Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Christianity The present volume is written in a style which, it is hoped, will not befound more dim cult than that of the books on history, generally used in the public schools. Presenting the subject from an interdenominational view point, it aims to awaken an interest for the church and'the cause of Christ, and to exert an infin ence in favor of primitive Christian piety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian History in Its Three Great Periods Hese volumes, of which the first was originally published under the title Fragments of Chris tian History, were prepared in the regular course of duty in the department of Ecclesiastical History in Harvard University. Taken together, the two em brace the entire development of Catholic Christianity, coming down to the eve of the Reformation. Their plan requires for its completion a third volume, te viewing certain modern phases of religious life and thought, which is now in preparation. The series thus contains a general view, or outline, of the course of study indicated in the Introduction, which I have attempted to fill out in the University lecture-courses. Taken in connection with Hebrew Men and Times, which serves as preface, and Our Liberal Movement in Theology, which serves as sequel, it gives a simi lar outline of the great religious tradition that has come down to our own time. Observe that we pos tulate mere curiosity and interest in human nature, as a phenomenon, we postulate no sym pathy or interest in religious belief as such. For the Martian as described is a being for whom religion is an impossibility and the Christian ideal a subject for laughter. He would natur ally pass by our churches, ignore our religious books and newspapers, and regard the denuncia tion of the advancing tide of infidelity by Bishops and Archdeacons, as a proof that the terrestrials are only still at the lowest rung of the ladder, scaled already by the inhabitants of Mars. Yet none the less such a being could not be long upon earth, before he would be driven to the conclusion that if he desired to understand the civilization of Europe and America, to enter into the meaning of its poli tics, its literature, its art, and even to appreciate its political geography, there was one subject of which he must strive to make himself a master - the history of Christianity, of the manifold forms which it has assumed, of the strange spell cast by it upon the most practical of the races upon earth, and the still stranger reactions which it has exercised upon politics and culture. Some imagine that the British Isles were visited by one of the Apostles of our Lord. Others, that missionaries went from Gaul. While not a few look upon St. Augustine as the great missionary to the Britons, and suppose that little was done for their conversion before he landed on their shores. On the contrary, as we propose to shoAv, Christianity had a foothold in Britain some 400 years before St. Augustines day and continued to hold its ground imder the same auspices The Roman Catholic Church for more than 900 years after his arrival. In order to give the historic facts their true setting, we have hastily sketched the progress of the Christian Churches from the end of the first century to the beginning of the twentieth. From the time when Revelation ceased and the Bible became a completed book, to the time when it speaks in 456 tongues to the nations of the world in accents that proclaim its Divine origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel History and Its Transmission The ten Lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the spring of this year at the Passmore Edwards Settlement in London as the Jowett Lectures for 1906. I repeated them with very little change for my inaugural course at Cambridge as Norrisian Professor of Divinity, so that it seemed advisable to keep them in lecture form when they came to be printed. It is sometimes supposed that the result of modern historical criticism is to diminish the historical value of the Gospels. My own researches have made me believe that there is a much larger element of genuine history in the Canonical Gospels, than a general view of the tendencies which influenced Christendom during the first century and a half of its existence might have led one to anticipate. To understand the Sacred records completely, and to comprehend the wisdom of the Divine plan, which arranged the time, the place, and the circumstances of the advent of the Author and Finisher of our faith, has never been granted to any human mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 3 The fifteen or sixteen years of religious history comprised in this volume in'the embryonic age of Christianity, are the years with which we are best acquainted. Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. Is rectified, Plate II., p. 160, is set upright, and several other slight improvements are made. The recent discovery at Delphi of an inscription which is said to prove that Gallio was Proconsul of Achaia in a.d. 52, confirms in a very satisfactory way the chronology advocated in the fourteenth paper of this volume (differing only in one or two very slight details from that adopted in St. Paul tile Travel/er). If Gallio was Proconsul in 52, it can hardly be doubted that the eighteen months of Paul's residence in Corinth extended from Autumn 51 to Spring 53. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. On this topic something more is said in the introductory chapter. This change Of plan has involved an entire recasting of the materials to be incorpo rated into this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the History of Evangelical Christianity Mation there was no definition of it put forth; for there was no controversy with Rome about it. The true basis of Christianity has thus been all along contained in the history of the Church. The scope of the history has been the display of the reception, by the world, of the announcement of the Divine redemption offered in the Gospel, to a race disordered by sin. To state the evidence as to this - to show that the many voices of Christendom utter a response to one and the same truth - is the aim of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the New Age While I could covet for this book a wide welcome, an interdenominational welcome, from both the ministry and the laity, in its preparation I have had not less in mind the lay than the ministerial reader. I have been led, sanely and constructively I hope, to discuss many phases of modem fact and thought, and in my various processes I think it could be only helpful if a large constituency of thinking laymen were to keep me company. I do not for a moment assume that all such readers would give consent to all the positions of the book, but it is my confidence that all would receive some benefit; and it might not be of least value that the attention of readers should be newly challenged at the very points, if any, which seem to awaken dissent. The theme of this volume is - the Church? Yes; but something far other and more. The central thought around which the entire discussion revolves is - the world-kingdom of Jesus Christ. I have elected for the title of the book, as covering perhaps its conception more perfectly than any other phrasing, this - Christianity and the New Age. This title is exceedingly broad - indeed, "broader than the measure of man's mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
