When one big-eyed chick fails to yank its prize worm from the ground, it’s time to bring in a friend—and then another, and another. But if adding a rooster to the crew still doesn’t do the trick, could it be that a worm isn’t always what it seems? Each turn of the page brings a new number and a new rhyme in this delightful debut from both author and illustrator.

Book excerpt: The Ties That Blind is quite appropriate to the time in consideration of the present growth of interest in religious and spiritual matters. Additionally, much of the storys prophetic content is extremely relevant to the events of September 11, 2001, although the book was completed prior to that date. The author skillfully depicts the realities of racial prejudice; much of the violence being recounted from his experience, while driving home the point that love always conquers hate. It is a true inspiration to people of faith, criminal justice practitioners, and those who fight for racial equality and brotherly love Arnold Gibbs is a Vietnam veteran and a of the Miami Police Departments Medal of Honor. He was raised in the Liberty City projects and knows, first hand, of the realities depicted in his novel. He has been a Christian for 25 years and is dedicated to his faith. All of these factors combine to provide the ingredients for a story that is a must read for people of faith, criminal justice practitioners, war veterans and activists for racial equality and harmony. There are not many authors who are as qualified and capable to bring to the reader such compelling drama as in The Ties That Blind.

Inspired by the work of Rod Serling in his seminal television series 'The Twilight Zone'&'Night Gallery', as well as 'The Outer Limits' & 'Twisted Tales', Touch of Evil poses questions, then offers possible answers that take the reader along pathways they may not wish to travel. For example: every day you follow a particular path in your life. But what happens when one tiny, but significant detail is changed-by fate, chance or just plain Luck? You fall asleep on a train & end up...where? That shortcut you're thinking of taking? You may not end up where you think you're going to & be careful of boxed chocolates delivered when you're not expecting them. Inside these pages you'll find things you take for granted in every day life turned ninety degrees. Just because it looks the same never means it is. A Touch of Evil. Just a tiny touch. Enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes called the American Shakespeare, William Faulkner is known for providing poignant and accurate renderings of the human condition, creating a world of colorful characters in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, and writing in a style that is both distinct and demanding. Though he is known as a Southern writer, his appeal transcends regional and even national boundaries. Since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, he has been the subject of more than 5,000 scholarly books and articles. Academic interest in his career has been matched by popular acclaim, with some of his works adapted for the cinema. This reference is an authoritative guide to Faulkner's life, literature, and legacy. The encyclopedia includes nearly 500 alphabetically arranged entries for topics related to Faulkner and his world. Included are entries for his works and major characters and themes, as well as the literary and cultural contexts in which his texts were conceived, written, and published. There are also entries for relatives, friends, and other persons important to Faulkner's biography; historical events, persons, and places; social and cultural developments; and literary and philosophical terms and movements. The entries are written by expert contributors who bring a broad range of perspectives and experience to their analysis of his work. Entries typically conclude with suggestions for further reading, and the volume closes with a bibliography and detailed index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s photographer and documentary filmmaker Michael Ford left graduate school and a college teaching position in Boston, Massachusetts, packed his young family into a van, and headed to rural Mississippi, where he spent the next four years recording everyday life through interviews, still photographs, and film. The project took him to Oxford (in Lafayette County), as well as to Marshall, Panola, and Tate Counties, a remote area north of Sardis Lake. His efforts resulted in the award-winning documentary film Homeplace (1975), but none of the still photographs from this time were ever published. With this illustrated volume, those photographs are now available and offer a valuable window onto the rural, local culture of northern Mississippi at that time. These moving photographs illustrate Ford’s experiences as an apprentice to blacksmith Marion Randolph Hall, his visits to Hal Waldrip's General Store in Chulahoma, a day spent with AG Newsom and his crew making molasses, and Othar Turner's barbecues accompanied by traditional African American fife-and-drum music. They also capture the evocative landscape of the Mississippi hill country and the everyday lives of its residents. In 2013 Ford returned to his adopted homeplace, camera in hand, only to find that most everything had changed—or was gone. This photo essay project juxtaposes the rural Mississippi of the 1970s and the mid-2010s with Ford’s personal reflections drawn from his journals, interviews, and archival notes.
