Thus, the regular payment of a permanent officer employed to Whip dogs out of the church - the dog-whipper - is remarkable as one of the almost forgotten characteristics of the olden time but we are also led to conclude from it that the door of the church was in those times kept open daily during the Whole day. I might point to other examples of this kind. It is not improbable that Ludlow Church had some customs and practices peculiar to itself. Among these, perhaps, were the regulations relating to the pews. It appears to have been the custom to grant to an individual a piece of ground measured out on the floor of the church, upon which he himselfusually built his pew, which became his private property, and he could sell it, or leave it by will, or his heir inherited it. A part of the process of sale appears to have been a form of surrender of the pew to the parish. I have been told that this method of dealing with the pews has remained in Ludlow church down to a very recent period. We can hardly figure to ourselves the appearance the interior of the church must have pre sented, when the pews, separate from each other, of different forms and magnitudes, were scattered over it as described in the follow ing accounts. The light thus thrown upon the early history of the pew system is very important, and I have ventured to repeat in an Appendix some remarks on this part of the subject which I had made on a former occasion in reference to our Ludlow records.
