Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brisk and accessible history, sinologist Thomas O. Höllmann explains the development of the Chinese writing system and its importance in literature, religion, art, and other aspects of culture. Spanning the earliest epigraphs and oracle bones to writing and texting on computers and mobile phones today, Chinese Script is a wide-ranging and versatile introduction to the complexity and beauty of written text and calligraphy in the Chinese world. Höllmann delves into the origins of Chinese script and its social and political meanings across millennia of history. He recounts the social history of the writing system; written and printed texts; and the use of writing materials such as paper, silk, ink, brush, and printing techniques. The book sheds light on the changing role of literacy and education; the politics of orthographic reform; and the relationship of Chinese writing to non-Han Chinese languages and cultures. Höllmann explains the inherent complexity of Chinese script, demonstrating why written Chinese expresses meaning differently than oral language and the subtleties of the relationship between spoken word and written text. He explores calligraphy as an art, the early letter press, and other ways of visually representing Chinese languages. Chinese Script also provides handy illustrations of the concepts discussed, showing how ideographs function and ways to decipher them visually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Zgusta’s work in lexicography and linguistics proper is built upon a multilingual command of linguistic theory, literary history, the history of linguistics, and his experience as a ›practical‹ lexicographer. The topic under consideration may be the organization and development of a standard variety of a language; explorations of the consequences of linguistic theory on the practical lexicographic applications in making dictionaries that range from Ahtna to Zoque and Batad Ifuagao to Yolngu-Matha; the method of definition in bilingual dictionaries; the state of affairs in Russian lexicography; learner’s dictionaries; ancient Greek lexicography; pragmatics; scripts and morphological types; the history of English lexicography; or behind the scenes at the making of the Czech-Chinese dictionary. The reader will not only be offered a careful and wide-ranging study of these important topics in the discipline, but will be taken on a guided comparative and historical tour that illuminates the strengths and weaknesses of current practice and theory. His work reminds those linguists and lexicographers who are locked into ›paradigm‹ battles of the Kuhnian kind that the wheel has already been invented. Most of the articles in this volume have been updated. The editors have also conflated six articles on the history of dictionaries into one seamless narrative with connective tissue supplied by Zgusta.

However, we should be aware of the fact that Chinese Medicine is challenged in its existence because it is widely unknown. Fostering the understanding of Chinese Medicine in various aspects is, hence, the main aim of this book that gives interesting insights into the discussions on current developments in Chinese Medicine research.

This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese term 聖 sheng (simplified: 圣) appears eight times in six paragraphs in the Analects of Confucius (Lun Yu). The all-time champion of English translations for sheng(ren) is 'the sage'. In most English (and French) writings on the Chinese tradition one will come across the translation "the sages (les sages)" eventually; but not so in the majority of German writings. The all-favored German translation, based on Schott, Grube, Wilhelm, Haas, Biallas, Conrady and many others, is the biblical "die Heiligen" (saints or holy-men). This is rather surprising at first. Sages and saints are two very different archetypes of wisdom. In this paper I will showcase the most important German, French/Latin, and English translations of sheng(ren) in the Analects ranging from 1649 to 2009. I will discuss some of the odd translators' choices made, and why: saints, philosophers, geniuses, Berufene (appointees), Kulturheroen (cultural heroes), Great Men, Göttliche (the god-like) and more.

This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on helping readers to fill the gap of the little known history between Western Europe and its most important trading partner: the People’s Republic of China. Inspired by the economic and political signifance of Sino-European relations, this book shows how the China policies of the three biggest states of Western Europe – Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany – helped China reintegrate into the international community in the 1970s. Against the background of the Cold War, the end of Maoism, and the emergence of globalization, the governments in Bonn, Paris and London had to find ways of dealing with Europe’s declining influence and promote their own national interests in Asia. Based on newly declassified government files, readers will find such sources invaluable in understanding the argument that, despite pursuing very different policies, the three governments supported a rapid expansion of peaceful exchange between the People’s Republic and Europe and substantially contributed to the success of Beijing's reform policy.

Book excerpt: With more than one hundred-fifty books and three hundred published articles on proverb studies that have attracted wide attention of folklorists around the world, it is little wonder that international scholars look upon Wolfgang Mieder as the modern-day Pied Piper of paremiology. For this festschrift, some of the world's leading proverb and folklore scholars have come together to commemorate Mieder's sixty-fifth birthday. Authors from Russia, Eastern and Western Europe, Israel, and the United States have contributed essays representative of the scope and breadth of Mieder's own impressive scholarship. The Proverbial «Pied Piper» honors Wolfgang Mieder's legendary contributions to the study of proverbs and contains new scholarship by some of the best paremiologists in the world.
