Book excerpt: Religion as a powerful impulse in human existence plays a paradoxical role in society as it both contributes significantly in shaping the spiritual, socio-political and economic lives of millions of people and also acts as a source of conflict. The sad experience of interreligious conflict in Northern Nigeria challenges the claim of Islam and Christianity to be religions of peace. However, understood as closely intertwined with culture and custom of a people, religion can be central in the establishment of peace and conflict resolution in and between communities. This text using the model of dialogue (Nostra Aetate) explores and presents the socio-political and theological resources available in Northern Nigeria (the locality) for a consistent peace building process.

Book excerpt: Observations about dialogue and about the theology of religions are common enough these days, but they are rarely grounded in the analysis of a particular reality and are therefore of little help to practitioners. This book, on the other hand, gives an exhaustive documentation of the background and the actual situation of Muslim-Christian relations in Northern Nigeria before proceeding to proposals for understanding the contribution of women's discourse in the development of dialogue and to a feminist theology of religions. Drawing from her empirical findings in Northern Nigeria as well as some feminist insights, the author suggests an approach to other religions, grounded in people's lived experience and a shared commitment to justice, peace and transformed human relations. Recognizing the limitations of some pluralist theories, she suggests a feminist-ethical approach to religious pluralism. The practicality and feasibility of such an approach are shown as she elaborates on its possible application in the concrete context of Northern Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 11, 2001 is now etched into the collective world consciousness as a water-shed in the modern history of relationship between the world civilizations. These civilizations are essentially rooted in religious faiths that are largely ignorant of each other and consequently mutually hostile. Hopefully, not too late, the world has woken up to this awesome reality. This work started by the author some years ago before September 11, 2001 is appearing at a most auspicious time, when Nigeria indeed, is like the world-stage in microcosm where the contradictions between faith and praxis in the relationship between these world religions are played out. Using Nigeria as a case-study the author painstakingly analyses the commonly shared areas of faith between Islam and the Christian Faith and carefully scrutinizes the background, motives and characteristics of the friction points between the two religions. The result of his research challenges both religions by exposing how much they have in common to co-exist peacefully and assure humanity that peace is inexorably bound up with religion. It also underscores the Catholic Social Teaching with its principles, values and norms for the foundation of a sound social Order and structure of social life. Contents: Background to Christian-Islamic Tension--Islamic Religion and its Socio-economic and Political Aspirations in Nigeria--Christian Incursion in Nigeria: its Social and Political Implications--Christian-Islamic Tension in Nigeria--The Social Teaching of the Church: Areas of Application--Religious Co-existence in a Pluralistic Nigeria.

Book excerpt: This book is an intercultural study of Christian-Muslim relationship in Nigeria, spanning the pre-and post-Independence eras.It seeks, against the backdrop of the persistent crisis and conflicts; to explore avenues for dialogue and harmonious interaction between adherents of the two most patronized (albeit non-indigenous) religions in Nigeria - Christianity and Islam. The author examines the historical backgrounds of the country's ethnographic and sociopolitical configuration, the origin, nature, and impact of each religion, the positive as well as negative dimensions of the relations between Muslims and Christians under various epochs of Nigeria's political life. The book concludes with theological overview and prescriptive advocacy on the pathway to inter-religious peace and harmony in Nigeria.

This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church is the Sacrament of Communion with God and unity among all men (Cf. Vatican II doc. L.G. 1). Christ prayed for this unity amongst his adherents in accordance with the unity between him and God the Father (Cf. Jn. 17: 21). This unity will be a sign by which the outside world is to believe in him, hence calling on the Church to rise up to this demand. Efforts were made by the Church to respond to this demand, but it was at the Second Vatican Council that the search for unity became an imperative. With this Council, the Church acknowledged the possibility of Salvation for the members of other Christian traditions and people of other religions. The Church has done a lot to promote this unity, through the teachings of the Magisterium and the activities of the recent Popes. It is then important to study the situation of Nigeria, where this call of the Vatican II, has received scant response both in ecumenical and interreligious relations. Having done pastoral work in places with interdenominational and interreligious rivalry in Nigeria, I became concerned and worried. The present religious crises in Nigeria, has escalated to an issue of grave concern with the Boko Haram insurgency. My motivation is to demonstrate the teaching of the Church regarding interdenominational and interreligious dialogue within Nigeria. There has been no sustained effort to build bridges of religious unity in the country. This research will demonstrate the necessity of ecumenical dialogue as a prelude to interreligious dialogue in Nigeria. On the global level, the need for various religions to foster relationships has become an imperative. Two important bodies CAN and NIREC, will be studied in this book. The work aims at demonstrating the involvement of the Nigerian Christians and Muslims in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Essentially concerned with the Catholic view of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue & its application to the Nigerian situation. No in-depth study of the religions involved. It is rather the fact of their existence & the role dialogue will play with them to solve religious problems in Nigeria. Though ATR was considered in this work, but the issue of dialogue will only involve Nigerian Muslims & Christians. The research wishes to provoke further study on dialogue between ATR and any of the other two religions. Two issues involved: the reality & importance of the Catholic teachings on ecumenical & interreligious dialogue, and their application to the Nigerian situation. Key methods involved in this work are literary research and analysis, through theological, historical, critical, descriptive, analytical & expository approaches.
