Book excerpt: Annually, more than 15 million U.S. children witness intimate partner violence (IPV) in their homes between caregivers. Witnessing IPV during childhood has been associated with increased risk of adulthood IPV victimization, although this relationship has most commonly been examined among older populations of white adults (McKinney, Caetano, Ramisetty-Mikler, & Nelson, 2009; Straus, 1989; Whitfield, Anda, Dube, & Felitti, 2003), not minority women who experience a disproportionately high burden of IPV victimization (Breiding, Chen, & Black, 2014). It also is unclear whether there are specific characteristics of childhood witnessing of IPV that may aid in understanding the increased probability of IPV victimization observed among young, minority women. This study examined associations between four characteristics of childhood witnessing of IPV (direction of violence witnessed, academic disruption, fearfulness, and frequency) and adulthood physical and sexual IPV victimization. Further, psychosocial moderators of these associations were examined. Existing data collected from 315 women residing in North Philadelphia were analyzed. Overall, 28% of women witnessed IPV during childhood and nearly one in four women reported IPV victimization. Among these women there was diversity with regards to the characteristics of witnessing reported. Unadjusted associations observed that women who witnessed bidirectional IPV, experienced academic disruption, or reported fearful witnessing were significantly more likely to experience adulthood IPV victimization than women who did not witness IPV during childhood. After adjusting for covariates, these witnessing characteristics were no longer significantly associated with adulthood IPV victimization; however, the risk of adulthood IPV victimization was consistently related to current depressive symptoms and substance use. Modest support for effect modification by low self-esteem was observed. A significant difference in the predicted probability of adulthood IPV victimization was observed among women reporting bidirectional childhood witnessing of IPV and high self-esteem in adulthood compared to women reporting bidirectional witnessing and low self-esteem (difference=0.51, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.95, p=0.027). Childhood abuse was associated with greater probability of adulthood IPV victimization regardless of the frequency of childhood witnessing of IPV (aOR=5.8, 95% CI: 2.2, 13.6). Given the high prevalence of childhood witnessing of IPV observed in this study, these findings highlight the importance of screening for childhood IPV witnessing. In addition, these results suggest particular groups of urban women who may be at highest risk for adulthood IPV victimization, including those experiencing depressive symptoms, substance use, and a history of childhood abuse. Identifying adolescents and young adults with these characteristics and providing early prevention services may reduce the probability of future IPV victimization among young, sexually active urban women. Additionally, examining the role of low self-esteem during child- and adulthood may inform efforts to prevent IPV victimization. These findings highlight the need for prospective, longitudinal studies of urban children and adolescents to examine the complex causal pathways between childhood witnessing of IPV, psychosocial characteristics, and adulthood IPV victimization.

Studies examining IPV during young adulthood, the life stage associated with high rates of both childbearing and experiences with intimate partner violence, do not emphasize the presence of children as a risk factor. Furthermore, much prior IPV scholarship that has examined motherhood focuses on pregnancy or child outcomes. In this dissertation I examined self-reports of intimate partner violence among women who were mothers and non-mothers. I drew on the stress process literature to explain the relationship between the presence of children and IPV. Using survey data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (n = 1,321), I focused on young adult women’s reports of physical and psychological violence in their current or most recent relationship. Unlike many other studies of mothers, I examined mutual violence, the most common form among young adults. First, I analyzed the association between motherhood status and intimate partner violence, and focused on the presence of children as a possible stressor. Second, I assessed a sense of mattering as a stress and coping mechanism in the relationship between motherhood status and relationship aggression. Third, I assessed among young adult mothers, contested domains (i.e., fidelity concerns, economic issues, peer-partner balance and family life) associated with relationship aggression. I also examined whether social psychological stresses (i.e., parenting stress and resentments) mediated the relationship between contested domains and relationship aggression. I found mothers with two or more children compared with non-mothers reported more frequent relationship aggression, suggesting having two or more children in a relationship may be a stressor. Second, high levels of mattering are associated with less frequent relationship aggression indicating mattering is a psychosocial resource for young women. Lastly, contested domains are stressors in young women’s relationships and are associated positively with relationship aggression. Parenting stress and resentments did not reduce the effect of contested domains on relationship aggression, suggesting that issues surrounding intimate partners remain stressful even though children are an important aspect of the association. This dissertation speaks to the stress process model and relationship aggression among young adult women.

The work funded under this National Institute of Justice award combined a prospective longitudinal component on how developmental risk factors in childhood predicted IPV in young adulthood with a proximal component on how concurrent contextual risk factors were related to IPV. Study Aims were tested using data collected over a 15-year period. Secondary analyses with 323 young adults (184 women, 139 men; average age 21 years) and their romantic partners (146 women, 177 men; average age 22 years) participating in the community-based Linking the Interests of Families and Teachers (LIFT) Study were conducted to examine pathways (i.e., prospective mediational models) predictive of IPV. The models were based on Dynamic Developmental Systems theory, which specifies how family, peers, and adolescent adjustment factors, and how couple and young adult adjustment factors (proximal associations), are related to IPV. The long-term impacts of the LIFT preventive intervention, which was intended to prevent aggression during and following elementary school. on IPV were also examined.

Book excerpt: Past research has examined the phenomenon of intimate partner violence (IPV), with recent increased focus on IPV among adolescents and young adults. Moreover, prior work examining IPV among young adults often looks at familial factors such as child maltreatment, and current relationship dynamics such as jealousy and control, but does not consider these two domains simultaneously. This is potentially problematic, as individuals' relationships in multiple domains are affected by their socialization experiences within the family. Relatedly, research examining family effects on IPV often focus solely on childhood maltreatment and interparental aggression, failing to include other meaningful aspects of family life, such as the parent-child relationship. Finally, while trajectory analyses have been conducted in the past, most are confined to IPV occurring among older adults. Given the highly fluid and complex nature of adolescence and young adulthood, the examination of IPV across time may be especially insightful during these stages of the life course. Using five waves of longitudinal data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS), the current project relies on social learning and life course theories to investigate the antecedents and trajectories of adolescent and young adult experiences with IPV perpetration and victimization. Results from fixed-effects, random-effects and growth-curve analyses indicate both parental violence (i.e. child maltreatment) and parentchild relationship quality (PCRQ) are significant and independent predictors of IPV reports. Interestingly, though, both parental violence and PCRQ are more predictive of males' experiences with IPV than females'. Findings also demonstrate that as jealousy and control, cheating, verbal aggression, arguments, and partner mistrust increase in frequency or severity, so too does the likelihood of both IPV perpetration and victimization. However, contributing to previous research, this dissertation shows the effects of these relationship dynamics on IPV are contingent on individuals' familial background. In particular, the effects of verbal aggression and cheating on IPV are greater among those individuals who also experience parental violence. Finally, results demonstrate the trajectories of both IPV perpetration and victimization are nonlinear over time, mimicking the general age-crime curve. The shape of these trajectories, however, is further affected by poor PCRQ, which leads to a pronounced increase in the risk of IPV over time. Consequently, analyses show parental violence, parent-child relationship quality, current relationship dynamics, and the stage of the life course under examination all need to be considered in the prediction of IPV. It is thus suggested an integrated theoretical approach, as opposed to a singular theory, may provide the best framework to understand romantic relationship violence. Policy implications for both perpetrators and victims of violence, child welfare agencies, and educational practitioners are discussed.
