Book excerpt: Since its beginning in China in the 1960s, input-output analysis has expanded rapidly in terms of both theoretical developments and empirical applications. The scarcity of data coming out of China and the limited access to it makes the three major input-output tables published here for the first time in English even more valuable. This study will have special significance for economists and planners using the input-output system of analysis.

Book excerpt: This book presents pioneering work on an interregional input-output table of the Chinese economy and its applications to the analysis of interregional and interindustrial relations in China. It is the fruit of the authors' joint efforts of more than five years to establish a solid basis for the analysis of interregional relations in China, in the hope of laying the foundation for further studies of regional development in that country. The book endeavors to make a contribution to the regional typology of the Chinese economy. The Chinese provinces are classified into seven large regions. The interregional input-output table is constructed accordingly.Chapter I describes the methodology for producing this interregional input-output (IRIO) table. Chapter II presents the (IRIO) table after a brief explanation of the Chinese statistical data needed for the compilation of the table. Chapter III explains the basis of seven large regions adopted for the IRIO table. Chapter IV deals with the interdependence of regions and the effects of the changes in some parameters of one region on the activities in other regions. Chapter V, the last chapter, applies the IRIO table to policy analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the basic process of China’s fourteen five-year plans with systematic theoretical overview and rich historical data and moves on to discuss the theoretical logic of plan-based state governance. The authors hold that the five-year planning system with Chinese characteristics is a flexible planning system; through adaptive macro-planning and incentive target governance, it mobilizes government, market and social forces to work together to fulfill national objectives and is a representative mechanism of the state governance system and a symbol of modernized state governance capacity. From an academic point of view, it theoretically answers questions about what, why and how concerning the five-year plans. From an interdisciplinary perspective, it explores the theoretical logic and experience of plan-based governance by combining Marxism, western theories, and the science of history. Also, it tries to represent historical facts based on a vast literature about the history of CPC and PRC, reviews historical details of the previous thirteen five-year plans, and describes the great journey of the plan preparation and implementation under the CPC leadership. This book has been published in Simplified Chinese (Peking University Press) and Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong Open Page Press). It has won the 2021 Annual Books of China Economics Education and Research Network, the first prize of excellent Works of the First Young Marxism Prize, 100 "Red Classic Reading" recommended reading books of Jiangsu National Reading Activity Leading Group celebrating the Centennial of the Founding of the Party, and Jintai Good Books of People's Daily Library.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disparities in regional development have been a crucial issue in China, and a central-to-local transfer payment practice has been introduced to promote equal public services. This paper uses a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) for China 2012 to analyze the impacts of an unequal intergovernmental transfer policy on regional and national economic performances. Simulations include the actual transfer payment plan in 2019 and a control group of equal allocation. The simulations show that the additional unequal transfer generally means higher sectoral output and higher regional output for less developed regions even as total national output remains similar. Future studies can conduct a more accurate study by adding institutional accounts and allowing for non-linearity through a social accounting matrix (SAM) or a computable general quilibrium (CGE) models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Input-output analysis is the main tool of applied equilibrium analysis. This textbook provides a systematic survey of the most recent developments in input-output analysis and their applications, helping us to examine questions such as: which industries are competitive? What are the multiplier effects of an investment program? How do environmental restrictions impact on prices? Linear programming and national accounting are introduced and used to resolve issues such as the choice of technique, the comparative advantage of a national economy, its efficiency and dynamic performance. Technological and environmental spillovers are analysed, both at the national level (between industries) and the international level (the measurement of globalisation effects). The book is self-contained, but assumes some familiarity with calculus, matrix algebra, and the microeconomic principle of optimizing behaviour. Exercises and review questions are included at the end of each chapter, and solutions at the end of the book.
