Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Letters to the Reverend Moses Stuart: On the Subject of Religious Liberty Reverend Sir, In your Letter on Religious Liberty, you accuse Dr. Channing of publishing certain charges against orthodox Christians. You quote several passages from his writings to substantiate your accusation. You then bring together the substance of his charges in the following sentences. "You have charged the orthodox with a settled, steadfast, unrelenting purpose to suppress all free inquiry respecting matters of religion, to cover with reproach those who may differ from themselves, to drown the free expression of opinion by denunciations of heresy, and to strike terror into the multitude by joint and perpetual menace. In addition to all this, you represent them as saying; - Since argument is insufficient to produce uniformity of opinion, recourse must be had to more powerful instruments of conviction, to Ecclesiastical Courts." Having given this summary, you utter the following positive and solemn declarations. "I do know that the accusations which you stand pledged to support are not true. I aver that they are not, before heaven and earth." Now, my dear Sir, permit me also to express my honest convictions on this question. For I presume you will admit, that I have an equal right with yourself, to publish Letters on Religious Liberty; and an equal right, with any orthodox Christian, to utter solemn asseverations. I therefore aver, before heaven and earth, that I firmly believe the above charges to be substantially correct, when applied to the leaders of the orthodox denomination in our country, against whom they were specially directed. And to give you and the public the honest reasons for this belief, is the design and object of the present publication. I address you as the head of the orthodox party, because you seem to me to have assumed that character in your Letter to Dr. Channing. These are your own words. "All, against whom I suppose the denunciations in your works are specially directed, I have the pleasure of being more or less acquainted with; and I know well their feelings and views." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion Around Emily Dickinson begins with a seeming paradox posed by Dickinson’s posthumously published works: while her poems and letters contain many explicitly religious themes and concepts, throughout her life she resisted joining her local church and rarely attended services. Prompted by this paradox, W. Clark Gilpin proposes, first, that understanding the religious aspect of the surrounding culture enhances our appreciation of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and, second, that her poetry casts light on features of religion in nineteenth-century America that might otherwise escape our attention. Religion, especially Protestant Christianity, was “around” Emily Dickinson not only in explicitly religious practices, literature, architecture, and ideas but also as an embedded influence on normative patterns of social organization in the era, including gender roles, education, and ideals of personal intimacy and fulfillment. Through her poetry, Dickinson imaginatively reshaped this richly textured religious inheritance to create her own personal perspective on what it might mean to be religious in the nineteenth century. The artistry of her poetry and the profundity of her thought have meant that this personal perspective proved to be far more than “merely” personal. Instead, Dickinson’s creative engagement with the religion around her has stimulated and challenged successive generations of readers in the United States and around the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Christian Holiness This little volume is the result of numerous conversations on the subject of Christian holiness, or the holiness which the Methodist Church has always held to be attainable through the blood of Christ, and the agency of the Holy Spirit; and not only attainable, but the privilege of all Christians. The aim in writing these letters was to meet objections and inquiries, which the writer found to arise in the minds of those, especially young persons, with whom she conversed. These she found to be various: difficulties were raised, by the great adversary varying according to the mental constitution, or circumstances of the person; and often, when one was surmounted, another was raised in the same mind, so that some persons have had nearly all the temptations, here referred to, to contend with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kernel and the Husk: Letters on Spiritual Christianity The time is not perhaps far distant when few will believe in miracles who do not also believe in an infallible Church; and then, such books as the present will appeal to a larger circle. But, as things are, the author would beg all those who worship a miraculous Christ without doubt and difficulty to pause here and read no further. The book is not intended for them; it is intended for those alone to whom it is dedicated, "the doubters of this generation." For there are some who feel drawn towards the worship of Christ by love and reverence, yet repelled by an apparently inextricable connection of the story of Christ with a miraculous element which, in their minds, throws a doubt over the whole of His acts, His doctrine, His character, and even His existence. Others, who worship Christ, worship Him insecurely and tremulously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progress of a Soul: Or Letters of a Convert Many such collections have already appeared, it is true, but there is a freshness about these letters which will appeal to the reader, and they have the advantage of being written from a slightly different point of view from that of the majority. We are inundated with appeals to the High Church Anglican, but here we have letters addressed to the Agnostic man of science and to the Nonconformist Celt. It is, of course, quite impossible to meet every objection, every difficulty, in the brief space of a letter or even a series of letters. The main object of a writer is to make his correspondent think, and here, it seems to me, Miss Dunbar has been unusually successful. Her letters, if slight in form, are full of ideas, and of ideas subtly expressed. Her fervour is restrained, though it pervades the whole series of letters, and never degenerates into gush. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend, on the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties, of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2 Christianity, it is true, is distinguishable from all other systems by the purity, excellency, and extent of the morality it enforces; yet this is not, I conceive, its most prominent characteristic. It no where pre sents us with a connected scheme of ethics, but it does far better in advancing the most simple precepts rela tive to every part of moral duty, and accompanying them with the most powerful incentives to upright and holy conduct. Its grand peculiarity consists in as suming the fact that man is in a fallen state, that he has lost the image of God, that he is of himself inca puble of regaining the favour of his Creator, and in providing a remedy by which man may be cured of his moral disorder; this remedy being no less than the gift of the Son of God who, in relation to mankind, is not so frequently called their pattern, as the Physician of Souls, the great Deliverer, the Saviour of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sectarian School-Books: A Series of Letters The letters reprinted in this pamphlet originally appeared in the Dedham Standard, beginning in the issue of that paper dated Nov. 24, 1888, and closing in its issue of April 13, 1889. It was not my intention to republish them in this form when they were written, and I only do so at the solicitation of friends who are desirous that the whole correspondence shall be submitted to the general public. They were writ ten hurriedly, and as usual haste made waste, so that the reader will find in them some repetitions and digressions, besides other imperfections that have necessarily attended so long and desultory a correspondence. In these apologetic words I speak, of course, only for my own contributions. With only a few corrections of obvious slips of the pen, or errors of the types, I have reprinted them as they appeared in the columns of the Standard. I have also added a number of foot-notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Papers: By the Late Theodosia A. Viscountess Powerscourt In offering the following Volume to the public, it is, perhaps, necessary that I should prefix a few words, to state what the reader is to expect, and what he is not to expect, in these Letters and Papers. He is not to expect any thing in the character of religious gossip; any anecdotes of, or remarks concerning, living persons, with whom the writer had intercourse. Those who had the privilege of receiving Letters from the late Lady Powerscourt, know well that she delighted to dwell on much higher subjects than the actions, or opinions, of her fellow-men. If every thing she ever wrote was submitted to the public eye, it would be, perhaps, a subject of surprise to some, how very little was said about other persons in her extended correspondence. But, in the following selections, I have studiously omitted every thing in the least degree personal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
