Download or read book Understanding Jesus written by Joe Amaral and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2011-09-10 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern-day Christians often bring their own presuppositions and assumptions to the reading of the Bible, not realizing how deeply their understanding of Christ's life and teachings is affected by a 21st-century worldview. In Understanding Jesus, author Joe Amaral delves deep into Jewish history, societal mores, and cultural traditions, closing the gap created by geographical distance and over two thousand years of history. Using a chronological approach to the life of Christ, he guides the reader through significant events such as Jesus' birth, baptism, and crucifixion, pointing out illuminating details that that the Western mind would normally miss. Amaral's premise is that to understand Jesus, we must understand the time and place in which he was born, the background from which he drew his illustrations, and the audience he spoke to. Throughout the book he explores specific terms, places, and events for their significance and shows how they add richness and meaning to the text. Topics include the connection between Jesus and John the Baptist, the annual Feasts and why they are important to modern Christianity, Jewish customs such as foot-washing, clean and unclean foods, paying tribute to political governments, and the significance of various miracles. In Understanding Jesus, Amaral draws back the curtain on a way of life that existed during the reign of the Caesars, and in doing so, reveals truths about the way we live more than two thousand years later, half a world away.
Book Synopsis The Medieval Manuscripts of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin by : Raymond Gillespie
Download or read book The Medieval Manuscripts of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin written by Raymond Gillespie and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies one of the most remarkable collections of medieval manuscripts in Ireland. In the popular mind the medieval manuscripts of Ireland were all destroyed in the Four Courts fire of 1922 but this is far from the truth. From the 1170s the Augustinian cathedral priory at Christ Church in Dublin commissioned, collected and used manuscript materials in its everyday life. In the process they created an important series of codices and deeds that remained in the cathedral~and so survived the Record Office fire. This large assemblage of material from the 12th-century martyrology to the 16th-century 'Book of Obits' reflects the changing religious, social, cultural and intellectual concerns of the world in which they were written. Each essay analyzes a manuscript and places it in its wider context; therefore this volume makes a significant contribution to the intellectual and cultural history of medieval Ireland. Contributors: Alan Fletcher (UCD), Raymond Gillespie (NUIM), Colm Lennon (NUIM), Colmán Ó Clabaigh (Glenstal Abbey), Pádraig Ó Riain (UCC), Raymond Refaussé (RCB Library).

Download or read book Defenders of the Faith in Word and Deed written by Charles Patrick Connor and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defenders of the faith have been raised up in every era of the Church to proclaim fidelity to the truth by their words and deeds. Some have fought heresy and overcome confusion: Athanasius against the Arians and Ignatius Loyola in response to the Protestant reformers. Others have shed their blood for the faith: the early Christian martyrs of Rome, or Thomas More, John Fisher and Edmund Campion in Reformation England. Still others have endured a "dry" martyrdom: St. Philip Howard, Josef Cardinal Mindszenty and Jesuit Walter Ciszek. Intellectuals have been no less conspicuous in their zealous defense of the faith: Bonaventure, Albert, Thomas Aquinas, or Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.

Book excerpt: How do you access a real, thriving, vibrant faith? You trust a big God, and you start living like he’s real. It’s time to put our comfort and ease and false security on the line. If we know God is real, let’s pray as if he’s actually listening. If we know he’s good, let’s reflect that goodness in the world. When our problems feel big, let’s lean on the One who is bigger. Is that risky? “Sure,” says Owen Strachan. “Embrace it anyway. It’s literally the only way to live.”
Download or read book Tangible written by Christopher Sicks and published by Tyndale House. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s church, there seems to be two well-intentioned groups. “Deed” people feed the hungry and help the poor, while “Word” people proclaim the gospel and engage in apologetics. The two often seem to compete with one another, but God always intended them to be partners. Sacrificial love can grab the attention of those we serve, opening their ears and minds to the words we share. In Tangible, author and Pastor Chris Sicks explains how God’s people can effectively introduce hurting people to God through intentional acts of kindness. This book does more than discuss these good ideas. It’s full of ways to make God known to the needy in your community today. Extra features include: A thorough resource section Ministry examples Discussion questions for personal study or group discussion By sharing both words of truth and deeds of mercy, God’s people will reflect Christ’s love—the most tangible proof of God’s existence.

Book Synopsis What Is the Mission of the Church? by : Kevin DeYoung
Download or read book What Is the Mission of the Church? written by Kevin DeYoung and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice and mission are hot topics today: there's a wonderful resurgence of motivated Christians passionate about spreading the gospel and caring for the needs of others. But in our zeal to get sharing and serving, many are unclear on gospel and mission. Yes, we are called to spend ourselves for the sake of others, but what is the church's unique priority as it engages the world? DeYoung and Gilbert write to help Christians "articulate and live out their views on the mission of the church in ways that are theologically faithful, exegetically careful, and personally sustainable." Looking at the Bible's teaching on evangelism, social justice, and shalom, they explore the what, why, and how of the church's mission. From defining "mission", to examining key passages on social justice and their application, to setting our efforts in the context of God's rule, DeYoung and Gilbert bring a wise, studied perspective to the missional conversation. Readers in all spheres of ministry will grow in their understanding of the mission of the church and gain a renewed sense of urgency for Jesus' call to preach the Word and make disciples.
Book Synopsis Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Revised Edition) by : John Piper
Download or read book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Revised Edition) written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Jesus Christ? You've never met him in person, and you don't know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ-the divine Person revealed in the Bible-has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, "Yes, this is truth." It's like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet. The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross. Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God's Word. Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Ask God for the grace to do his will, and you will see the truth of his Son. John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.
Book Synopsis Passport to Heaven by : Micah Wilder
Download or read book Passport to Heaven written by Micah Wilder and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You have a call, Elder Wilder.” When missionary Micah Wilder set his sights on bringing a Baptist congregation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had no idea that he was the one about to be changed. Yet when he finally came to know the God of the Bible, Micah had no choice but to surrender himself—no matter the consequences. For a passionate young Mormon who had grown up in the Church, finding authentic faith meant giving up all he knew: his community, his ambitions, and his place in the world. Yet as Micah struggled to reconcile the teachings of his Church with the truths revealed in the Bible, he awakened to his need for God’s grace. This led him to be summoned to the door of the mission president, terrified but confident in the testimony he knew could cost him everything. Passport to Heaven is a gripping account of Micah’s surprising journey from living as a devoted member of a religion based on human works to embracing the divine mercy and freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol 3 of 3 volume set, provides translations of the Goldsmiths' Company Register of Deeds with full explicatory annotation, and with a clear introduction to both the manuscript and the legal texts contained in it. The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, commonly known as the Goldsmiths' Company, is one of the twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London. This three-volume edition provides translations of the company's Register of Deeds with full explicatory annotation and with a clear introduction to both the manuscript and the legal texts contained within. Additionally, the volumes contain detailed name and subject indexes. The company's Register of Deeds has never been fully utilised by historians, but it contains a record copy made from the fifteenth century onwards of the original deeds of the company's acquisitions of property from the reign of King Richard I to the seventeenth century. These deeds reveal much about the precise location of properties and their inhabitants. Wills, often appearing in the Register, help to piece together a social history of the time. Charitable purposes were often the reason for monies or property bequeathed to the Goldsmiths, sometimes of an educational nature, or of almsgiving to the poor, or for the training and support of young goldsmiths and silversmiths. Many documents also concern women, either acting solely in their own name or jointly with a husband, sometimes also appearing as daughters or sisters, providing evidence regarding their legal position during the medieval and early modern period. The editing and translation of these documents (from Latin and French into modern-day English) will be of great use to historians interested in the buildings of medieval and Tudor London and their use as personal or business premises. But beyond these obvious confines, these so far hidden sources will help to rewrite a social, legal, and economic history of medieval and Tudor London.
