Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Basis of Cancer Chemotherapy focuses on methods and approaches in the treatment of cancer, including detection, chemotherapeutic agents, and hormonal therapy. The selection first offers information on the detection of anti-cancer agents through screening tests and extracellular factors affecting the response of tumors to chemotherapeutic agents. Discussions focus on induced and transplanted tumors, alkylating agents, anti-folics, rate of excretion, dosage regimen, and extra-cellular deactivation. The text then elaborates on intracellular factors influencing the response of tumors to chemotherapeutic agents and chemotherapy and immune reactions. The publication ponders on dose schedules and modes of administration of chemotherapeutic agents in man and the methodology of controlled clinical trials. Topics include toxicity study in animals and clinical pharmacology; classification of chemotherapeutic agents according to their mechanism of action; and classical methodology. The book also takes a look at the biological basis of hormonal therapy of cancer and chemotherapy in the strategy of cancer treatment. The selection is highly recommended for health professionals and readers interested in cancer chemotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were no medical oncologists until a few decades ago. In the early 1960s, not only were there no such specialists, many practitioners regarded the treatment of terminally-ill cancer patients with heroic courses of chemotherapy as highly questionable. Physicians loath to assign patients randomly to competing treatments also expressed their outright opposition to the randomized clinical trials that were then relatively rare. And yet today these trials form the basis of medical oncology. How did such a spectacular change occur? How did medical oncology move from a non-entity and in some regards a reviled practice to the central position it now occupies in modern medicine? Cancer on Trial answers these questions by exploring how practitioners established a new style of practice, at the center of which lies the cancer clinical trial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

Second, the body breaks down the food or drink into nutrients. Third, the nutrients travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body where they are used as "fuel" and for many other purposes. To give the body proper nutrition, a person has to eat and drink enough of the foods that contain key nutrients. This book examines new and important research in this field.
