Book excerpt: Scientific work on mnemonics and imagery conducted in the 1960s and early 1970s was directed at testing enthusiastic claims of the efficacy of memory tech niques developed by the ancient Greeks and further refined in the popular litera ture by "professional" mnemonists. The early research on imagery and mnemonics confirmed many of these claims and also illuminated the limitations of some techniques (e. g. , bizarre imagery). As such, these seminal studies clearly were valuable in providing a solid data base and, perhaps as important, making imagery and mnemonics acceptable research areas for experimental psycholo gists and educators. After this initial surge of work, however, it seemed that sub sequent contributions met with the attitude that "mnemonic techniques and imagery help memory, what else is new?" This attitude was not completely justi fied, however, given the theoretical insights from the work of such imagery and mnemonics pioneers as Gorden Bower, Allan Paivio, and William Rohwer. In the 1980s this claim is completely unjustified. Research on mnemonics and imagery has grown in exciting ways. Researchers are tapping the area's theoretical potential, both in terms of extending basic memory theories to account for the robust effects produced by mnemonic techniques and in terms of using explanations of mnemonic effects to understand basic memory processes. Individual differences in the use of imagery and mnemonic encoding activities are also being explored. This research has provided valuable information for basic memory theories (e. g.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though I had been studying reading problems in children for a number of years as a means of understanding cognitive processes, I became deeply committed to the study of developmental dyslexia after my encounter with S. H. , a dyslexic college student. Until then, dyslexia to me remained an interesting phenomenon but somewhat removed from the mainstream of my research interests. The facts that, in spite of his superior IQ, S. H. could read no better than a child in the fifth grade and misspelled even common words such as was and here, however, took me by surprise and made me appreciate the intriguing and challenging nature of developmental dyslexia. This led to a series of studies of college students with reading disability, a group that is relatively unexplored. The general plan of these investigations was to study a small number of disabled readers at any given time, rather intensively. Even though this approach limits the generalizability of the research findings, it lays bare some of the most interesting facts about dyslexia which are obscured in large-scale statistical studies. These studies have now extended well over a decade and are still continuing. As soon as these studies were started, it became obvious that not all reading-disabled college students are alike and that disabled readers could be classified into three broad categories: those with poor decod ing skill, those with poor comprehension ability, and those with a combination of these two deficits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consistent with previous editions, this book assembles in a single volume summaries of the treatment literature and treatment procedures of the most common childhood behavior disorders facing persons who practice in applied settings--clinics, schools, counseling centers, psychiatric hospitals, and residential treatment centers. Its 16 chapters cover the historical context of child and adolescent therapy; obsessive compulsive disorders; childhood depression; childhood fears, phobias and related anxieties; attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; academic problems; conduct disorder; somatic disorders; autism spectrum disorder; intellectual disabilities; children medically at risk; sexual and other abuse of children; child and adolescent psychopharmacotherapy; prevention; and child therapy and the law. Key features include: Treatment Orientation--Although some chapters include a discussion of theoretical issues, the primary emphasis is on intervention techniques and strategies for changing various behavior and learning problems. Case examples are often used to illustrate treatment procedures. Empirical Orientation--While most authors have adopted a broad-based behavioral or cognitive-behavioral orientation, they were encouraged to review the entire treatment literature and to construct their presentations on the basis of empirically supported treatment techniques and procedures. Psychopharmacotherapy Chapter--The chapter on child and adolescent psychopharmacotherapy focuses on psychopharmacological interventions rather than on which drugs should be prescribed for specific behavior or learning problems. Author Expertise--Each chapter is written by experts who are well qualified to discuss treatment practices for the specific topic under discussion. This book is intended for individuals who have entered or plan to enter the mental health profession or such related professions as counseling, special education, nursing and rehabilitation. It is especially useful for individuals taking child and adolescent therapy and intervention courses and practicum courses. Finally, it is suitable for persons who work in applied settings including clinics, schools, counseling centers, psychiatric hospitals, and residential treatment centers.

Book excerpt: "In 1997, Congress asked the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read. The panel was charged with providing a report that should present the panel's conclusions, an indication of the readiness for application in the classroom of the results of this research, and, if appropriate, a strategy for rapidly disseminating this information to facilitate effective reading instruction in the schools" -- p. 1-1.
