Galactic Co-ordinator Kimball Kinnison finished his second cup of Tellurian coffee, got up from the breakfast table, and prowled about in black abstraction. Twenty-odd years had changed him but little. He weighed the same, or a few pounds less; although a little of his mass had shifted downward from his mighty chest and shoulders. His hair was still brown, his stern face was only faintly lined. He was mature, with a conscious maturity which no young man can know.

Book excerpt: In Life Lens: Seeing Your Children in Color, author and celebrated Suzuki music instructor Michele Monahan Horner presents a trailblazing model that will identify your students' unique learning needs and make your teaching easier and a whole lot more fun. The Life Lens method analyzes each individual through the power of observation. By simply watching your children, you will quickly be able to learn their best learning style, thinking process, pace preference, relationship to time, and what most motivates them. Life Lens is a system that breaks down a child's interior landscape into seven different colors. Far from typecasting, the foundation of the Life Lens method is respectful recognition of individuals' hardwired differences and learning how to work with those differences by meeting those individuals where they are most ready to learn. Below are just a few people who will benefit from the Life Lens model: Parents, Educators, Social Workers, Guidance Counselors, Human Resources Professionals, Coaches, Business Owners, Life Lens principles apply universally across all ages, classroom groups, and with non-musicians. By using Life Lens, you will be able to home in on the most effective strategies to communicate with and help your students learn. Parents will learn how to eliminate hidden relationship stressors so that practice or homework time will be happier and more productive. After reading Life Lens, you will never see the world in black and white again. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The enemy spacefleet arrowed toward the armored mountain-nerve center of the Galactic Patrol. The Patrol battle cruisers swerved to meet them, and a miles-long cone of pure energy ravened out at the invaders, destroying whatever it touched. But the moment before the force beam struck, thousands of tiny objects dropped from the enemy fleet and, faster than light, flashed straight at their target-each one an atom bomb powerful enough to destroy Patrol Headquarters by itself! The Galactic Patrol-and civilization itself-had seconds to live. Unless a miracle happened.... **

The Boskonians are the most feared pirates in the galaxy. Their ships are much faster than almost anything the Galactic Patrol posses. The one exception is their new experimental ship the Britannia. Built to be the fastest ship in space, she has abandoned the traditional ray armament of a star ship for weapons much older - explosive artillery. Her mission is to capture a Boskonian ship intact so that the Lensman my find the secret to the Boskonin phenomenal speed. The experimental nature of the Britannia’s weapon means that she would be useless to a man experienced only in using the standard weapons of the time, so she is given to the inexperienced Kinnison to command and a legend is born!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neal "Storm" Cloud failed his Lensman exam, But life has a strange way of making heroes of even those who sometimes fail. Cloud's family is tragically killed when a misguided attempt to blow out a vortex lands one of the fragments right on his house. Devastated by the loss of his family, Cloud takes a leave of absence from the Radiation Lab where he works studying the vortices. As he drives he is struck with an idea for "blowing out" a vortex. It is slightly technical (Smith explains it so it can be easily followed), but the general idea is that Cloud's brain works so fast that he can calculate exactly where the center of the vortex will be at a moment in time and how big an explosive is needed, then hit it with a bomb that is set at the exact strength to actually extinguish the vortex instead of blowing it apart and making more vortices. As it continues the book tells of Cloud's new job as the universe's one and only vortex blaster. This job takes him from planet to planet where he blows out vortices, matches wits against drug dealers and gangsters, meets new life forms, and acquires a crew for his small scout ship. His adventures are many and varied, and the lifeforms he meets are strange and interesting.

Book excerpt: Hundreds of millions of years ago, two near-omnipotent alien races encountered each other, beginning a conflict that will shape the history of the entire universe. The benevolent Arisians covertly influence humanity, hoping to create a people capable of one day defeating the vile Eddorians, who are waging their own campaign for the fate of civilization on Earth. This sets the stage for a clash between the Triplanetary League of the inner solar system, the enigmatic pirate-scientist Roger, and the Nevians, interlopers whose first appearance wreaks havoc among the other parties. Triplanetary is the first of Edward E. “Doc” Smith’s Lensman series, an early and influential entry in the space opera genre. Originally serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934 as a stand-alone story, Triplanetary was collected in book form in 1948 with six new chapters and numerous additions, changing the story to be a prequel to the rest of the Lensman series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, interactive approach to storytime, The Whole Book Approach was developed in conjunction with the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and expert author Megan Dowd Lambert's graduate work in children's literature at Simmons College, offering a practical guide for reshaping storytime and getting kids to think with their eyes. Traditional storytime often offers a passive experience for kids, but the Whole Book approach asks the youngest of readers to ponder all aspects of a picture book and to use their critical thinking skills. Using classic examples, Megan asks kids to think about why the trim size of Ludwig Bemelman's Madeline is so generous, or why the typeset in David Wiesner's Caldecott winner,The Three Pigs, appears to twist around the page, or why books like Chris Van Allsburg's The Polar Express and Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar are printed landscape instead of portrait. The dynamic discussions that result from this shared reading style range from the profound to the hilarious and will inspire adults to make children's responses to text, art, and design an essential part of storytime.

Book excerpt: “A rich exploration of sci-fi universes we know and love, merged flawlessly with discussions on leadership, national security . . . diplomacy, and more.” —Diplomatic Courier As a literature of ideas, science fiction has proven to be a powerful metaphor for the world around us, offering a rich tapestry of imagination through which to explore how we lead, how we think, and how we interact. To Boldly Go assembles more than thirty writers from around the world—experts in leadership and strategy, senior policy advisors and analysts, professional educators and innovators, experienced storytellers, and ground-level military leaders—to help us better understand ourselves through the lens of science fiction Each chapter of To Boldly Go draws out the lessons that we can learn from science fiction, drawing on classic examples of the genre in ways that are equally relatable and entertaining. A chapter on the burdens of leadership by Ghost Fleet author August Cole launches readers into the cosmos with Captain Avatar aboard the space battleship Yamato. In another chapter, the climactic Battle of the Mutara Nebula from The Wrath of Khan weighs the advantages of experience over intelligence in the pursuit of strategy. What does inter-species conflict in science fiction tell us about our perspectives on social Darwinism? Whether using Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to explore the nuances of maritime strategy or The Expanse to better understand the threat posed by depleted natural resources, To Boldly Go provides thoughtful essays on relevant subjects that will appeal to business leaders, military professionals, and fans of science fiction alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume nineteen biblical scholars collaborate to provide an informed and focused treatment of biblical perspectives on children and childhood. Looking at the Bible through the "lens" of the child exposes new aspects of biblical texts and themes. Some of the authors focus on selected biblical texts -- Genesis, Proverbs, Mark, and more -- while others examine such biblical themes as training and disciplining, children and the image of God, the metaphor of Israel as a child, and so on. In discussing a vast array of themes and questions, the chapters also invite readers to reconsider the roles that children can or should play in religious communities today. Book excerpt: We may see Planet Earth as an unchanging, timeless home for mankind, yet in the past century mankind has changed Planet Earth in profound and dangerous ways. In Through the Lens of Reality, Minnesota author Jerry Rabe offers his keen insight on the unique challenges we all now face--the population explosion, global warming, and energy needs; our nation's troubled financial affairs; and the realization that a billion people on Planet Earth struggle to survive while trapped in abject poverty. "I am acutely aware that I am a very small voice in a vast desert," Rabe writes. "Yet [I hope] that every parent, every politician, and everyone who cares about human existence reads this book, because I believe it contains a message that is essential to the survival of society as we now know it." Rabe's message is one of "hope and love and possibilities," but it's also a disturbing message; it is, he cautions us, "an all-important wake-up call... about you and me and our future. ..."

Book excerpt: It's vital that we support young children's reading in ways that nurture healthy reading identities, that foster an attraction to books and a love of reading, and that teach them how make meaning in any text they choose, whether or not they can read the words. -Kathy Collins and Matt Glover What do we see when young children interact with books before they can read the words? Kathy Collins and Matt Glover see real reading, characterized by purposeful meaning-making and opportunities for reading growth and language development. "One of our biggest hopes," write Kathy and Matt, "is to help you see and value all of the powerful work young children do as readers." With I Am Reading you'll see that fostering what little ones do before they can read the words is important early instruction. Kathy and Matt show how to nurture, nudge, and instruct young readers to make meaning in any text, whether or not they are reading the words. They share: observation guides for children reading any kind of book specific descriptions of language and independence development sample reading conferences and whole-class minilessons suggestions for creating reading opportunities in preschool and reading workshops in K-1 action plans to get you going 25 online video clips of children making meaning and teachers supporting them. I Am Reading pairs two important voices in early literacy to remind us that we're teaching children, not reading levels. "In the rush toward ever higher reading levels in the early years," write Kathy and Matt, "we may fail to value the strategy use and high-level thinking children do before they are reading conventionally." Join Kathy and Matt and look anew at your young readers so you can provide the kind of support that gets them off to a great start.
