Book excerpt: From The New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for Sale comes the moving and powerful story of a small town after a devastating avalanche, and the life changing effects it has on the people who live there Whiter Than Snow opens in 1920, on a spring afternoon in Swandyke, a small town near Colorado's Tenmile Range. Just moments after four o'clock, a large split of snow separates from Jubilee Mountain high above the tiny hamlet and hurtles down the rocky slope, enveloping everything in its path including nine young children who are walking home from school. But only four children survive. Whiter Than Snow takes you into the lives of each of these families: There's Lucy and Dolly Patch—two sisters, long estranged by a shocking betrayal. Joe Cobb, Swandyke's only black resident, whose love for his daughter Jane forces him to flee Alabama. There's Grace Foote, who hides secrets and scandal that belies her genteel façade. And Minder Evans, a civil war veteran who considers his cowardice his greatest sin. Finally, there's Essie Snowball, born Esther Schnable to conservative Jewish parents, but who now works as a prostitute and hides her child's parentage from all the world. Ultimately, each story serves as an allegory to the greater theme of the novel by echoing that fate, chance, and perhaps even divine providence, are all woven into the fabric of everyday life. And it's through each character's defining moment in his or her past that the reader understands how each child has become its parent's purpose for living. In the end, it's a novel of forgiveness, redemption, survival, faith and family.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Storm The autumn sun had just shown above the horizon, and behind the stark, black stems of the forest trees glimmered an unearthly fire. The very mystery of life itself was in the chill, sweet air, and the two hushed their voices so that they sounded scarcely louder than the rustle of the fallen leaves under their feet and the drowsy stirring of the unseen, living things about them. Book excerpt: Storm in the night. Thunder like mountains blowing up. Lightning licking the navy-blue sky. Rain streaming down the windows, babbling in the downspouts. And Grandfather? . . . And Thomas? . . . And Ringo, the cat? They were in the dark. Too early to go to bed, and with only flashes of lightning to see by, Thomas and his grandfather happily find themselves re-discovering the half-forgotten scents and sounds of their world, and having a wonderful time learning important, new things about each other in a spirited conversation sparked by darkness. Mary Stolz and Pat Cummings have each brought their unique talents to this lyrical tale about a magical, stormy night and a special relationship.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The forcible separation of Black children from their parents was first used as a means of controlling Black families in the United States over 400 years ago as a practice of human chattel slavery. This practice of forcibly and involuntary separating Black children from their families was used by the state as a means of maintaining power and control by a system of White supremacy that is foundational to this country's origins. This foundation was firmly established hundreds of years earlier through the philosophy of settler colonialism upon which the United States began. This philosophy required both the removal and dispossession of the Indigenous population from their land, which included the separation of children from their families, and the importation of forced labor to work in and profit from the land. The philosophy of settler colonialism also firmly established the White settler, and thus Whiteness, as the normalized identity of those who would become citizens of the United States-with all others established as the "Other," disposable and exploitable, whether indigenous or enslaved. This legacy of violence and exploitation that began through settler colonialism and continued through human chattel slavery laid the foundation for the violence and exploitation that occurs today through the modern child welfare system"--
