Book Synopsis The Shapes of Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment by : D.R. Kelley
Download or read book The Shapes of Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment written by D.R. Kelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original idea for a conference on the "shapes of knowledge" dates back over ten years to conversations with the late Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute. What happened to the classifications of the sciences between the time of the medieval Studium and that of the French Encyclopedie is a complex and highly abstract question; but posing it is an effective way of mapping and evaluating long term intellectual changes, especially those arising from the impact of humanist scholarship, the new science of the seventeenth century, and attempts to evaluate, to apply, to reconcile, and to institutionalize these rival and interacting traditions. Yet such patterns and transformations cannot be well understood from the heights of the general history of ideas. Within the ~eneral framework of the organization of knowledge the map must be filled in by particular explorations and soundings, and our project called for a conference that would combine some encyclopedic (as well as interdisciplinary and inter national) breadth with scholarly and technical depth.

Book Synopsis Atmosphere—Ocean Dynamics by : Adrian E. Gill
Download or read book Atmosphere—Ocean Dynamics written by Adrian E. Gill and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics deals with a systematic and unified approach to the dynamics of the ocean and atmosphere. The book reviews the relationship of the ocean-atmosphere and how this system functions. The text explains this system through radiative equilibrium models; the book also considers the greenhouse effect, the effects of convection and of horizontal gradients, and the variability in radiative driving of the earth. Equations in the book show the properties of a material element, mass conservation, the balance of scalar quantity (such as salinity), and the mathematical behavior of the ocean and atmosphere. The book also addresses how the ocean-atmosphere system tends to adjust to equilibrium, both in the absence and presence of driving forces such as gravity. The text also explains the effect of the earth's rotation on the system, as well as the application of forced motions such as that produced by wind or temperature changes. The book explains tropical dynamics and the effects of variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude. The text will be appreciated by meteorologists, environmentalists, students studying hydrology, and people working in general earth sciences.
Book Synopsis Rembrandt and His Critics 1630–1730 by : Seymour Slive

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My greatest debt in the writing of this book is to my teacher Dr. Ulrich Middeldorf, who taught me the methodology of research in art history, and who guided my studies of art theory and criticism. This study, which in an earlier form was accepted as a doctoral dissertation by the University of Chicago, was begun under Dr. Middeldorf's guidance, and during all stages of its preparation I benefited from his invaluable suggestions and criticism. A United States Government Grant enabled me to complete my researches on Rembrandt in the Netherlands, where I studied at the Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht with Dr. J.G. van Gelder, who was particularly generous with his knowledge and time. He read the manuscript and proofs, and offered numerous suggestions and additions which have been of great benefit to me. Special acknowledgement is made to the Kunsthistorisch lnstituut der Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht for generously finding a place for this study in the Utrechtse Bij dragen tot de Kunstgeschiedenis. I am also much indebted to Dr. H. Schulte Nordholt of the Kunsthistorisch lnstituut for his valuable advice and his help inseeing the book through the press.

This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work counters historiographies that search for the origins of modern science within the experimental practices of Europe’s first scientific institutions, such as the Cimento. Book Synopsis Italian Weights and Measures from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century by : Ronald Edward Zupko
Download or read book Italian Weights and Measures from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century written by Ronald Edward Zupko and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1981 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most metrological systems throughout W. Europe, the Italian developed during the Middle Ages (MA) & Early Modern era without any ref. to a commonly accepted set of nat.-ethnic standards. Italy, with its many kingdoms, duchies, communes, etc., was never able to attain any level of metrological standardization outside the confines of severely restricted, small, independent, political jurisdictions. Not until unification in 1871, were Italian weights & measures (W&M) given a totally nat. character. And it was the metric system, & not a conglomerate of units from the old, that finally accomplished the task. This book presents a quantitative compilation, synthesis, & analysis of the principal pre-metric W&M employed throughout Italy & in those areas controlled or influenced by Italy from the Later MA to the age of metrication in the later 19th cent. Tables.
Book Synopsis A Europe of Courts, a Europe of Factions by : Ruben Gonzalez Cuerva
Download or read book A Europe of Courts, a Europe of Factions written by Ruben Gonzalez Cuerva and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Europe of Courts, a Europe of Factions the contributors offer an analysis of the political groups of the most representative European courts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Transcending individual cases, this collection presents the first comparative overview of the phenomenon of court factionalism. Through original research and a critical approach, González Cuerva and Koller explore in depth the emergence, coexistence and image of court factions. This contribution to the debate on the nature of early modern policy-making is enriched with a European-wide focus, which allows comparison of the circumstantial and micropolitical factors accounting for the spread of factions and the conditions in which they functioned. It also allows partisan sources to be examined with the necessary caution. Contributors are Stefano Andretta, Janet Dickinson, Luc Duerloo, Pavel Marek, José Martínez Millán, Toby Osborne, David Potter, Jonathan Spangler, Evrim Türkçelik, and Maria Antonietta Visceglia.
