Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions in China It would be of great interest to study China as an inter preter of the two extinct civilizations.2 Other inquiries, however, press for an answer: What has preserved this nation through the centuries? Thoughtful men agree that she can no longer endure as she is. What changes must she undergo to make her possible to the present world? The answer to both questions seems to be the same. China has faced the past. She has worshiped the ancestors. This mental attitude, forbidding all change, has saved the nation from division, but now while she holds this attitude, modern civilization has no power over her. A change in national characteristics is prerequisite to her progress, even before foreign telegraphs and ma chinery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From China WE have just reached the close of the first hundred years of Protestant missions in China, and I wish to call attention to the contrast between the present and the past. If we compare the state of things to-day with the state of things existing in China in Dr. Morrison's day, we shall be able to some extent to realise how great is the work which has been wrought of God during this period in that great empire. We may also notice that the progress of Christian missions in China is but typical of the advance that has been made throughout the world in the same period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross and the Dragon or the Fortunes of Christianity in China: With Notices of the Christian Missions and Missionaries, and Some Account of the Chinese Secret Societies The subject treated In the following pages resolves itself into five distinct heads. Under the first, notice is taken of the legends of the introduction of Christianity into China by the Apostle Thomas and his disciples. Under the second head, some space is devoted to the history of the Nestorian Christians in China, in the seventh century, with their leader, Olo-puen, the first apostle. The third head comprises the missions of the Dominicans and Franciscans in the fourteenth century; the chief actor being John of Monte Corvin, the second Chinese Apostle. This mission was speedily extinguished, and no farther attempts were made to introduce a knowledge of Christianity into China until the sixteenth century, when the Jesuit mission was founded by the celebrated Matteo Ricci. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mission in China This book is written chiefly for those who, through many years, have loyally lent their support to the work recorded in the following pages, and whose right it is to know more fully that their faith has been met with faithfulness. It was commenced eighteen months ago in response to repeated requests, and with numerous and prolonged periods of interruption, its compilation has occupied the spare moments of that length of time. Herein are recounted some of the experiences met with, and methods followed during nearly a quarter of a century's work amongst the Chinese, a work that has been rewarded by nearly ten thousand conversions, and an increasing confidence in the universal advent of the Kingdom of God. Its principal object is to depict our own Mission, as typical of many others. In addition five chapters will be found at the end, giving in brief an account of the Chinese religions, religions 36 involved and mutually intermingled that close investigation and considerable reading have been necessary to anything like a clear and succinct delineation. The whole closes with a short history of Christianity in China. It is the misfortune of a book of this character that great demands are made on the first personal pronoun. If the reader finds that letter too oft repeated, his sympathy is craved in consideration of the number of times it has been suppressed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chinese Appeal to Christendom: Concerning Christian Missions But it is not my intention in these pages to discuss the question of whether there be indeed some natural law that has set Up an impenetrable barrier between East and West. I wish only to draw attention to one sphere of Western activity that denotes an attitude of mind which we Chinese often discuss among ourselves, and which none of us have ever been able fully to under stand or to explain. I refer to the work of the Christian missions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Starting with the religious background of China, Latourette probes why Christianity appealed to the Chinese and then launches into a detailed history of its development. He considers how Christianity began before and coped under the Mongol Dynasty and then the incursion of the Roman Catholic Missions. Briefly considering the Russian Orthodox interest in Chinese missions, he moves on to what is clearly his main concern in the Protestant influx in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Considering the main events of China's history in relation to the European powers of the day, he considers how Christianity fared into the early nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mission Cemetery and the Fallen Missionaries of Fun Chau, China The following collection of missionary memorials, now presented to the Christian public, has been prepared at the suggestion of many friends, not only of those who personally knew and loved the precious men and women whose lives are here portrayed, but also of those who love the cause in which they fell, and who believe that the interests of vital godliness and of the cause of missions would be promoted by its publication. The lives of good men are the property of the Church; and the record of their virtues, their graces, their toils, and their self-denials, with the example of their triumph in the hour of death, constitutes the richest legacy they can leave to the Christian public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions in China The following pages were brought to a close in 1896, and are now printed with no expectation that they will fully explain the existing conditions in China. A great war has recently made serious changes in the political situation, and the final effect on missionary work cannot yet be determined. But, on the other hand, the history of missions down to the last decade of the Nineteenth Century, is a part of the permanent history of China, and to this these few chapters are offered as a slight contribution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Our Missionaries in China Since the days when those early apostolic heralds of the glad tidings brought home to the churches of Antioch and Jerusalem the reports of their conquests among the heathen, the mission story has never failed to enrich the spiritual life of the church, and to inspire God's children to respond to His call for workers. Missionary information is necessary to missionary inspiration. Our young pe0p1e, to whom the calls from the regions beyond come with special force to day, need.to lift up their eyes and look on the fields White already to harvest. They need to study the great mission fields of the world, and to know how God is using persons like themselves to bring the message of His grace into the lives of those who sit in darkness. God has wonderfully blessed the heralds of the ad vent message in China since they entered that great country, only a few years ago. This book is not an attempt to tell the story of this work. It is merely a series of typical pen sketches, which will give the reader a concrete idea of our missionaries at work. We shall see their surroundings, understand their methods, appreciate their perils, and enter into their joy of seeing souls turned from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God. That the first issue was appreciated was evidenced by numerous commendatory letters, and by the exhaustion of the edition long before the Year Book for 1911 went to press. Again our thanks are due to all who have united to produce the volume. Owing to the lamented illness of several friends, the papers promised by them for 1911 were not forthcoming. At the time of printing, however, it was found that there was not space enough to include all the chapters which had been received and so the following had to be omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in China, Tartary and Thibet, Vol. 3 The preachers of the gospel in China were perfectly in the right when they left the various competitors for the Imperial power to settle the dispute among them selves, and they would have been still more praise worthy if they had, during that period, maintained a Spirit of peace and harmony in their own missions, if they had not thrown themselves with quite so much eagerness into controversies, which might be unavoid able, but which it was at all events desirable to carry on with more calmness, gentleness, and Christian simplicity of heart. We have already said, that from the very commence ment of the missions of the Society of Jesus in China, there had arisen among them differences of Opinion, in which had originated two schools -that Of Father Ricci, who was disposed to allow the widest toleration to the rites Of the Chinese; and that of Father Longobardi, who saw nothing but superstition in the worship paid by them to Heaven, to Confucius, and their ancestors; and was therefore disposed to the rigorous interdic tion of all such ceremonies. AS early as 1628, the most experienced missionaries had met to endeavour to come to an understanding on this difficult and important question; but. Though the conference lasted a whole month, no reconciliation of the differences was effected. This deplorable division became known, not only throughout China, but even in Europe, and awakened the attention and inflamed the zeal of other religious orders in the cause of the propagation of the faith. Their arrival in the Celestial Empire, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on Missionary Enterprise, Especially in China The following Remarks took their rise in 'a survey of the Christian Missions of the present century. The writer has, in common with many, that feeling of admitted shortcoming - almost failure - that results from' such a review but he is equally impressed with the belief that all this is remediable. These Remarks are so-called properly. They profess to be neither formal, exhaustive, nor even original, much less exclusive of what might seem, casually viewed, to be incompatible with them. Further they are almost a mere republication of what could appear in the columns of a newspaper, there being insufficient leisure to give them in their entirety they' therefore Want the proportion and kind of treatment to be looked for in a regular treatise. A fairly extensive substratum of experience and ao quaintance with missions is supposed in the reader. Nothing here is intended for those who are without experience nor for those who fear or decline to accept its lessons.
