Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Chronicle of the Cid Every nation has its hero or heroes, and the hero of the Spanish people is Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, called El Seid or Cid (the Chief). He was a historic person who really lived and died in the eleventh century, when the provinces of Spain were under different rulers and the country was continually harassed by the Moors, who were not finally driven out until 1609. About fifty years after the death of Ruy Diaz there was written a long poem called the Poema del Cid, telling of his great deeds as a leader against the Moors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chronicle of the Cid Then began his career as a free-lance. With three hun dred followers, he left the kingdom of Alfonso, a banished man. He offered his services first to the Count of Barcelona. They were declined; He then made his way to' the Moorish King of Saragossa, by whom he. Was eagerly welcomed. Eight years he fought for him or his successors, against Moor or Christian alike, winning great renown by his daring and success, and having, by Virtue of his importance, almost royal authority. During this time he made numerous attempts at reconciliation with Alfonso, but without success. At length in 1094 he won his greatest victory, the capture of Valencia, known to this day as Valencia del Cid. It was the richest city of Spain, and there was not a King, Moor or Christian, who did not long to possess it. The Arab historians say that the Cid declared that none of his family had ever possessed a kingdom, and that from the moment when he first beheld Valencia he made up his mind to repair this omission on the part of fortune. At the head of seven thousand men, he marched against it. Destroying the suburbs, he attempted to carry it by assault, but failed, and settled down to reduce it by famine. An army of Almoravides, a fresh inroad of Moors from Africa, marched to its relief, but unavailingly, and after nine months the city yielded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Ballads: And the Chronicle of the Cid The Publishers, in uniting with them Southey's fine trans lation of the Chronicle of the Cid, believe that they are adding to the value and interest of these charming Ballads by presenting at the same time a perfect picture of the Spanish mind at the most striking and' interesting period of the na tional history. John Gibson Lockhart, the son of a minister of the Kirk of Scotland, was born 1794, and'died 1854. He married the eldest daughter of Sir Walter Scott. From 1826 to 185 3 he was the editor of the Quarterly Review. He was the author of several novels and talés, Valerius, Reginald Dalton, &c., and of a very interesting Life of Sir Walter Scott but he will probably be best known to posterity as the translator of the Spanish Ballads, to which his genius has given the spirit and life of an original work. There are n0t in it more than a scant half-dozen places where there is any real palaeographical di iculty. On the philological side, however, it would be difficult to imagine any thing worse. The text is full of lacunae and of interpolations glosses, copyists' mistakes and additions, corrections to the point of being in places almost unintelligible. Book excerpt: Makes available, for the first time in English translation, four of the principal narrative sources for the history of the Spanish kingdom of León-Castile during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Three chronicles focus primarily upon the activities of the kings of León-Castile as leaders of the Reconquest of Spain from the forces of Islam, and especially upon Fernando I (1037-65), his son Alfonso VI (1065-1109) and the latter's grandson Alfonso VII (1126-57). The fourth chronicle is a biography of the hero Rodrigo Díaz, better remembered as El Cid, and is the main source of information about his extraordinary career as a mercenary soldier who fought for Christian and Muslim alike. Covers the fascinating interaction of the Muslim and Christian worlds, each at the height of their power. Each text is prefaced by its own introduction and accompanied by explanatory notes.

Book excerpt: Chronicle Of The Cid by Various The heroic story of the King Arthur, or the Roland, of the Spaniards, less mythical but no less interesting. Robert Southey's "Chronicle of the Cid" is all translation from the Spanish, but is not translation from a single book. Its groundwork is that part of the Cronica General de Espana, the most ancient of the Prose Chronicles of Spain, in which adventures of the Cid are fully told. This old Chronicle was compiled in the reign of Alfonso the Wise, who was learned in the exact science of his time, and also a troubadour. Alfonso reigned between the years 1252 and 1284, and the Chronicle was written by the King himself, or under his immediate direction. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. In it the literature of Spain springs into life at once, strong and vigorous, without passing through an infancy of rhyming chronicle or monkish hymn or legend and it is in no small degree characteristic of a literature in which chivalry and romance play so leading a part, that, traced back to its remotest source, we should find it flowing from the achievements Of the popular national hero. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cid Campeador: A Historical Romance The "Cid Campeador" has been for centuries the great popular hero of Spain. He takes the same place in that country as King Arthur does in England, Roland, or Rolando, in France, and William Tell in Switzerland; and, like them, his life and exploits are, to a great extent, founded on popular traditions. In English-speaking countries there is very little known respecting him, and the translator ventures to place before the public a work which is considered by Spaniards to be one of the best historical romances in their literature. It is founded on a large number of ballads and other poetical pieces, extant in Spain for centuries, and on a very old work named "The Chronicle of the Cid." The Author writes in his Introduction: "The Cid is the most popular of the Castilian heroes, and not without reason, for in him are personified all the virtues of the citizen and of the soldier.
