Book Synopsis Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria by : Thaddeus Byimui Umaru
Download or read book Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria written by Thaddeus Byimui Umaru and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion as a powerful impulse in human existence plays a paradoxical role in society as it both contributes significantly in shaping the spiritual, socio-political and economic lives of millions of people and also acts as a source of conflict. The sad experience of interreligious conflict in Northern Nigeria challenges the claim of Islam and Christianity to be religions of peace. However, understood as closely intertwined with culture and custom of a people, religion can be central in the establishment of peace and conflict resolution in and between communities. This text using the model of dialogue (Nostra Aetate) explores and presents the socio-political and theological resources available in Northern Nigeria (the locality) for a consistent peace building process.

Book Synopsis Violence in God's Name by : A. Christian Van Gorder
Download or read book Violence in God's Name written by A. Christian Van Gorder and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, Nigeria's Muslim and Christian relations have been marked by both amicable and violent encounters. More than 100,000 individuals have perished in increasingly volatile and frequent interreligious riots. Are these bloody atrocities primarily the result of economic or political factors - as government officials insist - or are they rooted in the unique expressions of these two religions? Violence in God's Name explores the reasons for and ramifications of Nigeria's multi-faith violence and how these stress fractures might be effectively addressed. Dr. van Gorder does not hide behind theological assertions or ask Christians and Muslims to compromise their faith or evangelistic convictions. He provides an analytical evaluation of past and present tensions between Nigeria's Muslims and Christians. The book culminates into practical directions for realizable multi-faith partnerships for social justice. "Violence in God's Name benefits both from its deep historical perspective, and from the author's thorough knowledge of the situation. This is a rich and well-informed account, which tells us much about the current state of both Christianity and Islam. " Philip Jenkins, Pennsylvania State University "Van Gorder has done an excellent job in ... putting the current spate of violence in Nigeria in a nuanced historical context..." David T. Ngong, PhD, Stillman College "Violence in God's Name provides a balanced perspective that is urgently needed at a point when Nigeria's huge potential for African leadership is threatened by unresolved religious conflict. In this book Dr. van Gorder gives us the background, the current situation and points to possible solutions." Dr. Gary Maxey, President West African Theological Seminary "A. Christian van Gorder's insightful perspectives ... offers a concrete pathway forward for genuine multi-faith dialogue that holds both Muslims and Christians accountable. It is a must read for religious and political leaders of all persuasions in Nigeria." Reverend Father Anthony Odiong, Director St. Peter's Catholic Center, Baylor University Dr. A. Christian van Gorder is Assistant Professor of World Religion at Baylor University. Dr. van Gorder has travelled for several decades throughout Africa and around the world intent upon learning more about Muslim and Christian interactions. He is the author of seven books on multicultural and multifaith dynamics. www.adponline.info

This book was released on 2014 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the place and nature of dialogue and engagement in conflictual interfaith relations through a multilayered study of political Islams impact on Christian-Muslim relations within the Nigerian sociopolitical and cultural context. By examining a contemporary phenomenon that is predicated on historical processes key issues and factors that undergird the religio-political fusion in Islam are clarified showing that this phenomenon is not unique to the Muslim religion but is common within those contemporary societies that have emerged or are emerging from primal or traditional societies. The time period studied includes the arrival of Islam and Christianity to those regions that now constitute Nigeria, particularly the northern region; the sacking of the Fulani Empire of Uthman dan Fodio by British colonial forces; the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates; the formation and subsequent colonization of Nigeria by the British Empire; independent Nigeria and the eventual adoption of Sharia by the governors of the predominantly Muslim geopolitical states of Northern Nigeria to the emergence of radical Islamic groups like Boko Haram. I employ two major research strategies 1) semi-structure d interviews and 2) the grounded theory approach of data analysis. Data have been collected via hist oriographical study, library research, and interviews. The view that the religio-political fusion in Islam and the missional nature of both Christianity and Islam necessitates a degree of particularism or universalism in the process of interfaith dialogue is challenged . The anthropological approach to interfaith engagement developed here suggests a departure from the universality or uniqueness of any religion and focuses rather on the cultural traditions from which religious traditions, in this instance Christianity and Islam, derive their meaning, and in which they play their roles hence, allowing one engage other religions, particularly in religiously pluralistic societies, in a context specific and culturally sensitive manner.

Book Synopsis Muslim and Christian Women in Dialogue by : Kathleen McGarvey
Download or read book Muslim and Christian Women in Dialogue written by Kathleen McGarvey and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations about dialogue and about the theology of religions are common enough these days, but they are rarely grounded in the analysis of a particular reality and are therefore of little help to practitioners. This book, on the other hand, gives an exhaustive documentation of the background and the actual situation of Muslim-Christian relations in Northern Nigeria before proceeding to proposals for understanding the contribution of women's discourse in the development of dialogue and to a feminist theology of religions. Drawing from her empirical findings in Northern Nigeria as well as some feminist insights, the author suggests an approach to other religions, grounded in people's lived experience and a shared commitment to justice, peace and transformed human relations. Recognizing the limitations of some pluralist theories, she suggests a feminist-ethical approach to religious pluralism. The practicality and feasibility of such an approach are shown as she elaborates on its possible application in the concrete context of Northern Nigeria.
