Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronology and Index of the More Important Events in American Game Protection, 1776-1911 Game protection in the United States has been gradually developed during a period of nearly 300. Years and has been marked by an immense volume of legislation. In no other country in the world have laws for the protection of game been passed in such numbers or amended so frequently. Among the characteristic features of American game legislation are the division of birds into three groups game birds, nongame birds, and noxious species; the restrictions on hunting by nonresidents; the limitations on the quantity of game that may be killed at certain times; the prohibition of export and sale; the system of enforcement by State officers; and the mainte nance Of this system largely by receipts from hunting licenses. Book excerpt: Guide to U.S. Environmental Policy provides the analytical connections showing readers how issues and actions are translated into public policies and persistent institutions for resolving or managing environmental conflict in the U.S. The guide highlights a complex decision-making cycle that requires the cooperation of government, business, and an informed citizenry to achieve a comprehensive approach to environmental protection. The book’s topical, operational, and relational essays address development of U.S. environmental policies, the federal agencies and public and private organizations that frame and administer environmental policies, and the challenges of balancing conservation and preservation against economic development, the ongoing debates related to turning environmental concerns into environmental management, and the role of the U.S. in international organizations that facilitate global environmental governance. Key Features: 30 essays by leading conservationists and scholars in the field investigate the fundamental political, social, and economic processes and forces driving policy decisions about the protection and future of the environment. Essential themes traced through the chapters include natural resource allocation and preservation, human health, rights of indigenous peoples, benefits of recycling, economic and other policy areas impacted by responses to green concerns, international cooperation, and immediate and long-term costs associated with environmental policy. The essays explore the impact made by key environmental policymakers, presidents, and politicians, as well as the topical issues that have influenced U.S. environmental public policy from the colonial period to the present day. A summary of regulatory agencies for environmental policy, a selected bibliography, and a thorough index are included. This must-have reference for political science and public policy students who seek to understand the forces that U.S. environmental policy is suitable for academic, public, high school, government, and professional libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Game Protection and Propagation in America: A Handbook of Practical Information for Officials and Others Interested in the Cause of Conservation of Wild Life Game protection, as the term is understood in this country, consists largely in the enactment and enforcement of statutes regulating the time when, the manner and means by which, and the amount of, game that may be killed or taken by the public. These statutes are enforced by re cognized Officers of the State. Hence, most Of the questions and problems involved in game protection are matters of law, with collateral practical questions of fact and Science. In the following pages the author has attempted to discuss these questions, and point out such as have been settled by the authorities, both legal and scientific. Within recent years a large number of legal points have been settled by the appellate courts of the country, which has served to clarify them and dispel doubt. It is believed that every important case of this kind has been. Examined and the information adduced therefrom used in some portion Of this work. These great forest reservations thus become the nurseries and breeding-grounds of game and of the large wild animals which are elsewhere inevitably exterminated by the march of settlement. Already several such reservations have been established in different States, both by Na tional and by State action - for instance, the Adirondack Reserve in New York, the Col orado Canon Reserve in Arizona, the big timber reserves in Colorado and Washing ton, the island set apart in Alaska as an undisturbed breeding-ground for salmon and sea-fowl, the Yosemite Valley and the Se. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Interest in Game Protection Some game birds are very valuable to the farmer as de stroyers of insects and other pests; some game mammals, on the contrary, are sometimes destructive to his crops or trees; but the farmer who takes advantage of the laws enacted for the prevention of trespass, the protection of crops and the conserva tion of game and birds, may thereby add to his prosperity as well as to his pleasure in life, and by fostering the increase of fish, game and birds he may make life more attractive to his boys, and thus help to keep them on the farm. This paper will be devoted mainly to the material advantages that the farmer may derive from the protection of wild game, and particularly game birds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights offer a vision of international justice that today’s idealistic millions hold dear. Yet the very concept on which the movement is based became familiar only a few decades ago when it profoundly reshaped our hopes for an improved humanity. In this pioneering book, Samuel Moyn elevates that extraordinary transformation to center stage and asks what it reveals about the ideal’s troubled present and uncertain future. For some, human rights stretch back to the dawn of Western civilization, the age of the American and French Revolutions, or the post–World War II moment when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was framed. Revisiting these episodes in a dramatic tour of humanity’s moral history, The Last Utopia shows that it was in the decade after 1968 that human rights began to make sense to broad communities of people as the proper cause of justice. Across eastern and western Europe, as well as throughout the United States and Latin America, human rights crystallized in a few short years as social activism and political rhetoric moved it from the hallways of the United Nations to the global forefront. It was on the ruins of earlier political utopias, Moyn argues, that human rights achieved contemporary prominence. The morality of individual rights substituted for the soiled political dreams of revolutionary communism and nationalism as international law became an alternative to popular struggle and bloody violence. But as the ideal of human rights enters into rival political agendas, it requires more vigilance and scrutiny than when it became the watchword of our hopes.
