Granovetter considera que las decisiones de los individuos y de los colectivos están intersecadas por la economía, la cultura, la historia, las instituciones y las relaciones dentro y entre los grupos. Los humanos se mueven por el cálculo racional, pero también por factores subjetivos: confianza en personas o grupos, normas sociales, creencias religiosas o morales, rasgos psicológicos, redes sociales disponibles y relaciones de poder. Hasta la casualidad está determinada por estas redes. Estos resortes aportan seguridad y pertenencia, pero también tensiones contradictorias. El cálculo económico puede ser postergado. Las variables que inciden sobre una situación dependen de muchos factores, a veces coyunturales, por lo que los resultados pueden ser inesperados, pero no irracionales. Granovetter desborda las fronteras entre ciencias sociales. Considera la importancia de las normas, la confianza y la ansiedad de los individuos al romperlas. La lógica racional está presente en las organizaciones, pero también la subjetividad de los lazos personales o de grupo. Las lógicas de producción pueden estandarizarse, pero acaban produciendo problemas «muy humanos». La lógica del poder puede imponerse, pero hay huecos en las estructuras en los que surgen oportunidades de intermediación que tienden a ser cubiertos por la densidad de relaciones entre los grupos, o no. Concluye que los individuos se mueven en los intersticios entre diversas instituciones sociales y se guían por lógicas variables. La acción social nunca es «monológica» aunque oscila en un repertorio finito de salidas a cada situación definida por las vigas maestras de la sociedad y la economía en cada momento. La presente obra recoge un interesante arsenal empírico para demostrarlo.
