Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Apology, Vol. 2 of 3 The present volume deals mainly with the vital problems that have been raised in recent years by the sciences of Biblical Criticism and Comparative History of Religions. The author's method of treatment will, we trust, commend itself to every one who is alive to the prominent part played by the latter science in relation to the former. The tendency of modern Biblical Criticism is extremely Rationalistic. It aims at undermining the whole economy of supernatural revelation, by destroying the historical and authentic character of Holy Scripture, and chiefly of the Old Testament. With such results we Catholics are, of course, deeply concerned; but Protestants, by their very position, are concerned far more deeply. The Protestant rule of faith is itself in jeopardy. And Protestants, here in England at any rate, have not been slow to recognize this fact. They were the first to observe the rising dust of the hostile advance, and they set about preparing what purport to be plans of defence, but which we feel bound to consider as terms of surrender. Among other efforts in this direction, we refer especially to three. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Apologetics of the Second Century: In Their Relation to Modern Thought The delay in the publication of this little work needs apology; it is due to the illness of the author, and his return to a bookless land. I wish to express my thanks to the Rev. Canon J. R. Wilford, B.D., of College House, Christchurch, without whose help it would have been, hard to overcome the latter difficulty ; also to the Rev. H. C. Money, of Christ Church, Glasgow, who has kindly consented to read the proofs; also to the Rev. J. O. F. Murray, D.D., Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and to the Rev. Professor V. II. Stanton, D.D., Regius Professor of Divinity, for kindly and practical sympathy. The book itself docs not in any sense claim to be a learned book; it is only the product of elementary theological training combined with a sympathetic reading of the literature of the period-which is not large. The title, "Apologetics" rather than "Apologists," left it open to treat the subject in a general manner: and it has only been possible to make a few scattered remarks on what is a vast field of knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason Revelation: An Essay in Christian Apology As I have summarized this essay at its conclusion, I need not anticipate its purport in a preface, beyond saying that it is, in some degree, a supplement to my previous essays in the same direction; intended chiefly to call attention to the presuppositions of Christian evidence - those preliminary considerations, partly philosophical and partly moral, on which so much of its solidity and strength depends - and further to the respective elements which the intellect, the emotions, and the will contribute towards the gradual development of these presuppositions. The essay is thus primarily concerned with some of the permanent principles of apology rather than with any particular controversies of the hour. But it will also have an indirect reference to those controversies, as tending to exhibit their due relation to the Christian position as a whole. Since it is inevitable that the intellectual difficulties which each successive generation of Christians is called to discuss, should seem relatively larger than they actually are; and need, from time to time, therefore, to be replaced in their proper perspective. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Apologetics: A Defense of the Catholic Faith Mgr. Fontenau, Archbishop of Albi, writes: Under a modest title and in a simple and unpretentious form you have united in a single volume all the arguments which Catholic controversy opposes to contemporary irreligion. Exegesis, philosophy, theology, history, physical sciences, political economy, all branches Of knowledge, human and divine, concur in your work to demonstrate incontestably the perfect agreement of reason and faith. The proofs are abundant, well chosen, and well presented, the arguments nervous and powerful, the style clear, sober, and precise. Your Course of Christian Apologetics, therefore, is not only an instructive book, it is also a finished model of methodical exposition and learned discussion. For these reasons it is truly a most valuable work. Therefore I should like to see it in the library of my seminarians and priests; they will find in it all the elements of Catholic controversy and learn from it how to use them. Mgr. Vigne, Archbishop of Avignon, writes: I shall recom mend it the more willingly that, in my Opinion, it meets the needs of our time, and that, in addition to its being incontestably opportune, it has the essential merit of clearness, solidity of doctrine, and brevity. Ignorance Of the truths of religion is the great evil Of our day, and undoubtedly one of the chief causes of the weakening of the faith among us. Therefore, Rev. Father I should like to see your book in the hands of all young people. Mgr. Sebaux, Bishop of Angouleme, writes: I am happy to unite my suffrage with that Of my venerable colleagues. The book is so clear, so well arranged, and so suited to the condition of minds of the present day that it will render most valuable service. I shall gladly recommend it, and I earnestly desire to see it not only in the hands of the most advanced pupils of our institutions, but also of men of letters, whom a defective religious training has left in ignorance of the decisive reasons of our faith, or who are in a state Of doubt created by Objections which they know not how to answer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Apologetics: The Lectures Constituting the Course in Ethics and Apologetics "To believe in Christianity, without knowing why we believe it, is not Christian faith, but blind credulity." - Whately. "Though we cannot always give a reason for what we believe, we should give a reason why we believe it." - Boyle. "Be ready always to give an answer to every one that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you." - 1 Peter iii, 15. To him who would approach the subject of Christian Apologetics, two introductory questions suggest themselves: 1. Why do I believe that I am a Christian? 2. Why am I a Christian in my belief? These questions differ more in meaning than in language. The first looks for its answer to the past: and personal and sacred experiences are recalled. We may answer a. From the remembrance of sudden conversion; of a gradual tendency towards Christ from early education: From something which has opened the blind eyes, or softened the heart. b. Our present love and obedience give us an additional source of faith in the fact that we are Christians. To the second question, why am I a Christian in belief? and not a Jew, Pagan, Atheist, various answers may be given. a. Providential reasons may have decided; early education or circumstances. But you must be able to point to some elements of Christianity which have secured your deliberate choice. You cannot say as a rational believer, that you merely follow the faith of your fathers. b. You may say, I have adopted the faith of Christendom as that of the enlightened part of the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Witnesses to Christ: A Contribution to Christian Apologetics It is seldom, perhaps, in the preface to lec tures of this kind, that remarks of a character so personal should be introduced. But it is hardly possible to do otherwise at the beginning of such an undertaking; and I shelter myself under the great example of my predecessor when I acknowledge the personal kindness and sym pathy which I received from the inhabitants of the beautiful university town in which the lectures were delivered. The Lament of the Virgin; 3. The Martyrdom of Pilate Naturally the manner of the defence will vary, according to the constitution of the Court, and the code of laws which has been infringed. We shall, however, find that in Christian Apologia there is almost always a reminiscence of the fact that the first Court which sat to judge the Christian believer was a Jewish Sanhedrin. They had their own lictors, before ever Roman fasces were seen, and their forty stripes save one were the primal condemnation which de veloped into the Non licet vos esse of imperial power. It is important to keep this in mind because we shall see in the document before us abundant traces that the Testimony which Jesus foretold was, to begin with, a Testimony against t/ze form, and that it was developed along this line, even though the Jewish advocates had ceased to appear, and the Jews themselves had come to be dismissed with contempt by the Christian Orator. One cannot understand Christian apologetic apart from the relation of Christianity to Judaism. We shall return to this point presently. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid a revival of apologetics, “few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with how Christian faith was defended down through the ages,” say the editors in their introduction to this two-part anthology. “Access to both historical and contemporary texts gives us fresh insight into how our fathers in the faith responded to the questions facing them.” Volume 2 in this one-of-a-kind resource takes a sweeping look at apologetics from the Reformation to the present. Readings from twenty-six apologists, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Francis Schaeffer, Alvin Plantinga, and William Lane Craig are included. With editorial commentary and questions for reflection, Christian Apologetics Past and Present will prove a valuable text for students as well as a unique resource for those interested in defending the faith.
