Excerpt: ... worshipped and have sacrifices offered to it, and this could only be done by one of the same generation as himself The council of the imperial family met at night within one of the palace chambers, and they decided that a little boy, about three and a half years of age, should be chosen Emperor. The child was the son of Prince Chung, the seventh son of the Emperor Tau-Kwang, and the brother of Hien-Feng. The little Emperor was sent for immediately, tired and sleepy as he was, and placed in the midst of his uncles, who all did homage to him. The first consequence of the act by which the baby-boy Tsaitien was changed into the Emperor Kwang-Su, or "Illustrious Successor," was the retirement of his father from public life, since, according to Chinese ideas, it was quite impossible for a father to do homage to his own son. But even this matter had to be arranged in what seems to Europeans a very round-about way. The Emperor's father sent up a memorial to the two Dowager Empresses--for these ladies now undertook the care of Kwang-Su, as they had previously done of his predecessor. Prince Chung described the agony of grief into which he was thrown when called upon to gaze upon the features of the departed Emperor. But he was even more overwhelmed by the news that his own son had been chosen to succeed to the throne. He was carried home as one bereft of reason, he was attacked by many diseases, and begged to be allowed to spend the remnant of his miserable life in the seclusion of his own home, entreating the Empresses to withdraw his double allowance as an Imperial Prince. This memorial, which reads so strangely to English ears, seemed quite correct and proper to the educated Chinese, and appeared in the pages of the court newspaper. Eeferences...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Boy and Girl NO thorough study of Chinese child life can be made until the wall of Chinese exclusiveness is broken down and the homes of the East are thrown open to the people of the West. Glimpses of that life however, are available, suffi cient in number and character to give a fairly good idea of what it must be. The playground is by no means always hidden, least of all when it is the street. The Chinese nurse brings her Chinese rhymes, stories and games into the foreigner's home for the amusement of its little ones. Chinese kindergarten methods and appliances have no superior in their ingenuity and their ability to interest, as well as instruct. In the matter of travelling shows and jugglers also, no country is better supplied, and these are chiefly for the entertainment of the little ones. When I arrived there, how extraordinary the little pig-tailed boys and small-footed girls looked to me, and how much I wished to be able to understand them when they were chattering away to each other in words which sounded so strange to me! After a while I learned to speak to them in their own language. They would follow me in large numbers along the narrow streets, and gather round me wonderingly as I sat down on the green slopes of their city wall. By and by some of them came to our schools, and became very well known to me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Jon L. Saari defines the generation of educated Chinese born around the turn of the twentieth century as "the last to have the world of Confucian learning etched into their memories as schoolboys, yet the first as a group to confront the intrusive Western world." The legacies of growing up in a changing environment deeply affected this generation's responses to the further changes in the world they confronted as adults. In the collapse of the Ch'ing dynasty and the chaos of the early twentieth century, traditional ideas of the self, the nature of relationships in society, and ethical behavior had to be reexamined and redefined. To reconstruct what those who lived through and shaped this extraordinary period felt, needed, thought, and became as children and adults, Saari draws on autobiographical writings and his own interviews among the elderly on Taiwan and Hong Kong. He interprets this material within its Chinese context but brings Western sociological, anthropological, and psychological insights to bear on it.

This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vital addition to Springer’s ‘Educating the Young Child’ series addresses gaps in the literature on father involvement in the lives of young children, a topic with a fast-rising profile in today’s world of female breadwinners and single-parent households. While the significant body of theoretical understanding and empirical data accumulated in recent decades has done much to characterize the fluidity of evolving notions of fatherhood, the impact of this understanding on policy and legal frameworks has been uneven at an international level. In a field where groups of fathers were until recently marginalized in research, this book adopts a refreshingly inclusive attitude, aiming to motivate researchers to capture the nuanced practices of fathers in minority groups such as those who are homeless, gay, imprisoned, raising a disabled child, or from ethnically distinct backgrounds, including Mexican- and African-American and indigenous fathers. The volume includes chapters highlighting the unique challenges and possibilities of father involvement in their children’s early years of development. Contributing authors have integrated theories, research, policies, and programs on father involvement so as to attract readers with diverse interest and expertise, and material from selected countries in Asia, Australia, and Africa, as well as North America, evinces the international scope of their analysis. Their often interdisciplinary analyses draw, too, on historical and cultural legacies, even as they project a vision of the future in which fathers’ involvement in their young children’s lives develops alongside the changing political, economic and educational landscapes around the world.
