Book Synopsis Chronology of the American West by : Scott C. Zeman
Download or read book Chronology of the American West written by Scott C. Zeman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-part chronology presents the unfolding of the American West from 23,000 B.C.E. to A.D. 2001 Not long ago, the story of the American West was an uncomplicated tale. Its theme was "The Winning of the West," and its plot simply followed Euro-Americans as they galloped across the continent. But throughout the last two decades, historians like Scott C. Zeman have begun to examine the story and separate the myths from the facts. Today the history of the American West is about the land itself; about conquest and colonization; about migration and social change. Its heroes are not only white men, but also women and children, and peoples of African, Asian, Native American, and European descent. In this up to date chronology, readers can explore hundreds of political, social, and cultural plot points, from the arrival of the continent's first migrants more than 20,000 years ago to the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890, and from the completion of the trans-Alaska pipeline in 1977 to the shootings at Columbine High School in 2000.

The editors at americasbesthistory.com has put together this timeline of American history in an easy to read fashion, which mirrors the way the website categorizes the most important events of each year. It is meant as a clear and concise account of the events in short paragraph form, without an overly academic tone. You won't find footnotes and opinion, but you will find a good starting off place to dive more deeply into each subject and as a reminder of how the events of United States history took shape, about how the population of the nation grew, about how politics and political events shaped each decade, and about our national parks and heritage that tell the stories of each. The information provided within this timeline was gleaned from various sources, as well as the knowledge and experience of the America's Best History staff, and should not be considered a scholarly work per se, but as a jumping off point for the reader to go into more detail about a particular topic of their interest.

Book Synopsis Defender of Canada by : Tanya Grodzinski
Download or read book Defender of Canada written by Tanya Grodzinski and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When war broke out between Great Britain and the United States in 1812, Sir George Prevost, captain general and governor in chief of British North America, was responsible for defending a group of North American colonies that stretched as far as the distance from Paris to Moscow. He also commanded one of the largest British overseas forces during the Napoleonic Wars. Defender of Canada, the first book-length examination of Prevost’s career, offers a reinterpretation of the general’s military leadership in the War of 1812. Historian John R. Grodzinski shows that Prevost deserves far greater credit for the successful defense of Canada than he has heretofore received. Earlier accounts portrayed Prevost as overly cautious and attributed the preservation of Canada to other officers, but Grodzinski challenges these assumptions and restores the general to his rightful place as British North America’s key military figure during the War of 1812. Grodzinski shows that Prevost’s strategic insight enabled him to enact a practicable defense despite scarce resources and to ably integrate naval power into his defensive plans. Prevost’s range of responsibilities in British North America were daunting. They included overseeing joint endeavors with Indian allies, managing logistical matters, monitoring naval construction and personnel needs, supervising colonial governments, and commanding the defense of Canada. Tasked with protecting an extensive and complex territory, Prevost employed a mix of soldiers, sailors, locally raised forces, and indigenous people in taking advantage of the American military’s weaknesses to defeat most of its plans. Following his recall to Britain in 1815 after the defeat at the Battle of Plattsburgh, Prevost would have been court-martialed had he not died unexpectedly. In carefully examining the charges leveled against Prevost, Grodzinski shows the general to have preserved the integrity of Canada, allowing diplomats to ensure its continued existence.

Book Synopsis Radiocarbon Dates, Stone Tools and the Origin of Herding on the West Coast of South Africa by : Karim Sadr
Download or read book Radiocarbon Dates, Stone Tools and the Origin of Herding on the West Coast of South Africa written by Karim Sadr and published by Africa Magna Verlag. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph makes a significant contribution to answering some long standing questions in the Later Stone Age prehistory of southern Africa and to archaeological methods in general. The Vredenburg Peninsula Survey project originally set out to confirm that the first herders at the south-western Cape were immigrant Khoekhoe-speakers who had migrated from farther north about two thousand years ago. It failed to find evidence to support this hypothesis and instead ended up making a solid contribution to documenting the regional transition from formal, microlithic technology to the informal stone tool repertoire that marks the immediately Pre-Colonial period. It also throws light on another regional question concerning the rise and fall of stone adze technology. Its contribution to survey methodology is of worldwide importance and this is the first time an archaeologist has gambled on dating surface shell on a large scale and it has paid off handsomely. Coastal archaeologists on all continents should take note of this, and be rightly encouraged.
