Methylmercury, one organic form of mercury, can accumulate up the aquatic food chain and lead to high concentrations in predatory fish. When consumed by humans, contaminated fish represent a public health risk. Combustion processes, especially coal-fired power plants, are major sources of mercury contamination in the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering regulating mercury emissions from those plants. Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury reviews the health effects of methylmercury and discusses the estimation of mercury exposure from measured biomarkers, how differences between individuals affect mercury toxicity, and appropriate statistical methods for analysis of the data and thoroughly compares the epidemiological studies available on methylmercury. Included are discussions of current mercury levels on public health and a delineation of the scientific aspects and policy decisions involved in the regulation of mercury. This report is a valuable resource for individuals interested in the public health effects and regulation of mercury. The report also provides an excellent example of the implications of decisions in the risk assessment process for a larger audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are increasingly concerned about potential environmental health hazards and often ask their physicians questions such as: "Is the tap water safe to drink?" "Is it safe to live near power lines?" Unfortunately, physicians often lack the information and training related to environmental health risks needed to answer such questions. This book discusses six competency based learning objectives for all medical school students, discusses the relevance of environmental health to specific courses and clerkships, and demonstrates how to integrate environmental health into the curriculum through published case studies, some of which are included in one of the book's three appendices. Also included is a guide on where to obtain additional information for treatment, referral, and follow-up for diseases with possible environmental and/or occupational origins.

Book excerpt: Lupus, rheumatic fever, colitis, arthritis, dermatitis, insomnia, depression, hallucinations – what do all these illnesses have in common? They were all experienced by a 12-year-old girl in a case study in an American journal of child psychiatry. The cause? – mercury vapor she inhaled from mercury that had been spilled on the carpet in the room she slept in. After removing the carpet and treatment with chelation drugs, the girl returned to good health. Mercury poisoning can cause a variety of illnesses such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, ADHD, bipolar disorder, sinusitis, tinnitus, balance problems, tremor, insomnia, inflammatory bowel disease, dermatitis, excessive thirst, salivation and a host of other symptoms. Is mercury from dental amalgams affecting your health? Dental associations claim the mercury in fillings is perfectly safe, but the mercury inhaled from “silver” fillings is 15 times more toxic than lead. The World Health Organization report states that people with amalgams have a daily mercury intake of 4 to 21 micrograms of mercury per day. For many people this exceeds the Environmental Protection Agencies limit of just 7 micrograms per day. Yet there are no Government warnings about this exposure. Those who grind their teeth or chew gum will have even higher exposure. If you eat 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of tuna, that adds another 35 micrograms. Even if your mercury blood level is within the so-called “normal” range, if you don't excrete mercury efficiently it can build up in your brain, liver, kidney, thyroid and other organs over years of continuous exposure. The effects of prolonged exposure to mercury can be delayed for years, making it difficult to determine the cause of your illness. Diseases such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia affect millions of people around the world. Doctors say the causes of these illnesses are unknown and there is no cure. This book provides cases histories of many diseases which were caused by mercury and subsequently cured using chelation therapy. It also takes you step by step through the process of safely chelating heavy metals from your body.

Book excerpt: For more than a quarter century, Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens has proven to be among the most reliable, easy-to-use and essential reference works on hazardous materials. Sittig's 5th Edition remains the lone comprehensive work providing a vast array of critical information on the 2,100 most heavily used, transported, and regulated chemical substances of both occupational and environmental concern. Information is the most vital resource anyone can have when dealing with potential hazardous substance accidents or acts of terror. Sittig's provides extensive data for each of the 2,100 chemicals in a uniform format, enabling fast and accurate decisions in any situation. The chemicals are presented alphabetically and classified as a carcinogen, hazardous substance, hazardous waste, or toxic pollutant. This new edition contains extensively expanded information in all 28 fields for each chemical (see table of contents) and has been updated to keep pace with world events. Chemicals classified as WMD have been included in the new edition as has more information frequently queried by first responders and frontline industrial safety personnel. *Includes and references European chemical identifiers and regulations. *The only single source reference that provides such in-depth information for each chemical. *The two volume set is designed for fast and accurate decision making in any situation.

Book excerpt: Every wonder why so many modern chronic diseases that were unheard of a century ago seem to have no cure? Mercury is the second most toxic element known. It has been around long before modern humans ever began but its concentration in our environment and food has increased by over a factor of 10 times since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Dr. Bill McGraw describes in amazing detail the whole story of mercury and how it came to be one of the biggest contributors of toxicity in the human body. From when and where it has been mined in the earth to how it became prevalent in so many polluting industries and most importantly, how it gets into our bodies and why it is so very hard to remove. Mercury, The Ultimate Truth and Chronic Disease contains the most complete description of the history of mercury toxicity, including the Minimater disaster from the 1950s to the present day. All major polluting industries are detailed including processes, locations, and current outputs. Chapters on mercury in fish and marine mammals are unprecedented in their scope and range while chapters on the description of pain and inflammation in the human body will leave no questions unanswered. Mercury is responsible for deadly Alzheimer's, debilitating chronic fatigue, ubiquitous cataracts, kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, depression, arthritis, and allergies. The link between all of these ailments and mercury are explained in relation to all the relevant information available providing the ultimate truth about the relationship of this heavy metal to so many problems we now face. The modern forms of chelation, sweat therapy and other techniques for mercury removal from the human body are described in their entirety. This book has 45 graphs, maps, tables and pictures and includes information from over 500 sources from the latest scientific research papers to all of the well-known, modern health books so many readers of this book will recognize. This is the complete story of mercury that no one can afford to miss.

Book excerpt: This document is one in a series prepared by the Committee that form the basis of the recommendations for EELs and CELs for selected chemicals. Since the Committee began recommending EELs and CELs for its military sponsors (U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force), the scope of its recommendations has been expanded in response to a request by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The CELs, in particular, grew out of a Navy request for exposure limits for atmospheric contaminants in submarines. The EELs and CELs have been used as design criteria by the sponsors in considering the suitability of materials for particular missions (as in a submarine or a spacecraft) and in assessing the habitability of particular enclosed environments. They are recommended for narrowly defined occupational groups and are not intended for application in general industrial settings or as exposure limits for the general public.
