Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally published as a Russian edition in mid-1968. It represented the first single-volume discussion of chemical pest control and of the detailed chemistry.of all modern pesticide chemicals since D. E. H. Frear's classical book on this same subject, first published in 1942 (van No strand) with the latest (third) edition in 1955. Since 1955 many new pesti cide chemicals have achieved commercial status, and many of the older ones have been supplanted. There is no up-to-date equivalent of this present volume in the world literature, with the exception of the encyclopedic and largely biologically oriented two-volume work "Chemie der Pflanzenschutz und Schadlingsbekampfungsmittel" (R. Wegler, ed.) published by Springer Verlag in 1970. Professor Melnikov has updated the 1968 Russian edition, with emphasis on the primary Russian sources yet with excellent world wide coverage of the latest chemicals to approach field stature in modern chemical pest control, for the present translation."

Book excerpt: Global pesticide use is currently estimated at approximately 2. 5 billion kg per year (Pimentel eta/. , 1998). To be effective, pesticides need to persist for a certain period of time. However, the longer their persistence, the greater the potential for transport of a fraction of the amount applied away from the target area. Pesticides are dispersed in the environment by water currents, wind, or biota. Pesticides can directly contaminate ground and surface waters by leaching, surface run-off and drift. Pesticides can also enter the atmosphere during application by evaporation and drift of small spray droplets, that remain airborne. Following application, pesticides may volatilise from the crop or the soil. Finally, wind erosion can cause soil particles and dust loaded with pesticides to enter the atmosphere. The extent to which pesticides enter the air compartment is dependent upon many factors: the properties of the substance in question (e. g. vapour pressure), the amount used, the method of application, the formulation, the weather conditions (such as wind speed, temperature, humidity), the nature of the crop and soil characteristics. Measurements at application sites reveal that sometimes more than half of the amount applied is lost into the atmosphere within a few days (Spencer and Cliath, 1990; Taylor and Spencer; 1990; Van den Berg et a/. , this issue).

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the major chemical aspects of pesticides giving detailed descriptions of the various groups of pesticides in current use - insecticides, acaricides, nematocides, rodenticides, fungicides and herbicides. The organic syntheses are discussed in detail, as are the biochemical aspects of the effectiveness and mechanisms of action of these chemical agents. The ecological aspects of the use of pesticides - nowadays an important consideration - are also discussed. The main trends of development in the field are also dealt with, e.g. the development of insecticides which present less of a threat to human beings and animals than the ones presently used, whose point of attack is the nervous system. Research is now concentrated on developing chemical compounds which affect the biochemistry or the special behavioural features of insects, instead of acting upon their nervous system. Newly discovered chemicals with selective action which are still in the developmental and experimentational stages are also described.Because of its comprehensive character, the book will be a useful source of information to those engaged in practical work in this field, as well as to researchers in the agricultural sciences.

Book excerpt: Pesticide Chemistry: Human Welfare and the Environment, Volume I: Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationships covers the proceedings of the Fifth International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry. The book covers research topics that tackle both improved agricultural production and public health concerns. The papers presented in this volume are organized into three parts. The first part covers the plenary lectures that discuss the political, economic, and philosophical aspects of pesticides for human welfare and pesticide research for the improvement of human welfare. The second part discusses synthesis of pesticides and growth regulators, which include synthons, avermegtins, and pyrethroid. The third part tackles chemical structure and biological activities, such as structure-activity relationships in derivatives of anticholinesterase insecticides and the fungicidal activity of acyl anilines. The book will be of great interest to professionals and researchers whose work involves pesticides.

It provides a comprehensive guide to the use of pesticides and the efforts of manufacturers to develop pesticides that are both effective and environmentally benign. The difficulties and hazards associated with their applications, their environmental effects, particularly in wate and the control of storage, uses and residue levels in non-agricultural habitat and in foodstuffs are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The chemical control of pests and diseases now encompasses many disciplines of science and technology, including chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, physics and ecology, This book provides a rare synthesis of information on the formulation, biochemistry, physiological effects and mode of action of all the major groups of pesticides, indicating why such matters are of importance in relation to the use of these substances in agriculture. The book begins with a description of the economic aspects of pesticides, their toxicology and the precautions relevant to their marketing and use. The various types of compounds employed and the physicochemical factors involved in their formulation are then discussed, followed by the biochemical principles of pesticide metabolism. The core of book consider the major groups of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. Organophorphorus, carbamate and pyrethroid insecticides are covered and the various compounds are grouped to illustrate the principles underlying persistence, selectivity and metabolism. Compounds with acaricidal, nematicidal and molluscicidal properties are considered more briefly. Systemic and non-systemic fungicides are dealt with and the basic principles of control of fungi are discussed. The advantages and limitations of pre-and post-emergence application of herbicides are considered. Finally details are given of the chemistry and uses of the major groups of foliar and soil-acting compounds. This book gives a comprehensive account of pesticides. It will be valuable not only to students the many aspects of pest controller.

Book excerpt: That residues of pesticide and other contaminants in the total environ ment are of concern to everyone everywhere is attested by the reception accorded previous volumes of "Residue Reviews" and by the gratifying enthusiasm, sincerity, and efforts shown by all the individuals from whom manuscripts have been solicited. Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food-additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manu facture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those that persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established ones are continually being displaced by newly developed ones more acceptable to food technologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-con trol requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of govern mental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of these chemicals persisting into our food stuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judg ments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biol ogical, chemical, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxi cological disciplines.
