Book excerpt: A technique is described for the simultaneous separation and determination of the cyanide complexes of copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, and gold. The separation procedure utilizes the principles of ion-pair chromatography, i.e. the partitioning of ion pairs between a hydrophilic mobile phase and a hydrophobic column surface. The cyanide complexes are detected spectrophotometrically or, after the solution has passed through a suppressor, by conductivity measurement. The method is applied to gold solutions from the carbon-in-pulp process. The precision (relative standard deviation) was found to be better than 0,0201 for all complexes at concentrations of 5 mg/l and better than 0,0138 at concentrations of 10 mg/l.

Book excerpt: Classical analytical chemistry relied to a large extent on the physical separation of the individual elements or radicals prior to their identification and quantitative determination. With the advent of instrumental methods of analysis it became possible in many instances to detect and measure the concentration of elements by physical means without prior separation. Optical emission spectrometry, X-ray-fluorescence spectrometry, polarography, and activation analysis are examples of such techniques. In recent years, much effort has been directed towards 'speciation': the identification of the state of combination of the elements and their complexes as they exist in a sample, followed by quantitative estimation. This is of importance, for example, in the electroplating, electrowinning, water-treatment, and hydrometallurgical fields. Ion chromatography is a technique that can be used with success for some of this work. Chromatography as a method of separating species was first employed in 1906 by the botanist Tswett to separate plant pigments. The early chromatographic columns consisted of inorganic adsorbents such as alumina. Paper pulp was also used, to be followed by synthetic organic ion-exchange materials for chemical chromatographic separations. By the suitable choice of solvents and eluting agents, it has now become possible to separate certain chemical complexes with relative ease. It then remains to find a suitable method for the determination of the eluted species. Spectrophotometric or conductivity measurements are usually employed. The technique has been developed to such an extent that it can be used for small volumes of samples. The procedure has great potential in the South African mining context, not only for the better understanding and control of hydrometallurgical processes, but also for the analysis and monitoring of effluents. Pioneering work has been done at Mintek on the development and application of this technique in South Africa. Already several laboratories serving the mining industry have acquired similar equipment, and ion chromatography is becoming one of the accepted analytical procedures. Work on the determination of complexes other than cyanides is already in progress.
