Book Synopsis Americanizing Britain by : Genevieve Abravanel
Download or read book Americanizing Britain written by Genevieve Abravanel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Great Britain, which entered the twentieth century as a dominant empire, reinvent itself in reaction to its fears and fantasies about the United States? Investigating the anxieties caused by the invasion of American culture-from jazz to Ford motorcars to Hollywood films-during the first half of the twentieth century, Genevieve Abravanel theorizes the rise of the American Entertainment Empire as a new style of imperialism that threatened Britain's own. In the early twentieth century, the United States excited a range of utopian and dystopian energies in Britain. Authors who might ordinarily seem to have little in common-H.G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, and Virginia Woolf-began to imagine Britain's future through America. Abravanel explores how these novelists fashioned transatlantic fictions as a response to the encroaching presence of Uncle Sam. She then turns her attention to the arrival of jazz after World War I, showing how a range of writers, from Elizabeth Bowen to W.H. Auden, deployed the new music as a metaphor for the modernization of England. The global phenomenon of Hollywood film proved even more menacing than the jazz craze, prompting nostalgia for English folk culture and a lament for Britain's literary heritage. Abravanel then refracts British debates about America through the writing of two key cultural critics: F.R. Leavis and T.S. Eliot. In so doing, she demonstrates the interdependencies of some of the most cherished categories of literary study-language, nation, and artistic value-by situating the high-low debates within a transatlantic framework.

That is, until he is forced to work with Amelia. Amelia is bright, precocious and does not have time for his vendetta. She is working on a machine designed to map the planets, an orrery, and has been promised a permanent home with the Sisterhood of Cultivators if she succeeds. The only problem is, the orrery is a lot more than a simple machine – it is also a doorway. And when a door is left open, anything might come through… When Seven realises what it is Amelia is building and the danger it presents, he must make a choice – the hardest choice he has ever faced: to act selflessly. Can Seven put aside his own wishes in order to play the hero and save the world? And, more importantly, does he even want to? The Princess And The Orrery is the third novel in The Pathways Tree series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man’s home is his castle, but for Percy Spender that motto has been taken just a bit too literally. After the sudden death of first one distant relative and then another, the amiable Perce has become the 12th Earl of Ellesmere. And his home, no longer a cozy council flat, is now the drafty, imposing Chetton Hall, complete with more bedrooms than Perce can count and an army of servants. Frankly, all these fancy trappings make Perce itch. He’d just as soon sell up, buy a comfy cottage, and put a bundle on the ponies. However, some of his mates and family members have other ideas. And the sad fact is that an Unfortunate Accident can happen to anyone, even a lord of the realm.

Book excerpt: Isn't true love a wonderful thing? Rags to Riches and Paupers to Kings. A wish. A dream. The good always win. But don't look too closely, or the fae might creep in... Everyone knows how folk tales are supposed to go: a hero, a heroine, a kiss and a wedding. Happily ever after and on to the next one. But what most people don't know is why these stories always seem to have the same characters, the same plots, and the same endings. The truth is, so-called 'fairy stories' are the product of a totalitarian fae government. These formulaic plots aren't accidental, they are designed. Every evil witch, every poisoned apple and every deadly spinning wheel; every happily ever after, every true love's kiss and every knight in shining armour - all are the products of the General Administration, and if there's one thing the GenAm hates, it's unscripted behaviour. So when Bea, a lowly cabbage fairy, decides she wants more for herself than a bit-part role, all hell breaks loose. Suddenly Bea finds herself at the centre of a whole heap of trouble, and any mistake could have her hauled up in front of the sinister and secretive Redaction Department, where she'll face a fare much worse than death. Can Bea overthrow the General Administration, save her friends and - maybe - come out on top? After all, does anyone ever really get a happy ending? This box set brings together the first three books in the bestselling Pathways Tree series, The Fairy's Tale, The Academy, and The Princess And The Orrery. If you like your fantasy with a dash of dystopia and characters you can fall in love with, The Pathways Tree series is for you! Please note The Pathways Tree series is written in British English.
