shales that were deposited as sediments on the sea floor during the Ordovician Period, about 450 million years ago—some 250 million years before the dinosaurs lived. In Ordovician time, the shallow sea that covered much of what is now the North American continent teemed with marine life. The Cincinnati area has yielded some of the world’s most abundant and best-preserved fossils of invertebrate animals such as trilobites, bryozoans, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoderms, and graptolites. So famous are the Ordovician fossils and rocks of the Cincinnati region that geologists use the term “Cincinnatian” for strata of the same age all over North America. This book synthesizes more than 150 years of research on this fossil treasure-trove, describing and illustrating the fossils, the life habits of the animals represented, their communities, and living relatives, as well as the nature of the rock strata in which they are found and the environmental conditions of the ancient sea. “A fascinating glimpse of a long-extinct ecosystem.” —Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cincinnati emerged from a tumultuous 19th century as a growing metropolis committed to city planning. The most ambitious plan of the early twentieth century, the Cincinnati Subway, was doomed to failure. Construction began in 1920 and ended in 1927 when the money had run out. Today, two miles of empty subway tunnels still lie beneath Cincinnati, waiting to be used. The Cincinnati Subway tells the whole story, from the turbulent times in the 1880s to the ultimate failure of "Cincinnati's White Elephant." Along the way, the reader will learn about what was happening in Cincinnati during the growth of the subway-from the Courthouse Riots in 1884 to life in the Queen City during World War II.
