Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Three Gorges dam, currently being constructed on the Yantgze River in China, is controversial both inside and outside China due to the population in the area and the environmental impacts. Using material previously unavailable in any Western language, it analyses the Chinese discussion and policy-making for the resettlement process. It also discusses the development aspects of resettling such a large population (officially 1.2 million), as well as assessing the actual and potential impact of resettlement on this population.

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation titled Water Resources Management and Sustainable Development: A Case Study of the Three Gorges Dam Project at Yangtze River submitted by Law Sau Wah, Kitty for the Degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in 2003 The present study is a small effort in the direction of linking water resources management (WRM), sustainable development (SD) and reservoir resettlement. It seeks to examine the achievement of China in promoting SD of reservoir resettlers, and add a previously neglected focus on social equity and development, particularly through the case study of the Three Gorges Dam Project (TGP). This study would also explore strategic policy options to WRM and development planning especially in dealing with the question of intragenerational fairness. The TGP will relocate over 1.13 million people within the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) or outside to eleven coastal provinces. The TGP resettlement project suffers from inherent institutional, regulatory and financing problems. The developmental resettlement policy of the TGP has limited success in achieving development with resettlement due to poor social impact assessment, weak appraisal system, deliberate underestimation of resettlement scope and tight schedule. Cost- overruns, insecure financial sources and wide-spread funds embezzlement also make the plan fail to adequately compensate for the losses of the TGP resettlers. The results of the SD assessment of the TGP resettlers can be summarised as follows: (1) the social equity of the TGP resettlers is undermined rather than promoted because of declining employment opportunities, income inequality, poor benefit sharing, lack of local participation in decision-making processes and problems of social integration; (2) many of the TGP resettlers encountered high economic pressure after relocation for the sake of the restoration or betterment of housing condition; and (3) the educational opportunities generally increase after relocation, but access is not sustainable. If we assume that assets are not fully substitutable, the development capacity and opportunity of the TGP resettlers have been undermined because of the project as the gains in human-made capital assets cannot compensate for the losses in social, human and knowledge assets. The TGP resettlement project cannot achieve 'strong sustainability' as the social dimensions of SD are ignored. To conclude, the current dam practices and resettlement policies in China should be revisited. It is recommended that the principles of SD should be fully incorporated into the planning of water project resettlement schemes. Participatory approach should be adopted in all decision-making processes with the sufficient provision of relevant information. Finally, poverty alleviation should be the core subject of WRM and resettlement projects in addition to SD. DOI: 10.5353/th_b2682754 Subjects: Water resources development - China

Book excerpt: This volume translates crucial Chinese documents on a debate currently raging in China on a proposed project that has enormous implications for its environmental, economic, and social impact - the Three Gorges (Sanxia) Project on the Yangtze River. The most massive water resource project ever planned in China and one of the largest in the world, the Three Gorges Project would cost $1.1 billion to build, would necessitate the relocation of 1.1 million people, would flood a 375-mile-long area and thus destroy some of China's - indeed the world's - most beautiful scenery, and would threaten the extinction of a rare river porpoise. The editors seek to place the arguments in a clear and scholarly perspective that helps to make this book a valuable source of information.
Book Synopsis The River Dragon Has Come! by : Dai Qing
Download or read book The River Dragon Has Come! written by Dai Qing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ongoing courageous struggle of a relatively small group of Chinese to prevent the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in China, Dai Qing is the outspoken leader whose eloquent voice is always heard despite threats and intimidation by the Chinese authorities to silence it. Dai Qing, an investigative journalist and author with a wide audience in China and abroad, compiled this book of essays and field reports assessing the impact of the Three Gorges megadam now under construction at Sandouping in China's Hubei province at great risk to her own freedom. This book is an effort to prevent history from repeating itself ten-fold (a reference to the great floods in 1975 during which over 60 dams collapsed and at least 100,000 people lost their lives) if the 39 billion cubic metres of water in the Three Gorges reservoir ever escapes by natural or man-made catastrophes. These comprehensive essays reveal the deep rooted problems presented by the Three Gorges project that the government is attempting to disguise or suppress. The main concerns are population resettlement and human rights, the irreversible environmental and economic impact, the loss of cultural antiquities and historical sites, military considerations, and hidden dam disasters from the past. Opponents of the dam are attempting to kill the project or at least reduce the size of the megadam now planned to be the biggest, most expensive and, incidentally, the most hazardous of all hydro-electric projects on this planet.

Book Synopsis Reservoir Sedimentation by : G.W. Annandale
Download or read book Reservoir Sedimentation written by G.W. Annandale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance. This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple. A major feature of the book is the application of stream power theory to explain the process of reservoir sedimentation and to develop four new methods for predicting sediment distribution in reservoirs. The book is primarily directed at practising engineers involved in the planning and design of water resources projects and at post-graduate students interested in this field of study.

Book Synopsis Dams and Development in China by : Bryan Tilt
Download or read book Dams and Development in China written by Bryan Tilt and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is home to half of the world's large dams and adds dozens more each year. The benefits are considerable: dams deliver hydropower, provide reliable irrigation water, protect people and farmland against flooding, and produce hydroelectricity in a nation with a seeimingly insatiable appetite for energy. As hydropower responds to a larger share of energy demand, dams may also help to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, welcome news in a country where air and water pollution have become dire and greenhouse gas emissions are the highest in the world. Yet the advantages of dams come at a high cost for river ecosystems and for the social and economic well-being of local people, who face displacement and farmland loss. This book examines the array of water-management decisions faced by Chinese leaders and their consequences for local communities. Focusing on the southwestern province of Yunnan—a major hub for hydropower development in China—which encompasses one of the world's most biodiverse temperate ecosystems and one of China's most ethnically and culturally rich regions, Bryan Tilt takes the reader from the halls of decision-making power in Beijing to Yunnan's rural villages. In the process, he examines the contrasting values of government agencies, hydropower corporations, NGOs, and local communities and explores how these values are linked to longstanding cultural norms about what is right, proper, and just. He also considers the various strategies these groups use to influence water-resource policy, including advocacy, petitioning, and public protest. Drawing on a decade of research, he offers his insights on whether the world's most populous nation will adopt greater transparency, increased scientific collaboration, and broader public participation as it continues to grow economically.
