Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does God hate me? How can I believe in a God who has allowed my suffering? These are just two of the difficult spiritual questions that survivors of child sexual abuse struggle with. In addition, survivors often have mixed feelings about thechurch because of perceived judgment and indifference, their own shame, or their discomfort with certain aspects of worship. Of the many after-effects of sexual abuse, spiritual wounds are the least talked about, yet they are central to adult survivors who seek to heal and find faith and meaning in their lives. With grace and gentleness, this book seeks to answer survivors' spiritual questions and address some of the common misconceptions that often develop when young victims attempt to understand what has happened to them. Healing the Ravaged Soul explores the origins of their spiritual issues with clear psychological insights and guides survivors on a spiritual journey toward healing, wholeness, and a deeper relationship with God.

Dr. Tina Medina takes the young reader on a journey to learn about "The Trinity Team" of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to educate he or she about spiritual inner healing, writing therapy and prayer. The reader also discovers a new vocabulary to build up their confidence and how to express themselves in prayer so he or she can learn to communicate with Jesus about all of their concerns. The Biblical story of David and Goliath is shared as well as lessons about faith, restoration, love and peace. This colorful book contains many graphics which allows the young reader to gain a visual perspective about all of the topics in the book. The book is very easy to read and understand for ages 5-12. It flows in an order which creates a well balanced storyline so the interest of the reader is always wondering what am I going to learn next. The beauty of the book is that it is written in a caring, compassionate, and loving manner which is just what a young sexual abuse victim needs to heal and become a victor like young David when he dealt with his big obstacle, Goliath. The most important element that the reader walks away with is knowing it was never his or her fault and they did nothing wrong at all, but God can and will fully restore and make the pain go away forever.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the brave souls who have broken their silence and stopped the cycle of abuse and to those who helped them find their way to recovery. We know that 1 out of 3 and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18. 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way or another. They are often afraid to self disclose the abuse because they believe they will hurt the person they know or love. In WHERE ARE YOU, GOD? Jimmy is a child being molested in his home by his grandfather. As a result, he is displaying obvious signs of emotional distress such as: fighting with his peers; exhibiting a bad attitude in school; destroying property and thinking negatively. As in most stories of childhood abuse, it only takes ONE person to change the course of the victim's life. That person for Jimmy Andrews is a compassionate and courageous man, Principal McFall. After reading this short story, children and adults will begin to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse. If they are being abused or have been, they can easily relate to Jimmy's story and how it unfolds. It is easy to relate to the despair and hopelessness that the main character suffers when he feels abandoned by God and his mother when she doesn't believe him.I am a licensed professional clinical counselor with 43 years of experience and was nationally certified as a sex counselor for over 35 years. My work has been focused mainly on men, women and children who have been traumatized for some reason. I have worked professionally with thousands of victims through the years of practicing full time and it has taught me that their deepest wounds are in fact, their opportunities to grow spiritually. They will suffer greatly when they no longer believe that they can find meaning, joy and happiness in their lives. A belief in a higher power, in love and in intimacy and their own capability to create change is what will brighten their future. This short story is inspiring for the reader. It can help victims of sexual abuse find the strength and courage to break the silence of the abuse and regain a belief in God/humanity. Allow this book to be the beginning of a process of awareness and hope for change for you or someone you love.

Book excerpt: Sex is such an intimate topic historically wrapped in shame and when someone shares they were sexually abused, we may not know how to respond. With recent #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, we are learning just how many men, women, boys, and girls have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted person, often family members or leaders in the church. Sexual abuse is rampant in modern society and now--sometimes many years later--sexual abuse survivors are sharing their stories. Anne Marie Miller is a survivor of childhood clergy sexual abuse and has shared her journey toward healing with audiences all over the world. After speaking with thousands of survivors and their loved ones, she saw the need for a fundamental and practical guide for helping supporters of sexual abuse survivors understand the basics of abuse, trauma, healing, and hope. Drawing from her own experience as a survivor and evidence-based research, Anne addresses these questions and more in Healing Together: What is sexual abuse? How can I help survivors? Who are predators and how do they groom victims? How does trauma affect survivors? What happens when someone doesn't remember the details of their abuse? How does abuse wound the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of people who have been abused? When and how should authorities be contacted? How do you talk to your children about sexual abuse? What are the warning signs of abuse? Is healing possible? Whether you are a spouse, a family member, a friend, or a church leader looking for easy-to-navigate resources to understand and support sexual abuse survivors, you'll find answers and hope in these pages.

Book excerpt: VERONICA'S VEIL Spiritual Companionship for Survivors of Abuse A Guide for Integrating Faith with Recovery Veronica's Veil is a watershed in offering spiritual support to a growing number of adults who wish to integrate their Christian faith into the arduous psychological recovery from child abuse by clergy and other persons in authority. Veronica's Veil can help transform encounters with survivors of this trauma into turning points in healing. This is an essential guide for priests, sisters, deacons, other ordained and lay ministers, and therapists-as well as families and friends of abuse survivors. Recreating the point/counterpoint style of the authors' workshops, Veronica's Veill features over 175 essays on topics that commonly arise in therapeutic work or other recovery settings. With many tips for sensitizing one's language and approach, Veronica's Veil inspires enlightened dialog about faith with adult survivors of abuse, violence and post-traumatic stress. With additional notes by a psychologist, Veronica's Veil is an excellent aid to informed spiritual dialog that runs parallel to professional counseling, with insights for Catholics and non-Catholics into a uniquely faith-based struggle overcoming childhood abuse. Veronica's Veil draws on the gentle spirituality of St. Francis de Sales to create an invaluable tool for all people seeking to integrate Catholic and Christian faith with a survivor's recovery program.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
