Book excerpt: This is a moving tale about mid-19th century Poland, based on the experiences of the author's forebears, during the time when her country was under the yoke of Tsarist oppression. The story is about a young noblewoman, Kamila, in the struggle to retain her inheritance, following the arrest and deportation of her parents to Siberia following their involvement in the struggle for Poland's freedom. The novel opens in the Eastern half of the country with the execution of her two brothers during that year of European revolutions of 1848. With the deportation of her parents two years later - and from whom she was never to hear again - her aunt marries her off to an only surviving son, Karol, on his deathbed, to ensure that her property would not also be confiscated. On the death of Karol from consumption, Kamila, who is still in her teens, is obliged to take over the management of the estate, and when shortly thereafter her aunt dies also, she is left without relatives for the guidance of her life ahead. The story then follows her trials and tribulations, including the malice of a dismissed employee who makes an attempt on her life. She is forced to learn quickly about the ways of the world, and through the support of old and new friendships, she triumphs over adversity, and the fact-based story concludes with a happy ending. The book presents a vivid picture of provincial Poland in the 19th century, and is a gripping read for enthusiasts of the realistic-romantic genre.

Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Siberia examines the developments in the different sectors of Siberian economy and discusses the role of this vast and little-known region in the Soviet Union’s overall economic and defence strategy. It surveys historical developments and the geography of the region and focuses on the key problem areas such as manpower shortage, the difficulties involved in exploiting the territory’s natural resources, internal communications – including the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway in the Far East- and considers Siberia’s place in the context of international relations and the world economy. This book is a must read for scholars of Russian history, Russian geopolitics, European politics, international relations and European history.

Book excerpt: Russia is a huge storehouse of natural resources, including oil, gas, and other energy sources, which she can trade with the rest of the world for advanced technology and wheat. In this book, leading experts evaluate the Soviet potential in major energy and industrial raw materials, giving special attention to implications for the world economy to the end of the twentieth century. The authors examine the mineral and forest resources that the Soviet Union has developed and may yet develop to provide exports during the 1980s. They discuss the regional dimension of these resources, especially in Siberia and the Soviet Far East; individual mineral raw materials, such as petroleum, natural gas, timber, iron ore, manganese, and gold; and finally the role of raw materials in Soviet foreign trade. The authors, representing the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, are primarily geographers, but they include economists, political scientists, and a geologist. Their work is based on primary sources (for most of these reports, current information is no longer being released to researchers) and on interviews with Soviet officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan’s March 11, 2011 triple horror of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown is its worst catastrophe since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Recovery remains an ongoing ordeal. Japan's Responses to the March 2011 Disaster: Our Inescapable In-between uncovers the pivotal role of longstanding cultural worldviews and their impact on responses to this gut-wrenching disaster. Through unpacking the pivotal notion in Japanese ethics of aidagara, or “in-betweenness,” it offers testament to a deep-rooted sense of community. Accounts from survivors, victims’ families, key city officials, and volunteers reveal a remarkable fiber of moral grit and resilience that sustains Japan’s common struggle to rally and carve a future with promise and hope. Calamities snatch us out of the mundane and throw us into the intensity of the moment. They challenge our moral fiber. Trauma, individual and collective, is the uninvited litmus test of character, personal and social. Ultimately, whether a society rightfully recovers from disaster has to do with its degree of connectedness, the embodied physical, interpersonal, face-to-face engagement we have with each other. As these stories bring to light, along with Michael Brannigan’s extensive research, personal encounters with survivors, and experience as a volunteer in Japan’s stricken areas, our degree of connectedness determines how we in the long run weather the storm, whether the storm is natural, technological, or human. Ultimately, it illustrates that how we respond to and recover after the storm hinges upon how we are with each other before the storm.
