Book Synopsis Conflict and Cooperation by : Peter E. Makari
Download or read book Conflict and Cooperation written by Peter E. Makari and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt is considered the intellectual birthplace of the modern Islamic movements, and is a center of Islamic thought and culture. It is also home to one of the oldest Christian populations in the world. While conflict between these two communities is often the focus of media attention in the region, important efforts to advocate for and support positive inter-communal relations are finding a degree of success. In this book, Peter Makari considers the role of governmental and non-governmental actors in conflict resolution and the promotion of positive Christian-Muslim relations in Egypt. He maintains that, prevailing opinions notwithstanding, the last quarter-century has witnessed a high level of inter-religious cooperation and tolerance. Relying heavily on Arabic sources, Makari examines the rhetoric and actions of official governmental and religious institutions. Combining empirical research with an informed theoretical perspective, this work offers a perspective seldom available to the English reader on questions of tolerance, citizenship, and civil society in this part of the Arab world.

Book Synopsis Don't Fire Your Church Members by : Jonathan Leeman
Download or read book Don't Fire Your Church Members written by Jonathan Leeman and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church membership is not just a status, it’s an office. Leaders shouldn’t fire members from the responsibilities given to them by Jesus—they should train them! When members are trained, the church grows in holiness and love, discipleship and mission. Complacency and nominalism are diminished. Jesus gives every church member an office in the church’s government: to assume final responsibility for guarding the what and the who of the gospel in the church and its ministry. Similarly, Jesus gives leaders to the church for equipping the members to do this church-building and mission-accomplishing work. In our day, the tasks of reinvigorating congregational authority and elder authority must work together. The vision of congregationalism pictured in this book offers an integrated view of the Christian life. Congregationalism is biblical, but biblical congregationalism just might look a little different than you expect. It is nothing less than Jesus’ authorization for living out his kingdom rule among a people on mission.

Book Synopsis Pentecostalism and Christian Unity by : Wolfgang Vondey
Download or read book Pentecostalism and Christian Unity written by Wolfgang Vondey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of ecumenical documents, key texts, and critical essays is the first collection of its kind exclusively dedicated to Pentecostalism and its contributions to Christian unity. In the first part, a cadre of internationally renowned scholars addresses the ecumenical heritage and perspectives of the Pentecostal movement since the early twentieth century. Part 2 offers a collection of final reports from international dialogues with Pentecostal participation. The final part contains programmatic essays in response to The Nature and Mission of the Church, a major study on the doctrine of the church published by the World Council of Churches. Most of these essays were first presented by the ecumenical-studies group of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, currently the only organized ecumenical think tank among Pentecostals in North America. Since its formation in 2001, the group has encouraged Pentecostal participation in ecumenical concerns, has hosted Roman Catholic-Pentecostal conversations at the annual meeting of the Society, has invited international scholarly debates on ecumenical matters, and has engaged in the study of ecumenical consensus statements. The essays and documents in this collection model the dedication and commitment among Pentecostals today that engage the challenges and opportunities of Christian unity from the perspective of a tradition that has often been falsely accused of being anti-ecumenical. This collection presents an invaluable resource for teachers, scholars, and pastors interested in engaging the global Christian arena from the worldwide and ecumenical image of Pentecostalism.
