China's growing distant water fishing fleet is also one of the factors leading to China's efforts to build a blue water navy to safeguard China's maritime interests. However, it might also contribute to overfishing and illegal fishing which threatens the sustainability of the global fishing sector. If the structural shifts of China's fishing industry could be well managed, the fishing sector could be an ideal field for cooperation to achieve maritime safety and security at both regional and global levels.

The presence of the Chinese companies have resulted in drastic changes in the country's fisheries industry where they have a comparative advantage due to their geographic location. Through interviews conducted with Gambian officials in the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources, and members of the fishing community (both fishermen and merchants), I conclude that the Chinese presence is a trade-off between the Gambian government and the Chinese investors. It is positive because they are engaged in a beneficial partnership with the Gambian government where both sides can have long term benefits to their economic systems, and also negative because it has outcasted the older and less educated sect of the fishing community who cannot advance with the swiftly evolving and modernized fisheries industry of The Gambia. The Chinese presence in the Gambia and the rest of Africa has gained a lot of scrutiny due to the belief that their presence is a form of neocolonialism. The case of the Gambian fishing industry, however, reveals a different narrative. Chinese companies are aiding in the development of a major source of future economic growth for a developing nation, and they are operating under the regulations and guidelines set forth by the Gambian government. To sum it up, The Gambia is facilitating the creative destruction of their fisheries industry in order to gain long term economic strength and independence in the foreign trade market.

Book excerpt: Over the past fifteen years, the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) missile fast-attack craft and amphibious fleets have been significantly modernized. While these two types of vessels have not increased in numbers, their capabilities have increased exponentially. This publication examines the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) doctrine and training strategy in order to analyze present and predict future missions by these military vessels. China's deterrence posture is improved greatly by these ships and boats, which aid coastal water defense, and threaten Taiwanese attempts to gain independence. In addition, these two fleets improve China's long-range sealift capabilities, and help with the PLA's traditional, and new, nontraditional security practices. These fleets allow the PLAN to continue offshore operations, and begin "blue-water", or "far-seas" operations, helping the United States to predict the future nature of Chinese maritime missions.
