Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangel in South Africa But if it' is true that the life of every man, whoever he be, exercises an inevitable and silent propaganda, much more is it true of the man of superior civilisation who settles among men of an inferior and backward race. The early colonists, then, from the day when first they came into contact with the Hottentots in friendly intercourse or commercial relationship, began to missionise as well as to colonise. They were men whose fathers and grandfathers had engaged in a life-and-death struggle with Spain for civil and religious liberty. Religion - oi a somewhat formal type perhaps - was an influential factor in their lives. Religious phrases were on everybody's lips. Religious Observances were duly honoured, and their breach punished by fine and by imprisonment. The advent, then Of white men who. Like the ancient Athenians, were in every respect remarkably religious could not but leave upon the minds of the curious and receptive heathen Hottentots an indelible impression. There was more, however, than the mere exercise of unconscious Christian influence in the attitude of the first colonists towards the native inhabitants of the Cape Peninsula. They were strictly enjoined by the Directors of the Company to exert themselves, by positive acts of friendliness and forbearance, in winning the confidence of the Hottentots. For said Janssen and Proot, two castaways on these shores, who had been well treated by the Hottentots during their enforced detention, by maintaining a good correspondence with them, we shall be able in time to employ some of their children as boys and servants, and to educate them in the Christian Religion, by which means many souls will be brought to God and to the Christian Reformed Religion. These words express also the sentiments of the Netherlands Company itself, for in the thirteenth article of its Charter pro vision is made for the settlement of ministers and teachers at the chief posts in the Company's colonial possessions, for the admonition of the persons abiding there, and for the advancement of non-christians and the instruction Of their children, in order that the Name of Christ may be extended, and the interests of the Company promoted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vee-Boers: A Tale of Adventure in Southern Africa The time was just after the annexation, and our vee-boers, as introduced to the reader, were weeks away from their abandoned homes in the Transvaal. That they had permission to enter the territory of the Tebele, might be taken for granted, otherwise they would have been on dangerous ground. For its powerful and despotic chief was not the man to allow intrusion into his dominions, even by peaceful travellers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pathfinder in South Central Africa: A Story of Pioneer Missionary Work and Adventure The illustrations are nearly all from my own photographs. They were taken under difficulties, and at considerable expense. They are unique in that they are in themselves a valuable historic record Of work done; they illustrate the text and constitute a welcome addition to the book. For the sake of completeness a table of events is included. My sincere thanks are due to my brethren in the ministry who have so heartily received me into their Churches; to those who have made special gifts to the Nambala Mission; to the many friends whose hospitality I have shared during my furlough in England; and also to the still larger number who have prayed and wrought for the success of the missionary cause. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Umzila's Kingdom: A Field for Christian Missions One thing that disagreeably impresses the traveler is the size and hight of the grass growing on the slopes. So high, in fact, is it that no view can ever be obtained of the country, and it forms quite an arched way under which you pass along, opening a path with your stick and hands. The grass seeds, like jave lins, descend in showers and fill your clothes until you are nearly driven mad with the itching, and blinded as well. You cannot walk through it until ten o'clock without getting as wet as if you had been through a river, the dews are so heavy.
