Book Synopsis The Bluefin Tuna Fishery in the Bay of Biscay by : José Luis Cort
Download or read book The Bluefin Tuna Fishery in the Bay of Biscay written by José Luis Cort and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is an original contribution to the knowledge on fishing and research associated with one of the most enigmatic fish of our seas: bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (L.). Based on available evidence, it reconstructs the possible methods used to catch large spawners in the Strait of Gibraltar thousands of years ago and describes the much more recent overfishing that led to a great reduction in the catches of the trap fishery on the area and the disappearance of the northern European fisheries. It is the first book to relate the overfishing of juvenile fishes in certain areas to the decline of large spawners in other very distant areas, revealing one of the main underlying causes of this decline, which has remained a mystery to the fishing sector and scientists alike for over 50 years. This finding should serve to prevent similar cases from arising in the future.

Book Synopsis Ciencias y sociedad by : Vinck, Dominique
Download or read book Ciencias y sociedad written by Vinck, Dominique and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Global Social Sciences by : Michael Vessuri, Hebe Kuhn
Download or read book The Global Social Sciences written by Michael Vessuri, Hebe Kuhn and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European social sciences tend to absorb criticism that has been passed on the European approach and re-label it as a part of what the critique opposes; criticism of European social sciences by “subaltern” social sciences, their “talking back”, has become a frequent line of reflection in European social sciences. The re-labelling of the critique of the European approach to social sciences towards a critique from “Southern” social sciences of “Western” social sciences has somehow turned “Southern” as well as “Western” social sciences into competing contributors to the same “globalizing” social sciences. Both are no longer arguing about the European approach to social sciences but about which social thought from which part of the globe prevails. If the critique becomes a part of what it opposes, one might conclude that the European social sciences are very adaptable and capable of learning. One might, however, also raise the question whether there is anything wrong with the criticism of the European social sciences; or, for that matter, whether there is anything wrong with the European social sciences themselves. The contributions in this book discuss these questions from different angles: They revisit the mainstream critique of the European social sciences, and they suggest new arguments criticizing social science theories that may be found as often in the “Western” as in the “Southern” discourse.
Book Synopsis The Presented Past by : B. L. Molyneaux
Download or read book The Presented Past written by B. L. Molyneaux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presented Past is concerned with the differences between the comparatively static, well-understood way in which the past is presented in schools, museums and at historic sites compared to the approaches currently being explored in contemporary archaeology. It challenges the all-too-frequent representation of the past as something finished, understood and objective, rather than something that is `constructed' and therefore open to co-existing interpretations and constant re-interpretation. Central to the book is the belief that the presentation of the past in school curricula and in museum and site interpretations will benefit from a greater use of non-documentary sources derived from archaeological study and oral histories. The book suggests that a view of the past incorporating a larger body of evidence and a wider variety of understanding will help to invigorate the way history is taught. The Presented Past will be of interest to teachers, archaeologists, cultural resource managers, in fact anyone who is concerned with how the past is presented.
