Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the biological effects of foreign chemicals (whether therapeutic drugs or chemicals present at work or in the environment) interests the biologist from a number of different and complementary viewpoints. Apart from the more obvious pharmacological and toxicological interest, the experimentalist often uses foreign chemicals to produce in experimental animals disease states similar to naturally occurring diseases, so that their pathogenetic mechanisms and therapy can be studied under controlled conditions. In addition - as Claude Bernard pointed out over a century ago - foreign chemicals can be employed as instruments to analyze the most delicate vital processes; much can be learned about the physiological processes themselves by a careful study of the mechanisms by which these are altered by chemicals. The field of heme and hemoproteins offers an example of the interplay of these different approaches. Their metabolism can be altered by therapeutic drugs and other foreign chemicals and this results in a variety of biological responses that transcend the boundaries of pharmacology into the confines of clinical medi cine, genetics, toxicology, biochemistry and physiology. In this book a multidisciplinary approach to the study of heme metabolism is presented including the effect of chemicals on heme metabolism in patients, the results of experimental work in the whole animal, as well as in vitro studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excluding the biological polymers proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, modified tetrapyrroles are the biological molecules that have had the greatest impact on the evolution of life over the past 4 billion years. They are involved in a wide variety of fundamental processes that underpin central primary metabolism in all kingdoms of life, from photosynthesis to methanogenesis. Moreover, they bring colour into the world and it is for this reason that these compounds have been appropriately dubbed the ‘pigments of life’. To understand how and why these molecules have been so universally integrated into the life processes one has to appreciate the chemical properties of the tetrapyrrole scaffold and, where appropriate, the chemical characteristics of the centrally chelated metal ion. This book addresses why these molecules are employed in Nature, how they are made and what happens to them after they have finished their usefulness.

Book excerpt: Second International Pharmacological Meeting, Volume 4: Drugs and Enzymes is a collection of papers presented at the Second International Pharmacological Meeting on August 20-23, 1963. This volume is organized into two sections encompassing 41 chapters. The first section discusses the relationship between biochemical effects of drugs in vitro and their pharmacological effect in vivo. This section specifically examines the correlation between the action of substances on isolated smooth muscle and on the central nervous system, as well as the behavior of a centrally-acting drug and enzyme in the ion movement in the system. The second section surveys the biochemical mechanisms of drug toxicity. Considerable chapters in this section are devoted to the effect of drug toxicity, such as altered drug metabolism, enzyme induction, morphological changes, hepatic effects, and photosensitivity. This book will prove useful to pharmacologists, neurologists, biochemists, and researchers who are interested the fields of drugs and drug toxicity.

Book excerpt: Advances in Pharmacology and Therapeutics II, Volume 5: Toxicology and Experimental Models is the fifth of a six-volume compilation of the scientific papers of invited speakers of the Eighth International Congress of Pharmacology. Organized into six parts, this book begins by elucidating the rational interpretation of species and strain differences in toxicity for the prediction of risk to man. Subsequent parts discuss the chemical interactions resulting in liver and kidney injury; the role of heme synthesis and degradation in predicting drug toxicity; and delayed toxic effects of pre- and perinatal drug exposure. Other chapters describe models of experimental peptic ulcers and therapeutic agents and models and quality control of laboratory animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metabolic Pathways, Volume II focuses on the metabolism, biosynthesis, and catabolism of amino acids. The selection first offers information on nitrogen and carbon metabolism of amino acids. Discussions focus on amino acids linked with citric acid cycle, sulfur amino acids, proline and hydroxyproline, histidine, hydroxyamino acids, urea biosynthesis and related systems, and deamidation. The text then ponders on the biosynthesis of amino acids and related compounds and metabolism of sulfur-containing compounds. Topics include metabolism of methionine, biotin, biological importance of sulfur in animals, interconversions of glutamic acid, ornithine, and prolines, and biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids. The publication takes a look at the synthesis of proteins, purines and pyrimidines, and nucleotides and nucleosides, including the components of nucleotides, purine degradation, and incorporation of preformed purine compounds into nucleic acids. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the metabolism, catabolism, and biosynthesis of amino acids.

Book excerpt: The Porphyrins, Volume I: Structure and Synthesis, Part Ais the first in a series of seven volumes and covers topics like nomenclature, purification, and structural determination of porphyrins, metalloporphyrins, and other related compounds. This volume serves to be a critical review of the topics covered and presents a complete and comprehensible discussion on the chemistry and biochemistry of porphyrins. The chapters in the text tackle the history and geochemistry of porphyrins and related systems. Also covered and discussed in the chapters is the synthesis of porphyrins from mono-, di-, and tetrapyrrolic intermediates. The isolation and modification of porphyrins from natural sources are also discussed. Other related compounds are also included, such as metallo-, aza-, and N-methylporphyrins, and their synthesis and properties. This book is a good introduction and reference for students studying in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry.

Book excerpt: This is the fifth set of Handbook of Porphyrin Science.Porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their numerous analogues and derivatives are materials of tremendous importance in chemistry, materials science, physics, biology and medicine. They are the red color in blood (heme) and the green in leaves (chlorophyll); they are also excellent ligands that can coordinate with almost every metal in the Periodic Table. Grounded in natural systems, porphyrins are incredibly versatile and can be modified in many ways; each new modification yields derivatives, demonstrating new chemistry, physics and biology, with a vast array of medicinal and technical applications. As porphyrins are currently employed as platforms for study of theoretical principles and applications in a wide variety of fields, the Handbook of Porphyrin Science represents a timely ongoing series dealing in detail with the synthesis, chemistry, physicochemical and medical properties and applications of polypyrrole macrocycles. Professors Karl Kadish, Kevin Smith and Roger Guilard are internationally recognized experts in the research field of porphyrins, each having his own separate area of expertise in the field. Between them, they have published over 1500 peer-reviewed papers and edited more than three dozen books on diverse topics of porphyrins and phthalocyanines. In assembling the new volumes of this unique handbook, they have selected and attracted the very best scientists in each sub-discipline as contributing authors. This handbook will prove to be a modern authoritative treatise on the subject as it is a collection of up-to-date works by world-renowned experts in the field. Complete with hundreds of figures, tables and structural formulas, and thousands of literature citations, all researchers and graduate students in this field will find the Handbook of Porphyrin Science an essential, major reference source for many years to come.
