Wie ich noch aufzeigen werde, war er den Menschen jeden Tag gegenwärtig. Es gab zahlreiche Bedrohungen und gleichzeitig nur wenig, was man dagegen unternehmen konnte. Daher ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass sich die Menschen des Mittelalters ebenso zahlreiche Gedanken darüber machten, was sie nach dem Tode erwarten würde. Im christlichen Europa verfasste eine ganze Reihe von Geistlichen Texte zu diesem Thema. Einen besonderer Schwerpunkt bildeten hier die christlichen Werte, die essentiell waren für eine spätere Aufnahme in das Himmelreich. Die Gebote mussten eingehalten werden, um am Tag des jüngsten Gerichts entsprechend positiv beurteilt zu werden. Hinsichtlich der hohen Ideale, die hier gefordert sind, lohnt ein näherer Blick auf den Stand des Mittelalters, der in einiger Regelmäßigkeit unter anderem gegen das fünfte Gebot verstieß – das Rittertum, die elitäre Kriegerklasse der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft. Da der sogenannte Wehrstand aber ein notwendiger Bestandteil der christlichen Welt darstellte, gibt es in mehreren Texten Versuche, die Gewalt zu rechtfertigen, zu idealisieren oder sie gar in gewünschte Bahnen zu lenken. Zur gleichen Zeit gab es aber auch ganz gegenteilige Ansichten, die den Rittern für ihre schweren Verfehlungen anderen Menschen gegenüber ewige Höllenqualen prophezeiten. Mit diesem Gegensatz möchte ich mich in dieser Arbeit auseinandersetzen. Wie ging die Kirche im allgemeinen und die geistlichen Autoren im speziellen damit um? Wie sieht ihre Argumentation aus, wenn es um den christlichen Ritter und die Gewalt gegen andere Menschen geht? Und, am wichtigsten, wie sahen sie es um das Heil der ritterlichen Seele bestellt? Es geht also darum, wie geistliche Autoren sich und die Hauptfiguren ihrer Texte in einer Welt verorteten, in der christliche Werte und ausufernde Gewalt selten getrennt voneinander auftraten.

Einschlägige Schriften werden dabei ebenso berücksichtigt wie das über zahlreiche Äußerungen verteilte, verbreitete, gerade auch stereotype Bild der Anderen. Die Frage, was man in diesem Sinne unter Heiden oder Häretikern an sich verstanden hat und wie sich die Religionen jeweils vom Christentum abgrenzen, spielt hier eine ebenso große Rolle wie die Einschätzung, ob Muslime und Juden im Mittelalter als dem Christentum näher stehende Monotheisten anerkannt oder ob Häretiker und Orthodoxe überhaupt als Christen wahrgenommen worden sind. Solche Fragen werden hier in diesem Umfang erstmals systematisch für das Bild aller anderen Religionen und vor allem zum ersten Mal vergleichend untersucht. Das Buch bietet daher fundierte Einblicke in die mittelalterlichen Vorstellungswelten und deren Bedeutung für den Umgang der Religionen miteinander.
