Six participants were interviewed, all of whom were registered through the University Accessibility Center at a four-year university and were served at some point during their school years for a learning disability. Interviews were held in a confidential location and lasted approximately thirty minutes. The interview protocol was constructed in a way that allowed participants to reflect on their experiences and tell their story in their own manner. Planned prompts were included to solicit more information as needed. The interviews were digitally recorded using an Ipod recorder and transcribed using NVivo 8 software. Investigators used thematic analysis to identify themes or patterns in the data, analyzed the themes, and reported the results based on their interpretation of the themes. In this approach, the data drove the interpretation rather than attempting to fit the data into the investigators' existing beliefs or interests. Four major themes emerged from the data analysis. Two themes centered on family factors that influenced college enrollment. These themes included parent support during school years and family involvement with college enrollment. Participants described the supportive relationship they had with their parents and the underlying feelings of support that always existed in their homes. They also reported their family's tradition of college attendance and parent expectations to attend college as significant factors in their own college enrollment. The other two themes relate to participants' feelings and beliefs about their disabilities. These themes include the impact of the disability on the individuals' sense of self-worth and personal strengths that contributed to success. Participants reported experiencing a lack of understanding about their disability. They recalled comparing themselves to their peers and not knowing how to explain their learning challenges to others. Despite their frustrations, participants made personal contributions to their own success. These contributions included the use of coping strategies and a determination to succeed. The individuals' use of coping strategies created an opportunity to experience success in the school setting, thereby increasing their motivation to continue their education after high school.

Parents sometimes become quite involved with a student's college education, a phenomenon that is beginning to get significant attention in the student development and higher education literature (Wartman & Savage, 2008). When students who have documented learning disabilities enroll in college, the concerns of family members can be even greater (Brinkerhoff, 2002). The purpose of this study was to investigate identity development in college students who have language-based learning disabilities. This study utilized the method of multiple case study design (six cases). Each case involved a student attending the Program for the Advancement of Learning (PAL) at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts, and a family member of the student's choice. Eighteen interviews were conducted - two with each student and one with each family member. The study also included four home visits with family members. Voice-centered method (Gilligan, 2003) of analysis was used and "I-Poems," constructed from each student interview, were shared with students in the final interview. Results from this study support modifications to both Tanner's (2006, 2010) and Baxter Magolda's (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010) models of identity development. Findings from this study have implications both for services offered to students with learning differences and for the approach colleges take in responding to their family members. - Abstract

The findings, placed in the context of previous research into college success for students with learning disabilities, enabled recognition of a success model with five overarching themes: A.A higher education institution committed to access and retention for disadvantaged students, reflected in a mission statement that included outreach to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, B. The availability of student support services on campus, C.A social safety net to compensate for low income (specifically, the state vocational rehabilitation agency), D. The support and advocacy of family and teachers, and E.A core of character strengths (specifically, persistence, optimism, and gratitude). Implications and recommendations for future research were discussed.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors within the student-parent relationship that influence college enrollment among this group of potential first-generation college students. ELS:2002 parent and student questionnaire data were used. The nationally representative sample of N=1607 students from families with no college experience were evaluated based on: race, SES, mathematics and reading test composite scores, family composition, parental expectations, college discussions between student and parent, parental effort to save for expected post-secondary costs, and parental involvement in high school course selection aimed at college matriculation. Two logistic regression models were used to determine which factors influenced college enrollment. Results indicated that college discussions between parent and child were the strongest predictor of college enrollment among first-generation students. Parental expectations and student composite test scores were also found to be statistically significant. Implications and the practical significance of the findings are discussed.
