Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Mythology Other avocations have made difficult the due revision of this book in the light of the manifold hierological discussion of the past ten years. Since, however, I have seen no reason to give up any of its main contentions, and the growing interest in the central problem is expressed by the demand for a new edition, I have made Shift to improve and expand it at the many points that had obtruded them selves for fuller consideration in the course of my general reading. And there is the further reason for removing the out-oi-print bar under which the book has lately lain, that, latterly as formerly, its most prominent theological critics are industrious in misrepresenting its positions. In this respect neo-unitarians and Trinitarians seem to be at one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ Myth: A Study Napoleon I., in his conversations with Wie land, expressed his disbelief in the historical existence of Christ; but that declaration seems to have made but little impression upon his hearer, and was, apparently, received without comment by later readers of the statement, Napoleon not being considered an authority in such matters, although his logical faculty and mathematical genius were indisputable. At present this question is vital and impera tive. It lies at the basis of the whole struct ure of Biblical criticism, and the answer lurks between the lines in all the reports of modern investigation. Book Synopsis Egyptian Mythology and Egyptian Christianity by : Samuel Sharpe
Download or read book Egyptian Mythology and Egyptian Christianity written by Samuel Sharpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian Mythology and Egyptian Christianity: With Their Influence on the Opinions of Modern Christendom The study Of error is Often only a little less important than the study of truth. The history of the human mind in its progress from ignorance towards knowledge, Should tell us the mistakes into which it has sometimes wandered, as 'well as its steps in the right path. We turn indeed with more pleasure to review the sources from which the world has gained any Of its valuable truths, in the hope of there finding some further knowledge which may be equally valuable while for our errors, so long as we are unwilling to acknowledge them to be errors, we too Often shut our eyes, and refuse to be shewn their origin. The Emperor Marcus Antoninus, in his philosophical work, mentions the several tutors and friends from whom he gained his good habits, and those views of life which he chiefly valued; but though we must suppose that he was aware Of some failings in his character, he does not tell us to which of his companions he owed them. And so it is with the benefits of civilization, arts, and religion and also with the evils Of superstition. Modern Europe readily acknowledges how many benefits it received from Rome, from Greece, and from J udea, but has been willing to forget how much Of its superstition came from Egypt. Book Synopsis Did Jesus Really Live? by : Herbert J. Rossington
Download or read book Did Jesus Really Live? written by Herbert J. Rossington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Did Jesus Really Live?: A Reply to 'the Christ Myth' The interest in Jesus of Nazareth seems to grow from more to more. Each succeeding age discovers in him some fresh attraction, or re interprets in accordance with its own needs aspects of his life and teaching which appealed to former times. In an age of criticism such as ours it is inevitable that much is called in question which once went unchallenged. Hence it need occasion no surprise if Christianity is asked to give an account of itself. In such a case the task of the Christian apologist is not to denounce but to discuss - to indicate that historical criticism is a means of defence and not a mere instrument of attack. Accord ingly this little book attempts to deal suggestively rather than exhaustively with the important issue raised in recent critical works. It is written in the sincere hope that it may prove helpful to some who believe with the writer that the historic personality of Jesus is fundamental to Christian faith. Download or read book Pagan Christs written by J. M. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pagan Christs: Studies in Comparative Hierology Since the first issue of this work in 1903, but especially within the past few years, its main positions have been brought into extensive discussion by other writers, notably in Germany, where the Christus mythe of Professor Arthur Drews has been the theme of many plat form debates. The hypothesis oi the pre-christian J csus-god, first indicated in Christianity and Mythology, and further propounded in the first edition of this book, has received highly important and independent development at the hands of Professor W. Benjamin Smith in his Der Vorchristliche Jesus and in the later expo sitiou of Professor Drews. For one whose tasks include other busy fields, it is hardly possible to give this the constant attention it deserves; but the present edition has been as fully revised as might be; and some fresh elucidatory material has been embodied, without, however, any pretence of including the results Of the other writers named. Book Synopsis Myth, Magic, and Morals by : Fred Cornwallis Conybeare
Download or read book Myth, Magic, and Morals written by Fred Cornwallis Conybeare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myth, Magic, and Morals: A Study of Christian Origins In reprinting Myth, Magic, and Morals, a few insignificant verbal changes have been made in the text, and such clerical errors corrected as have been noticed by reviewers or detected by myself. Several additions have also been made to the "Notes" at the end of the book. In other respects this second edition is identical with the first. The favourable reception which not only the English Press, but also many foreign and colonial journals, have accorded to my book has afforded me deep satisfaction; for it shows that over wide circles truth is beginning to be more highly esteemed than so-called orthodoxy, and historical research more valued than blind adherence to obsolete tradition. There was a time - I am just old enough to remember it - when a work like my own would have aroused in the venerable circles of Oxford and Cambridge a regular heresy hunt. I have myself seen Dean Burgon and Dean Goulburn pursuing the Revisers of the English New Testament. I have beheld Dr. Pusey and Canon Liddon and the venerable Mr. Foulkes up in arms against the mild heresies of Dr. Jowett, of the authors of Lux Mundi, and of the late Vicar of Carfax. I have heard a Bishop of Salisbury declare from the University pulpit that if Freethinkers were not ill-livers they would never have been Freethinkers. I have known the late Bishop Stubbs reject a candidate for ordination because he could not accept as genuine and literal historical fact the first six chapters of Genesis. Book Synopsis Christian Mythology by : Philippe Walter
Download or read book Christian Mythology written by Philippe Walter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals how Christian mythology has more to do with long-standing pagan traditions than the Bible • Explains how the church fathers knowingly incorporated pagan elements into the Christian faith to ease the transition to the new religion • Identifies pagan deities that were incorporated into each of the saints • Shows how all the major holidays in the Christian calendar are modeled on pagan rituals and myths, including Easter and Christmas In this extensive study of the Christian mythology that animated Europe in the Middle Ages, author Philippe Walter reveals how these stories and the holiday traditions connected with them are based on long-standing pagan rituals and myths and have very little connection to the Bible. The author explains how the church fathers knowingly incorporated pagan elements into the Christian faith to ease the transition to the new religion. Rather than tear down the pagan temples in Britain, Pope Gregory the Great advised Saint Augustine of Canterbury to add the pagan rituals into the mix of Christian practices and transform the pagan temples into churches. Instead of religious conversion, it was simply a matter of convincing the populace to include Jesus in their current religious practices. Providing extensive documentation, Walter shows which major calendar days of the Christian year are founded on pagan rituals and myths, including the high holidays of Easter and Christmas. Examining hagiographic accounts of the saints, he reveals the origin of these symbolic figures in the deities worshipped in pagan Europe for centuries. He also explores how the identities of saints and pagan figures became so intermingled that some saints were transformed into pagan incarnations, such as Mary Magdalene’s conversion into one of the Celtic Ladies of the Lake. In revealing the pagan roots of many Christian figures, stories, and rituals, Walter provides a new understanding of the evolution of religious belief.

Download or read book The Jesus Problem written by J. M. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jesus Problem: A Restatement of the Myth Theory As was explained in the preamble to the historical jesus that work was offered as prolegomena to a concise restatement of the theory that the Gospel Jesus is a mythical construction. That theory had been dis cursively expounded by the writer in two large volumes, christianity and mythology and pagan christs, and summarily in A short history OF christianity, the argument in the two former combining a negative criticism of the New Testament narrative with an exposition of the myth-evidence. Criticism having in large part taken the form of a denial that the records were unhistorical, it was necessary to clear the ground by showing that all the various attempts of the past generation to find in the gospels a historical residuum have entirely failed to meet critical tests. Those attempts, conflicting as they do with each other, and collapsing as they do in themselves, give undesigned support to the conclusion that the gospel story is without historic basis.
