Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treat ment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or intro duction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whose Son Is Christ?: Two Lectures on Progress in Religion Religion is an affair of the heart and becomes entwined with the affections from youth onwards, like one's native language and one's mother country. Wherever the heart is concerned, um sought interference in the affairs of others is both Objectionable and dangerous, and nothing is further from the intention of these lectures than to alienate anyone from the faith Of his fathers. The pious Israelite who, faithful to the usages of his forefathers, prays to the One Eternal who once led his people out of Egypt; the Christian who is confident of reconciliation with God his Father through Jesus Christ, his Saviour the Mohammedan who, in obedience to the precepts of the Prophet, prostrates himself in the dust five times a day before Allah, the All Merciful and Gracious - shall our Father in Heaven not be equally near to all these his chil dren, provided that they prove their devoutness by their deeds? For Without works assuredly every form of faith is dead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One of the elements of modern religious life to be greatly prized is a widespread desire to learn all that can be known of Jesus of Nazareth. Every attempt to meet this need of a reliable representation of the facts about Jesus must be based upon pro longed criticism of the historical sources, combined with recurrent contemplation of His Person. The Gospels must be appraised, or they will never be appreciated. Evasion of free inquiry, either on the pretext of the sanctity of the books or the majesty of their subject, excites a corrosive suspicion that the history cannot be trustworthy. Even now an opinion is abroad that we cannot be sure of the truth of the Gospels; and with it mingles an impatience at endless, abstruse inquiries which lead nowhere. From all sorts and conditions of men there comes a loud demand for frankness from competent scholars. While there can be only a limited num ber of men intellectually equipped for dealing with the recondite problems arising out of the Synoptical and Johannine literature, there is a growing multitude who feel themselves held by the soul's quest for Jesus Christ. The following study, therefore, aims at showing how one of the multitude who seek for this supremely important knowledge, having been guided by an honest, earnest impressionism, has gained the satisfaction of a reconstructed con ception of the world's greatest, most loving and Divine Teacher. Jesus is no spent force; He is still luring men forward by His gracious, strong personality. The rigorous criticism to which the Gospels have been subjected has resulted in a vindication of their substantial historicity. Tnixlike a new thought of Jesus rises from the fires of criticism, andwe see this indestructible Person more clearly than any generation since the time of the Apostles. How He lived and died, what He believed and taught, can be discovered with greater certainty and lucidity by reason of the work done by scholars and critics. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
