Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Reconstruction in the South The author misses in his book that deliberately lauda tory mood which, by the recent usage of high authority, seems to be the proper way for the Northerner to discuss the South. Beginning with the Ogden parties, a succes sion of distinguished Yankees have journeyed thither on all manner of speech-making occasions. There is so much compelling praise in that marvelously awakening section that these gentlemen have had little difficulty in filling the time allotted by program maker and interviewer with merited congratulations. The echoes of their speeches as reported back home have largely given tone to latter-day Northern thought on Southern problems. But one cannot easily be at the same time both guest and philosopher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Christian Church in the South In September 1971 I met with the Committee by request and agreed to collaborate with the secretary in writing the book. Scott and I were old friends and worked 1n perfect harmony so that I Was able to complete most of the research and begin the manuscript by Feb ruary 1972. The initial draft of the first five chapters had been written when Scott died on July 17 of that year. The Completion of this history was the cherished dream of my, colleague whose last words to me were, This story must be written: Carry'on! And in obedience to that charge I have completed the book. The purpose of this history has not been to glorify the southern Christian Church or any individual or group of individuals among its clergy and membership. Credit has been g1ven where credit was due, but no attempt has been made to belittle Or ignore errors or defects; and, the Church being an institution composed of human beings there were naturally some of both. The main purpose has been to show what the Christians accomplished and to picture the laborious process necessary to attain their goals. The activities of this Church touched the political, social, and intellectual life, in addition to religious affairs in the geographical area where it existed, and only the highlights of each could be included in this account. Individual ministers, local churches, and area conferences could only be mentioned for the part they played in the overall story. Each church and conference has a history of its own and many individuals merit a full biography, but these are subjects for separate treatment apart from this account. Scott and I were in full agreement that this history should strictly conform to the known facts, and to accomplish this aim every possible means was exerted to uncover all data in existence pertinent to the subject. I accept full responsibility for any proven errors in the account. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints and Festivals of the Christian Church A considerable part of the matter presented in the following pages was printed a series of articles in the Union and Advertiser of Rochester, N. Y. The absolute truthfulness of these articles from both archeological and historic standpoints as well as their entire freedom from all denominational bias, with the knowledge of profane and ecclesiastical history and canon law shown in them, at once attracted a wide circle of readers and won the hearty approval of the clergy and laity of both the Protestant and Roman branches of the Christian Church. On their completion, at the request of many eminent divines, the author has carefully revised the entire work, adding to the original MSS. much valuable material, and he has thus produced what is practically a Church Year Book in which is told the origin, history and present status of each of the chief festivals of the entire Christian Church as well as of a number of local feasts and festivals which obtain in certain parts of Europe. While it is beyond the scope of the present work to attempt to tell the story of every one of the numerous canonized saints whom the Church has chosen to honour, the author has each day throughout the year selected a few of the most noted among them and made brief sketches of the lives of those who are remembered on that day. But in the Alphabetical Index are given the name and *' saint-day" of a far more comprehensive list; while in the general index will be found the names of those especially mentioned. As the largest number of the feasts, fasts, and festivals of the Church occur on dates dependant upon the date of Easter, these are spoken of at approximate dates to be found in the general index; while others, like Christmas, whose dates are fixed are treated of on their proper days. In conclusion we may say that this book is the only one published-except those huge tomes extending into from twelve to twenty volumes-wherein may be found such complete and tersely told hagiology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised Glory of the Church of Christ Acknowledged evils abound on all sides; the world is groaning under them; while increasing dangers thicken all around us. Those who do not with careless indifference disregard everything but present pleasures and present profit, all those who really seek permanent good for all men, cannot but desire to have a sure guide to that good. There is one society in the world, and but one, which already possesses that good, and has divine security for its enduring and everlasting glory; and that society is the true Church Of Christ. The object of this treatise is to induce the reader to join truly and fully this blessed com. Pany, and to partake of their present security and their everlasting blessedness the sure guide is nothing less than God's own word, and the promised aid of his own Spirit given to them that ask. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Black Reconstruction in America tells and interprets the story of the twenty years of Reconstruction from the point of view of newly liberated African Americans. Though lambasted by critics at the time of its publication in 1935, Black Reconstruction has only grown in historical and literary importance. In the 1960s it joined the canon of the most influential revisionist historical works. Its greatest achievement is weaving a credible, lyrical historical narrative of the hostile and politically fraught years of 1860-1880 with a powerful critical analysis of the harmful effects of democracy, including Jim Crow laws and other injustices. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by David Levering Lewis, this edition is essential for anyone interested in African American history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Race and Religion: Hellenistic Theology: Its Place in Christian Thought Dear Mr. Allin, I have read with the greatest interest the proof sheets of your work on Hellenism which you kindly sent me. Many convinced members of the Church of England are unaware of the existence, from the earliest times, of a type of Christianity which conceives of God as the Responsible Parent-source, immanent in the Universe; and which regards the Incarnation not as an expedient to remedy a marred plan, but as the climax of an eternal purpose "before the foundation of the world."
