Download or read book The Salmon Way written by Amy Gulick and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before it was the "oil state," Alaska was the "salmon state" Emphasizes that salmon protection is good for Alaska Alaskans have deeply personal relationships with their salmon. These remarkable fish provide a fundamental source of food, livelihood, and identity, and connect generations and communities throughout the state. Yet while salmon are integral to the lives of many Alaskans, the habitat they need to thrive is increasingly at risk as communities and decision makers evaluate large-scale development proposals. The Salmon Way celebrates and explores the relationships between people and salmon in Alaska. Through story and images, author Amy Gulick shows us that people from wildly different backgrounds all value a salmon way of life. In researching her new book, Amy spent time with individuals whose lives are inextricably linked with salmon. Commercial fishermen take her on as crew; Alaska Native families teach her the art of preserving fish and culture; and sport fishing guides show her where to cast her line as well as her mind. Each experience expands our understanding of the "salmon way" in Alaska. Learn more atwww.thesalmonway.org

This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing Alaska’s answer to the Pioneer Woman: Two sisters share their remarkable life story as fisherwomen of the Aleutian Islands—plus 50 sustainable seafood recipes that honor the beauty of wild foods. Share in the remarkable and wild lives of Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton, the Salmon Sisters, who grew up on a homestead in the Aleutians where the family ran a commercial fishing boat in the Alaskan sea. Their book reveals through stories, recipes, and photography this outward-bound lifestyle of natural bounty, the honest work on a boat's deck, and the wholesome food that comes from local waters and land. Here are creative and simple ways to enjoy wild salmon, halibut, and spot prawns, as well as simple crafts and ideas for exploring the natural world. The sisters are committed to sustaining and celebrating the seafaring community in Alaska, and their business of selling products related to and from the ocean donates a can of wild-caught fish to local food banks for each item purchased. “To flip through the pages of Emma Teal Laukities’s and Claire Neaton’s new cookbook . . . is to be whisked away on an adventure in the country’s northernmost state.” —Martha Stewart
Download or read book Made of Salmon written by Nancy Lord and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, salmon populations are in trouble, as overfishing and habitat loss have combined to put the once-great Atlantic and Pacific Northwest runs at serious risk. Alaska, however, stands out as a rare success story: its salmon populations remain strong and healthy, the result of years of careful management and conservation programs that are rooted in a shared understanding of the importance of the fish to the life, culture, and history of the state. Made of Salmon brings together more than fifty diverse Alaska voices to celebrate the salmon and its place in Alaska life. A mix of words and images, the book interweaves longer works by some of Alaska’s finest writers with shorter, more anecdotal accounts and stunning photographs of Alaskans fishing for, catching, preserving, and eating salmon throughout the state. A love letter to a fish that has been central to Alaska life for centuries, Made of Salmon is a reminder of the stakes of this great, ongoing conservation battle.

Book Synopsis The Fishermen's Frontier by : David F. Arnold
Download or read book The Fishermen's Frontier written by David F. Arnold and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Fishermen's Frontier, David Arnold examines the economic, social, cultural, and political context in which salmon have been harvested in southeast Alaska over the past 250 years. He starts with the aboriginal fishery, in which Native fishers lived in close connection with salmon ecosystems and developed rituals and lifeways that reflected their intimacy. The transformation of the salmon fishery in southeastern Alaska from an aboriginal resource to an industrial commodity has been fraught with historical ironies. Tribal peoples -- usually considered egalitarian and communal in nature -- managed their fisheries with a strict notion of property rights, while Euro-Americans -- so vested in the notion of property and ownership -- established a common-property fishery when they arrived in the late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, federal conservation officials tried to rationalize the fishery by "improving" upon nature and promoting economic efficiency, but their uncritical embrace of scientific planning and their disregard for local knowledge degraded salmon habitat and encouraged a backlash from small-boat fishermen, who clung to their "irrational" ways. Meanwhile, Indian and white commercial fishermen engaged in identical labors, but established vastly different work cultures and identities based on competing notions of work and nature. Arnold concludes with a sobering analysis of the threats to present-day fishing cultures by forces beyond their control. However, the salmon fishery in southeastern Alaska is still very much alive, entangling salmon, fishermen, industrialists, scientists, and consumers in a living web of biological and human activity that has continued for thousands of years.

Download or read book The Alaska from Scratch Cookbook written by Maya Wilson and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Alaska from Scratch blogger Maya Wilson comes a beautifully scenic cookbook celebrating Alaska and its ocean-to-table, homemade food culture. When Maya Wilson and her three kids transplanted to Alaska in 2011, she didn’t know what to expect. But what she ended up finding was home—and she turned her love for the gorgeous landscapes and fresh cuisine into the now hugely popular blog Alaska from Scratch. Maya’s first book is filled with 75 delicious, family-friendly recipes that are based on the seasonality of Alaska. There’s an abundance of wild berries, so summer recipes are full of them, and to get through the cold winters, she includes hearty soups and pot pies. Her recipes—sheet pan balsamic chicken, coffee chocolate chip banana bread, and Kenai cheeseburgers—are created for busy families like hers. And of course, she incorporates plenty of the seafood Alaska is famous for: halibut poached in Thai curry, a salmon superfood salad, and local recipes like reindeer sausage and moose shepherd’s pie.

Book Synopsis Developing a Research and Restoration Plan for Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (Western Alaska) Salmon by : National Research Council
Download or read book Developing a Research and Restoration Plan for Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (Western Alaska) Salmon written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-07-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent declines in the abundance of salmon in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) region of western Alaska have created hardships for the people and communities who depend on this resource. In 2002, the AYK Sustainable Salmon Initiative (SSI) was created to undertake research to understand the reasons for this decline and to help support sustainable management in the region. This report makes recommendations for developing the research that the AYK SSI science plan should be based on, and relates the development of a restoration plan to the results of that research.
