Book excerpt: It is now generally accepted that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer and to global warming of the earth. In response, The Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer was formulated by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to restrict the consumption of most of the CFCs and halons that have ozone depletion potentials (ODPs). This Digest describes how, in the short term, the use of CFCs in buildings can be minimised or eliminated by using alternative substances; it also considers the implications of using those alternatives.

Book excerpt: This Digest is one of a series on issues of environmental significance. It summarises recent and proposed changes to the current phase-out timetables for the CFCs and halons, and options for their replacement. It is now generally accepted that emissions of CFCs and other chlorine-containing substances, including HCFCs and halons, are causing depletion of the ozone layer and that production of these substances must be phased out as soon as is possible. The Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, and an EC Regulation, now require the CFCs and halons to be completely phased out.

Book Synopsis Economic Implications of Regulating Chlorofluorocarbon Emissions from Nonaerosol Applications by : Adele R. Palmer
Download or read book Economic Implications of Regulating Chlorofluorocarbon Emissions from Nonaerosol Applications written by Adele R. Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines and compares the outcomes of two alternate methods for controlling nonaerosol emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Conventional regulatory methods such as technology standards are compared with innovative methods of regulation such as use taxes or production quotas distributed through the use of marketable permits. The economic costs of each system are calculated and compared, along with a discussion of the policy issues which must be addressed when choosing one form of regulation over another.
Book Synopsis Chlorofluorocarbon Environmental Issues Related to Conservation Acquisition in Commercial Buildings by :

This book was released on 1990 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scientific evidence strongly suggests that the release of large quantities of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases into the atmosphere will result in environmentally harmful long-term effects. Because of those effects, a massive worldwide effort is currently under way to ban their use. At request of the Bonneville Power Administration, the Pacific Northwest Laboratory conducted a literature search to identify the issues surrounding the CFC phaseout. The search was focused on how these issues impact the commercial building sector. Information was obtained that describes: How the release of CFCs into the atmosphere may affect the global environment; legislative and regulatory programs initiated to restrict CFCs; potential impacts the reduced CFC supply will have on commercial buildings; the most promising CFC substitute technologies; and the potential costs of CFC restriction. 11 refs., 2 tabs.

Download or read book A Research Needs Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of the state of the art in refrigeration and insulation technologies is carried out to evaluate the potential for efficient substitutes for CFCs and HCFCs to facilitate the transition to a CFC-free environment. Opportunities for improved efficiency in domestic refrigeration, building chillers, commercial refrigeration and industrial refrigeration are evaluated. Needs for alternate refrigerants, improved components, and/or alternate cycles are identified. A summary of on-going research is presented in each area, and the potential roles of industry and government are considered. The most promising approaches for refrigeration technology fall into these categories: (1) improved vapor compressor cycles with alternate fluids, (2) Stirling cycle development and (3) advances in absorption technology. A summary of on-going research into advanced insulation, focused on vacuum -- based insulation technology refrigeration is developed. Insulation applications considered include appliances, transport refrigeration, and buildings. Specific recommendations for a long-term R & D agenda are present. The potential benefits, research, general approach, and probability of success are addressed.
