I was looking forward to see the faces and shaking the hands of several of the names I had been working with over the phone and through e-mail over the years. However since the trip was for only 4 days I thought the 24-hour plane flight was going to be the only adventure I had in store. Well the four-day trip turned out to be a 14-day trip, which ended up being a several month trip and eventually ended up almost a year in duration that spanned several countries. So I had plenty of time to get into trouble, experience a new culture and be a little adventurous. This is a collection of the short stories that I sent home during my assignments in Manila, Trinidad and Indonesia, I hope you enjoy them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of compelling British whodunits featuring Detective Inspector Sloan—from a CWA Diamond Dagger winner and “most ingenious” author (The New Yorker). Over the course of twenty-four crime novels set in the fictional County of Calleshire, England, and featuring the sleuthing team of shrewd Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan and his less-than-shrewd sidekick, Detective Constable William Crosby, award-winning author Catherine Aird maintained the perfect balance between cozy village mystery and police procedural. These three entertaining crime novels offer “the very best in British mystery” (The New Yorker). Parting Breath: On the campus of the University of Calleshire, a young woman finds a student slumped against a cloister’s column, covered in blood. Before he dies, he manages to breathe the words “twenty-six minutes”—which is all Sloan and Crosby have to go on to solve a case that’s anything but elementary. Some Die Eloquent: As Sloan learns he is about to become a father, a suspicious death demands his attention. It turns out that a murdered mistress at the Girls’ Grammar School in Berebury was secretly a very wealthy woman. What was an elderly chemistry teacher doing with a small fortune—and who was willing to kill to get it? Passing Strange: When the village spinster, a nurse who also played the organ every Sunday at church, is found strangled behind a fortune-teller’s booth, Calleshire’s greatest detective will need more than a crystal ball to see who killed her.

Book excerpt: “It will be a dangerous mission. I don’t expect that any of us will survive. But it’s a chance to save mankind, to save our world. Maybe the last chance.” By the end of the twenty-third century, Earth is a plague-ridden, war-ravaged cesspool dominated by megacorporations whose ruthless armies fight one another for power and for the very scarce resources there are left. Capitol fighters Mitch Hunter and Nathan Rooker are battling the opposing forces of the Bauhaus corporation when a cannon blast exposes and destroys an ancient stone seal in the ground. From the bowels of the Earth crawl hordes of necromutants with razorlike boneblades for arms, hideous humanoids that thrive and multiply by commandeering the bodies of dying soldiers. Mitch barely escapes– only to discover that both the rise of the mutants and the “Deliverer” who will save humanity have been prophesied. Unless Mitch and a group of warriors from each of the megacorporations succeed in reaching the hidden horrors and wiping out the mutant scourge, ouir world will literally become a hell on Earth. Now a major motion picture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survivors manual to death from overdose. This is the story of one mothers grief recovery after her 32 year old daughter died from a heroin overdose in 2009. In the author's words "So perhaps you thought this was going to be a tale of how I traveled to some exotic land, how I left everything behind, and how I met fellow travelers on some road to Zanzibar to recover from my grief. Perhaps you thought this was going to be a story of redemption, of how I lost myself in booze and then found myself on some street corner or dark alley, and then got my life back together again. No, rather this is the story of how I went deep inside myself and found a reservoir of strength in my day to day existence, in the small motions and rituals of ordinary life. For many of us do not have the luxury of “leaving it all behind”. We must move forward, inch by inch, increment by increment, waking up each day to face a world that seems so empty to us now, climbing an internal mountain every single day, an epic mountain taller than Mt. Everest, a mountain that the outside world cannot view. So to you, fellow grief travelers, I say, be tough in your own little way. Pull on your sturdy grief knapsack with all the sturdy grief supplies in it, ropes and pulleys, and trudge your way up the grief mountain. Because I’ll be waiting for you at the top."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For aeons the universe has been ruled by the council of the Educational and Scientific Research Anomaly (ESRA). Their CEO, Draper, has developed a program of sending trainees to manage emerging planetary systems according to the ESRA doctrine of "create life in your own image." Draper sends what seems to be his favourite trainee, God, to the Sun system in the Milky Way to do just that, but, unbeknown to Draper, God has his own theory on life creation called evolution. God sets evolution in motion on the planet he has called Earth but when the development is too slow he starts to meddle with the process causing the planet to be populated by giant creatures he calls dinosaurs. He reports back to Draper who strangely, rather than giving him a bollicking, summons the Intergalactic Trouble-shooter, Armageddon, to help....... Armageddon manages to sort most of the problems and gradually gets seduced into helping God with his other hare-brained scheme called religion. Religion takes off in different forms so God sets himself up to become a Messiah to unite them all. The plan falters when he gets a local girl pregnant but Armageddon comes up with an idea that will make the child, Jesus Christ, the said Messiah. It all goes pear shaped when the local authorities crucify Jesus but Armageddon spirits him back to ESRA where they attempt to save his life. The ruling council aren't happy but they are sufficiently intrigued with evolution and religion that they approve a watching brief on Earth. As the planet sinks into a mess of wars, conflict and religious intolerance Armageddon finds a loophole in the directive and he and God help out where they can while preparing for the return of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Beat-like jaunt through the Parisian and European jazz scene, Mike Zwerin is not unlike Jack Kerouac, Mezz Mezzrow, or Hunter S. Thompson—writers to whom, for different reasons, he owes some allegiance. What makes him special is his devotion to the troubled musicians he idolizes, and a passion for music that is blessedly contagious. Many jazz fans will know Mike Zwerin for his witty, irreverent, and undeniably hip music reviews and articles in the International Herald Tribune that have entertained us for decades. Based in Paris, or, rather, stuck there, as Zwerin likes to say, he has been a music critic for the Trib since 1979. Zwerin also had a distinguished career as a trombonist. When he was just eighteen years old, he was invited by Miles Davis to play alongside Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, and Max Roach in the band that was immortalized as The Birth of the Cool. The Parisian Jazz Chronicles offers an engaging personal account of the jazz scene in Paris in the 1980s and 1990s. Zwerin writes lovingly but unsparingly about figures he knew and interviewed— such as Dexter Gordon, Freddy Heineken, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Chet Baker, Wayne Shorter, and Melvin Van Peebles. Against this background, Zwerin tells about his own life—split allegiances to journalism and music, and to America and France, his solitary battle for sobriety, a failing marriage, and fatherhood.
