Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers fresh perspectives on the legacy of colonialism in the North-east frontiers of India, especially the Naga Hills. The book interrogates the presence of British administrators and anthropologists in the Naga Hills as part of a popular discourse on (post) colonialism. It weaves a coherent chronological sequence of events and the prevailing attitudes of administrators-cum-anthropologists to understand the whole process of colonial intervention in the Naga Hills. It examines the conventional notions of 'tribes' and 'identity' within the context of the Naga Hills. It explores the transformation of Naga Hills through the lens of colonialism, providing a critical perspective on identity and the intricate web of historical narratives. It is a must-read for scholars, anthropologists, historians, and all those intrigued by the multifaceted legacy of colonialism in the Naga Hills.

Download or read book The Colours of the Empire written by Patrícia Ferraz de Matos and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portuguese Colonial Empire established its base in Africa in the fifteenth century and would not be dissolved until 1975. This book investigates how the different populations under Portuguese rule were represented within the context of the Colonial Empire by examining the relationship between these representations and the meanings attached to the notion of ‘race’. Colour, for example, an apparently objective criterion of classification, became a synonym or near-synonym for ‘race’, a more abstract notion for which attempts were made to establish scientific credibility. Through her analysis of government documents, colonial propaganda materials and interviews, the author employs an anthropological perspective to examine how the existence of racist theories, originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, went on to inform the policy of the Estado Novo (Second Republic, 1933–1974) and the production of academic literature on ‘race’ in Portugal. This study provides insight into the relationship between the racist formulations disseminated in Portugal and the racist theories produced from the eighteenth century onward in Europe and beyond.

Book Synopsis Imperial Culture and Colonial Projects by : Diogo Ramada Curto
Download or read book Imperial Culture and Colonial Projects written by Diogo Ramada Curto and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the immeasurable political and economic changes it brought, colonial expansion exerted a powerful effect on Portuguese culture. And as this book demonstrates, the imperial culture that emerged over the course of four centuries was hardly a homogeneous whole, as triumphalist literature and other cultural forms mingled with recurrent doubts about the expansionist project. In a series of illuminating case studies, Ramada Curto follows the history and perception of major colonial initiatives while integrating the complex perspectives of participating agents to show how the empire’s life and culture were richly inflected by the operations of imperial expansion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Folkways: A Chronicle of American Life in the Reign of the Georges The restless and courageous Englishmen who fared across the sea in the seventeenth century, facing danger and death in their search for free homes in the wilderness, little dreamed that out of their adventure and toil there would rise in time a great republic and a new order of human society. There was nothing to indicate that the settlements along the seaboard, occupying the narrow strip of land between the ocean and the mountain ranges, would eventually grow into a mighty union of states that would be called "the melting-pot of the world." Book Synopsis The Colonial Chronicles; The Establishment of the Thirteen Original Colonies by : Robin St. Taw
Download or read book The Colonial Chronicles; The Establishment of the Thirteen Original Colonies written by Robin St. Taw and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colonial Chronicles is an epic multi-series set of American historical novels offering a panorama of characters and events of the Colonial Period chronicling the establishment of the Thirteen Original Colonies. Across a century and a half, the series opens with the loss of the Roanoke Colony, and concludes after the establishment of Georgia in 1732. Part Two begins in 1618 as Catholic and Protestant forces set strategic sights on European power at the start of the Thirty Years War. The Mayflower sails, establishing Plymouth Colony in 1620, and English colonization in North America grows, while Puritan political power in the English Parliament strengthens. Also, royal authority in England initiates renewed attacks on religious practices outside the Anglican Church under King Charles I, leading to increased Puritan emigration. The Plascomb Family widens its hold on Virginia land and tobacco markets after the first Indian War in 1622, and Plymouth Colony fails to recognize its brutal treatment of others beyond their wall who think differently than themselves in 1628. Diverse characters drive the narrative by folding into, blending with, and actively participating in the events, decisions, and actions resulting in each new colony's beginning, as well as larger world events, including global travel and meeting historically iconic people, finding that no history occurs in a vacuum because all societies are dynamic.

Book Synopsis Inheritance of Loss by : Yukiko Koga
Download or read book Inheritance of Loss written by Yukiko Koga and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Inheritance of Loss, anthropologist Yukiko Koga tackles complex questions of how two nations previously at war come to terms with their troubled past. Her site is Northeast China, where Japan s imperial ambitions were pursued to devastating and murderous ends in the twentieth century. There the landscape, which is still peppered with missiles and unexploded chemical weapons from the war, is the backdrop for refurbished imperial architecture and revived Japanese businesses. But the national wounds of China and Japan s history problem cannot be stitched together solely through international trade. The author shows why mutual recognition of wartime atrocities is the only thing that can allay the persistent and sporadically explosive tensions between two of the most powerful countries in the Eastern hemisphere. A milestone in memory studies that incorporates sorely needed attention to materiality and political economy, Inheritance of Loss shows just how crucial imperial legacies will continue to be despite China s and Japan s attempts to leave the past behind in pursuit of a more prosperous future."
