Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, a number of exhibitions about "Chinese contemporary art" started to take place outside China, mainly in the United States and European countries. These exhibitions resulted in the Western art world's increasing interest in China's seemingly "Westernized" and "politically provocative" artworks. Many Chinese artists, in turn, also made great fortune from their international debut. But it seems that since then, the Western perception of Chinese contemporary art has hardly changed or developed. The most selling works in the Western market are still the ones known as "Political Pop" and "Cynical Realism." And the artists who were first introduced to the West still leads the chart showing today's richest artists. To explain why, this thesis traces back to the beginning of the not-so-long history of Chinese contemporary art, looking at four major group exhibitions happened outside Mainland China in the 90s and 2000s, in order to reveal and highlight the curators' aims and purposes at different stages of contemporary Chinese state's development and thus their consequential influence on the art scene. Meanwhile, by looking at catalog essays, art criticism, and journalistic articles that have grown along with these exhibitions, this thesis also presents the Chinese and Western art world participants' active shaping of China's contemporary art scene.

To the extent that Chinese contemporary art has become a global phenomenon, it is largely through the groundbreaking exhibitions curated by Gao Minglu: "China/Avant-Garde" (Beijing, 1989), "Inside Out: New Chinese Art" (Asia Society, New York, 1998), and "The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art" (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, 2005) among them. As the first Chinese writer to articulate a distinctively Chinese avant-gardism and modernity—one not defined by Western chronology or formalism—Gao Minglu is largely responsible for the visibility of Chinese art in the global art scene today. Contemporary Chinese artists tend to navigate between extremes, either embracing or rejecting a rich classical tradition. Indeed, for Chinese artists, the term "modernity" refers not to a new epoch or aesthetic but to a new nation—modernityinextricably connects politics to art. It is this notion of "total modernity" that forms the foundation of the Chinese avant-garde aesthetic, and of this book.
