This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is a way of life for people who are sold out to Jesus Christ. The modern world is making living for Christ an "out of fashion" thing. This book takes a look on how the Christians in Nigeria can positively impact the society by keeping the peace yet keeping the great commission in focus, while impacting the society positively by the provision of social amenities and good moral character at home, school and work. . An attempt is then made to show that Christians must brace up in order to adopt modern techniques that can be relevant in this scientific age and to show that Christian values can contribute positively to the society by minimizing social vices; since morality is inseparable from religion both religion and morals are also inseparable from society. The study combines library research and social survey. Stratified sampling was used to ensure coverage of all the six geo-political zones within Nigeria. Quota sampling was used within the strata. It relied mainly on the information gathered through interview, fieldwork reports, questionnaire and observations.
Book Synopsis Religion and the Making of Nigeria by : Olufemi Vaughan
Download or read book Religion and the Making of Nigeria written by Olufemi Vaughan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religion and the Making of Nigeria, Olufemi Vaughan examines how Christian, Muslim, and indigenous religious structures have provided the essential social and ideological frameworks for the construction of contemporary Nigeria. Using a wealth of archival sources and extensive Africanist scholarship, Vaughan traces Nigeria’s social, religious, and political history from the early nineteenth century to the present. During the nineteenth century, the historic Sokoto Jihad in today’s northern Nigeria and the Christian missionary movement in what is now southwestern Nigeria provided the frameworks for ethno-religious divisions in colonial society. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, Christian-Muslim tensions became manifest in regional and religious conflicts over the expansion of sharia, in fierce competition among political elites for state power, and in the rise of Boko Haram. These tensions are not simply conflicts over religious beliefs, ethnicity, and regionalism; they represent structural imbalances founded on the religious divisions forged under colonial rule.
Book Synopsis From Clash to Dialogue of Religions by : Casimir Chinedu O. Nzeh
Download or read book From Clash to Dialogue of Religions written by Casimir Chinedu O. Nzeh and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 11, 2001 is now etched into the collective world consciousness as a water-shed in the modern history of relationship between the world civilizations. These civilizations are essentially rooted in religious faiths that are largely ignorant of each other and consequently mutually hostile. Hopefully, not too late, the world has woken up to this awesome reality. This work started by the author some years ago before September 11, 2001 is appearing at a most auspicious time, when Nigeria indeed, is like the world-stage in microcosm where the contradictions between faith and praxis in the relationship between these world religions are played out. Using Nigeria as a case-study the author painstakingly analyses the commonly shared areas of faith between Islam and the Christian Faith and carefully scrutinizes the background, motives and characteristics of the friction points between the two religions. The result of his research challenges both religions by exposing how much they have in common to co-exist peacefully and assure humanity that peace is inexorably bound up with religion. It also underscores the Catholic Social Teaching with its principles, values and norms for the foundation of a sound social Order and structure of social life. Contents: Background to Christian-Islamic Tension--Islamic Religion and its Socio-economic and Political Aspirations in Nigeria--Christian Incursion in Nigeria: its Social and Political Implications--Christian-Islamic Tension in Nigeria--The Social Teaching of the Church: Areas of Application--Religious Co-existence in a Pluralistic Nigeria.

Violence in Nigeria is the most comprehensive study of religious violence and aggression in Nigeria, notably its causes, consequences, and the options for conflict resolution. After an analysis of the links between religionand politics, the book elaborates on all the major cases of violence in the 1980s and 90s, including the Maitatsine, Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna, and Katsina riots. Zones of religious tensions are identified, as well as general characteristics of violence in Nigeria; and issues in inter and intra-religious relations, relious organizations, and the states, and the main actors in the conflicts are explored in great detail. A product of extensive primary research, Violence in Nigeria makes a contribution to contemporary social and political history that no previous study has attempted, and it is written to appeal to specialists and non-specialists alike. Book Synopsis Soldiers of God in a Secular World by : Sarah Shortall
Download or read book Soldiers of God in a Secular World written by Sarah Shortall and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory account of the nouvelle thologie, a clerical movement that revitalized the Catholic ChurchÕs role in twentieth-century French political life. Secularism has been a cornerstone of French political culture since 1905, when the republic formalized the separation of church and state. At times the barrier of secularism has seemed impenetrable, stifling religious actors wishing to take part in political life. Yet in other instances, secularism has actually nurtured movements of the faithful. Soldiers of God in a Secular World explores one such case, that of the nouvelle thologie, or new theology. Developed in the interwar years by Jesuits and Dominicans, the nouvelle thologie reimagined the ChurchÕs relationship to public life, encouraging political activism, engaging with secular philosophy, and inspiring doctrinal changes adopted by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. Nouveaux thologiens charted a path between the old alliance of throne and altar and secularismÕs demand for the privatization of religion. Envisioning a Church in but not of the public sphere, Catholic thinkers drew on theological principles to intervene in political questions while claiming to remain at armÕs length from politics proper. Sarah Shortall argues that this Òcounter-politicsÓ was central to the mission of the nouveaux thologiens: by recoding political statements in the ostensibly apolitical language of doctrine, priests were able to enter into debates over fascism and communism, democracy and human rights, colonialism and nuclear war. This approach found its highest expression during the Second World War, when the nouveaux thologiens led the spiritual resistance against Nazism. Claiming a powerful public voice, they collectively forged a new role for the Church amid the momentous political shifts of the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Sacred and Secular by : Pippa Norris
Download or read book Sacred and Secular written by Pippa Norris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a theory of existential security. It demonstrates that the publics of virtually all advanced industrial societies have been moving toward more secular orientations during the past half century, but also that the world as a whole now has more people with traditional religious views than ever before. This second edition expands the theory and provides new and updated evidence from a broad perspective and in a wide range of countries. This confirms that religiosity persists most strongly among vulnerable populations, especially in poorer nations and in failed states. Conversely, a systematic erosion of religious practices, values and beliefs has occurred among the more prosperous strata in rich nations.
